PVXC Summer Club Comes to an End
PVXC Summer Club came to an end this week. It was a great success and it will be back next year! Tell your friends, neighbors and everyone else and let's keep this growing. Congratulations to everyone who earned their Participation Shirt, PR Certificates, and Summer Marathon Certificates.
High Altitude Camp - MORE COWBELL!
Things turned out great! Camp Report (July 28th-30th Pine Lake Campground)
Weds: After loading the suburbans and trailer, the team headed out just after noon with 16 boys and 13 girls. The 2 1/2 drive went well and after arriving and setting up camp, the team headed out for a 3 miler around the lake. The evening festivities were dinner cooked up by Mr. Holt - sloppy joes - and a little inspirational chat by Trevor to introduce the camp theme of "More Cowbell" and reverse tie-dying our camp shirts (except for Tyson who has to keep everything perfectly clean and in order).
Thursday: After a constant drizzle of rain throughout the night, the team headed out toward the cliffs for the morning workout. After a breakfast of pancakes, the team went to classes on Goal Setting presented by Coach Roberts, Injury Prevention presented by Clyde, and Running in College presented by Coach Holt. After hoagies for lunch, we had a little team building with a ropes exercise - the spiderweb - and a log exercise. Rachel's team of Irish Wristwatches dominated the competition! After after having all the fun we could handle here, the team went out for the afternoon run up the mountain. Much of the spare time of the afternoon was spent with card games, volleyball matches (dominated by The Anvil - Trevor, The Rocket - Corey, The Hammer - Coach Holt, and Ryan - sorry no nickname!), a few even went to the lake and tried to reel in a fish or two. The evening finished up with some tasty dutch oven and a get-to-know you activity where everyone bid on super abilities.
Friday: Again the morning kicked off with a workout. This time down toward the highway and back. Classes that were held after breakfast burritos included Mental Toughness presented by Coach Holt, Form presented by Coach Roberts, and a class for the Varsity on Becoming a Champion presented by Clyde. After some more sandwiches for lunch the team headed out for pictures at the cliffs. A workout was planned after the pictures, but a group of the kids led by Coach Holt ran down an awesome trail to pull a horse out of quickmud. The story is amazing and everyone was pumped up from showing up just in time to save Treasure. "I saved a horse today; what did you do?!" So after getting back from this adventure, the rest of the team headed out for a jog and some headed to the lake for a dip. The evening was topped off with a spaghetti dinner and an XC Testimony Meeting where some great thoughts were shared about X-Country and the wonderful experience we had.
Saturday: The final day of camp saw the team head out for one last workout. After a great breakfast of french toast, everything was packed up quickly and we headed home only to have to wash all the mud off the suburbans and trailer upon arrival.
But it was a great time for all and one that will bring the team together for a long time. Thanks to everyone that helped pull this thing off!

Nike SW PRE-SEASON PREVIEW
Nike SW Pre-Season Preview (click to read) is out and our boys got a little shout out. How to handle this is tricky. Last year we were very excited to see our first ever Southwest Regional ranking (#5, then later #4), but didn't back it up very well with our performances at State and Nike SW. And some of that might have been lack of experience at a high level; some of that was overconfidence - from things like looking at our ranking. So I hope none of us take too much stock in these articles and rankings and realize that the only place that championships are won is at practice and on the course - so let's keep up the hard work and force them to write FULL ARTICLES about us, not just little blurbs! XC 4 EVER!

2010 - NEW SEASON/NEW ATTEMPT
So as we get started with a the 2010 Cross season, I now have a new attempt at making things better for our team. We have added a SUMMER CAMP - July 28-31 (more info coming in another post); we've got LIFTING and PLYOS on Mondays and Thursdays @ 3:00 (at PVHS); I've tried to get more info out about WORKOUTS (check out link to PVXC workouts); there is the KIDS SUMMER CLUB on Tuesdays after practice; and finally I have another shot at making the blog better/more updated. So check back often on updates about summer information, race updates, athletes of the week and month, and whatever other junk we put on here!
Let's have a great summer of base building and getting to know our new team - practices held each weekday at Washington Elementary (by the Wash. Rec. Center) at 7:00 AM - be there... and STS!

Run-a-Thon
On Labor Day, we had our most successful and fun run-a-thon ever. Because of the size of the team, we split into two squads who competed for the most mileage and fundraising. We also included a hour of family/friend running that provided an opportunity for others to get involved in the event. By the end of 12 hours of food (Coaches Holt and Roberts should be professional breakfast cooks!), frisbee, soccer (Taylor and Holt own!), and laps, the teams ended with 106 and 112 miles - each # was higher than we have ever recorded! Thanks to everyone who participated. It was a lot of fun, we raised a lot of needed money for the team, and became a closer team.
August Athletes of the Month
Kaylee Boyer
Our PVHS athlete of the month for September is Kaylee. She has established herself as the #1 runner on our team in just her first XC season. Kaylee is also pushing toward a region title. This is a very big goal, but she has been working extremely hard both morning and afternoon to achieve this.
Trevor Thompson
On the boys side, Trevor in the athlete of the month. Trevor's consistent racing has moved him to the top of the Utah XC rankings despite his annoying singing and antics that drive Coach crazy and bus drivers to banning him to the back of the bus!
Congrats Kaylee and Trevor - your seasons have been awesome! Keep it up!

Provo Bulldog and Wahsatch Rendezvous
PROVO BULLDOG
What a big weekend for our team! Both Varsity teams and a few JV runners traveled to Provo to run in the Provo Bulldog Invite. The girls ran extremely well and were a mere few points from beating Snow Canyon. If you can't tell, this has been our goal all year as SC is the defending region champ and a strong team. Each meet this year, the girls have closed the gap and gotten closer to this goal. Stefani and Cassidy's strong races at Provo really moved us a step in the right direction.
The JV boys ran solid as well. The best run was probably Casey's. He really looked strong and pushed himself.
The Varsity boys were up against a very strong field with American Fork (SW#2/US#13), Mountain View (SW#3/US#23) and a very good Pleasant Grove team. We really ran as a team and each runner did great as we were able to take second to American Fork, defeating MV by nearly 20 points! This was a big step for our team on our goal of a State Title!
WAHSATCH RENDEZVOUS
After an very physically and emotionally draining race yesterday, the Varsity boys bounced back to win the Wahsatch Rendezvous! This unique race pits each #7 runner against each other, each #6, and so on. Tason started us well with a 15 second victory. Ryan continued the winning ways with a 17 second victory of his own at #6. Then Devin won #5 by 9 seconds. Finally, Tyson won #4 by 4 seconds (24th overall). Austin ran very well at #3, taking 3rd (even with a wrong turn) and 17th overall. Corey also took 3rd (at #2) and 13th overall. In the final race, we needed a solid race from Trevor to take home the win, and he delivered a great final mile, moving into 5th (3rd scoring) and securing a 1 point win over a very strong Hillcrest team.

Tyson Boyer and Megan Frodsham were athletes of the week. Tyson has become a solid fourth runner through his hard work and willingness to risk running with those above him. This has taken him to a very strong level of running himself, and greatly improved the team.
Megan's positive attitude and hard work have brought out what cross-country is really about to our team. Megan has also probably been the top recruiter for our team this year, bringing out a big group of friends building our team for years to come!

More RACING! and a #4 ranking!
BYU Invite
On the weekend of Sept. 5, Pine View Harriers headed up to Provo for the BYU Autumn Classic. This was a solid meet for all who participated. The girls ran well and recorded some solid times on the looping 5K course. Fresh/Soph girls finished 13/14 teams, JV girls were 13/15 teams, and the Varsity girls finished 16/30 teams with Kaylee as the top finisher in 43rd place and not too far off of Snow Canyon.
The boys, as in years past, ran well also. The Fresh/Soph race saw a 4th place finish (25 teams). JV boys ran very well 2/24 with Danny taking 5th. And the Varsity took 3rd out of 32 with Trevor finishing 4th! Although the final result was a little disappointing for the boys, it is still a long season with a lot of time for improvement.
MURRAY Invite
Sept. 11. The Varsity boys went to Murray to compete in the Utah Nike Cross Team Qualifing Meet. After a strong week of practice, they bounced back from last week and ran very strong up front to win the meet! The score of 100 defeated a very tough Timpanogos team (105) and Davis (112, who beat us last week). Trevor and Corey both place in the top ten. A strong run by both Austin and Tyson was also very important to the team effort. This victory moved us up to #4 in the SouthWest rankings! Cool Beans!

Southwest #5!
WOW!
Our first regional ranking ever! Last year we broke onto the bubble scene for a few weeks, but this year we are there. Now let's go out and defend it at Murray! Check out the Dye Stat rankings at http://www.dyestat.com/?pg=us-2009-XC-NXN-Southwest-Region-Team-Rankings

Kaylee and Casey
Athletes of the Week for the week of August 17th are Kaylee Boyer and Casey Kimzey. Kaylee has established herself as the top runner on the girls team and has worked herself up to a top runner in the region! Not too bad for a first year XC runner. Casey has worked extremely hard and is our top freshman boy runner. Keep up the hard work and commitment to the team!
Ryan and Madison
Congrats to Ryan Neilsen and Madison Fackler for being our first Athletes of the Week this season.
Ryan has shown unbelievable dedication and commitment this summer and it is paying off! He has worked his way onto the Varsity team and looks to be a great addition to a team looking for a state title. Madison ran great at Little Valley and also placed herself on the Varsity team while working hard to overcome shin-splints and keep herself healthy. Congrats Ryan and Madison - keep it up!

Off to the RACES
PRE-REGION @ Little Valley
The season got off to a very solid start for the Panther x-country team with the Pre-Region meet held on Aug. 15 at the Little Valley Ball Fields. Both 3A and 4A regions competed together (with combined and separate scoring). On the boys' side, Trevor Thompson led PV to the overall team title with a 1st place finish in 15:54. It was the whole team, however, combined for the strong season opening showing. The girls started the season strong by beating Dixie in a 6th place tie-breaker in the 4A region breakdown.
@ Cedar
The next Wednesday, PVXC traveled to Cedar to compete on their new course (changed because of construction). The course ran quite a bit slower than the old course, but both teams did very well. The girls closed the gap on Snow Canyon considerably in the region points - led by Kaylee Boyer's breakthrough race. The boys were paced by Corey Kimzey as they beat Canyon View by nearly 20 points.
Hurricane Invite
In the first invitation of the year, PVXC looked to repeat as boys champs; and did just that as Trevor Thompson used a strong finishing kick to victory to lead a strong showing of all 5 scoring Panthers in the top 10 to pull away from a very good Canyon View team. The girls continued to close the gap on Snow Canyon and are gaining confidence that the goal of a region title is possible with team unity and hard work.
SUU Invite
The biggest race to date of the season was the SUU Invite. Perenial state and national power Mountain View consistently wins this meet. But with our boys ranked #1 in 4A and the Bruins ranked #2, it looked to be a show down of two possible state title contenders - not to mention 3A power Canyon View looking to make waves. Core Kimzey and Trevor Thompson led the Panther harriers with 3rd and 4th place finishes, but the depth of the middle scorers of Mt. View was too much to overcome as they once again defeated the boys this year. Mt. View is a great team and this showed us it is going to take a lot of hard work and team racing to beat this team. The girls used their own team racing to run their strongest race of the season. The Panther women finished just 5 points behind SC in the overall scoring (and I'll have to break down the region, but we may have taken them their!).
Great racing everyone... Keep it up, we have a long way to go and a lot of room to improve until the end of the year!

Season Preview
Things are looking solid for PVXC this year after a long and hard-working summer. Our turnout for summer practice this year was stronger than it has ever been, with 20-40 athletes consistently at our 7:00 am practices held at Washington Elementary.
WASATCH BACK:
Both the boys and girls teams ran very strong at the Wasatch Back Relay this year. It was a great time for bonding and team unity - and we really appreciate the parents that helped drive and coach!
PREVIEW:
Both the boys and girls are looking for strong seasons this year. After only loosing one Varsity runner from last year's 4th place team at state, the boys are setting their goals high - A State Title. The girls look to bring home the region title this year and have a repeat trip to the state championships in October. Good luck to both!
