THE ROOT BEER MILE!</p><p>As hideous as this is, it is our chance to give back to the community and help a family in need. So don't think about the crappiness of drinking root beer and running, but rather helping a kid in need out. All of our proceeds go to Flynn's family, and we NEED everyone to participate (HS, MS, Youngsters, family friends).</p><div style="text-align: left;">What you need to do:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span> - </span>get prizes (everyone needs to collect prizes for the drawing/raffle, have these by Feb. 7)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span> - pay your $25 participation fee - this can be paid on your own, or gathered through getting people to bet on you. You can definitely collect more than $25. Pay the money to the PVHS finance office and say it is for the Mr. PVHS Root Beer Mile. Bring receipt to Holt</span><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span> - enter your bettors - each $1 is an individual bet on you (all bets can win prizes not just winners). <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CA1OuMvH0WoZ2TlEFB05JV9UCjW9ApOVRFLM_SnrNzA/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Go to this doc</a> and enter each name (and yours) for each $1 bet.<br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span><span> - bring 4 cans of unopened root beer to the event</span><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span><span>Event is Feb. 15th right after school on the back grass at PVHS.</span></span></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-24278626424265758782023-11-21T13:34:00.002-07:002023-11-21T13:34:31.986-07:00Nov. 20-Dec. 2 (Weeks 25 & 26) <p>We had a great time at our banquet - thanks so much to everyone who helped in any way. It is a good reminder of what we have been doing for months (and for many of you, years). Each day, each drill, each run, every time you wake up early for a run and it is hot or cold or rainy, every team activity you go be a part of, each time you reach out to a teammate and tell them they did a good job or that you missed them at practice, or all the many, many other things we do in this program... every one of those times you are planting seeds, watering them, taking care of the ground, then pruning and all that other farm stuff. And then, eventually, the time will come to eat the fruit. Hopefully at some point in this season, you've been able to see some of the rewards of all your hard work. And also, hopefully, you've grown through some of the positive experiences (and even the difficult ones) in a way that will help you continue to work on "planting the seed" in the future and we can all connect this season to the many more season to come - in running and life.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-29323864836300903642023-11-05T09:48:00.004-07:002023-11-05T09:54:53.198-07:00Nov. 6-11 (Week 23)<p>It was kinda nice to get back into the groove a little this past week. We had a fun Halloween Run (with probably our best costumes ever, and our worst ice cream experience), and doing our routine of mornings, weights, and yoga should have helped the body get back into a decent flow.</p><p>We are getting ready for our banquet. Athletes, could you please <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScVdbI-_cwxpAbYDMS27aETgOa4xDjnSaMBjo7UvMWzf3fl-g/viewform?usp=sf_link" target="_blank">fill out this form</a> by Monday with your thoughts on awards. <u>We know that not everyone will be able to make the banquet, but we want as many of you there (athletes and families) to celebrate these amazing kids as possible. So we are planning on Nov. 16th (Thursday) in the evening (probably around 5:30p).</u> </p><p>Those going to Nike, make sure you have turned in your permission slip (the official one that we got at practice last week) by Monday! If you don't have one, <a href="https://www.athletic.net/Partner/Nike/2023NXRWaiver.pdf" target="_blank">look here</a>.</p><p>Also a note on the time change... use this as a chance to get a little extra sleep. Instead of going to bed at your usual time, go to bed when you feel tired. This should help you adjust to a little earlier bedtime - maybe taking what used to be 10:00p and moving it closer to 9:00p. I know, seems early, but sleep is the best performance enhancer there is. So stay on top of your school work while staying away from things that add a distraction from sleep and get to bed a little earlier.</p><div><b>Purpose of the Week's Workouts:</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY64s8heNcroiWM3dBA77F87jrkcD3J0Ef65rZRhb-o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here for this week's workouts</a>. But as we head into the "off-season" this is a very important thing to think about. I've had numerous people asking why we are still running - "You just had State, why are you still having practice?" This quote is the answer. Distance running is so different than almost any other sport. It's not skill-based, it is endurance-based (even our quicker stuff like 800s). So if you really want to excel you've got to keep developing it. Don't worry, we'll take a little downtime in December for a couple weeks. If we look at where we want this program to go, however, and where you want your individual running to go, now is an important time to keep stacking the weeks and keep on building with consistency.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-10448767406542773522023-10-22T14:58:00.003-06:002023-10-22T15:00:19.036-06:00Oct. 23-28 (Week 21)<p>Excited for State this week! Although only 7 runners can compete in Varsity, we want everyone to know that every single one of you helped contribute to this accomplishment and to this team as a whole. Each one of you play a role in our attitudes, our work ethic, the fun times we have, and everything we accomplish. We are a team, and the 7 varsity runners are a reflection of the group as a whole.</p><p>If you didn't get the paperwork sent home about the post-season races on Wednesday, <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_ZM3-jz6VFJr0Or3H9atkQ0GyOYmYN009-cTfA7YddA/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">here it is</a>. This was our first time participating in Divisionals. Both teams placed 3rd in their respective race and solidly moved on to State. </div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>Youngsters Info:</b></div><div>There is a race at Grandpa's Pond in Hurricane on Wednesday. Anyone can have the starts align and have a great day. But the confidence from that is fleeting. Confidence comes from consistency. Show up and make your normal pretty darn good."</div></div><div>-Steve Magness</div><div>This might be geared toward our Varsity a little as we prep for State coming off a Divisionals race where things were kinda mid, but as usual its a message everyone of us can grow from. The reality of this running thing (as in life) is that is a long journey. And sometimes we get stuck in the present and think about maybe not a great performance or that some other team did something great or whatever. Despite this, we need to be thinking in the long-term. Every one of us could go back through the season, into the summer, and (for many) back years and years and see that we have been consistently good for a long time (and I don't mean the team, I mean each individual). You have been to practice nearly everyday. Working hard nearly everyday. Having good runs nearly everyday. Having fun nearly everyday. Having good races nearly every week. And when we add in a few really goods to balance out those bummers that happen sometimes, we see that each one of us has been consistently good. And consistently good is actually a really good thing! So take confidence (REAL confidence) from know that each of you have work very hard on this journey and deserve to do very well for yourself and your team. We are very proud of everyone of you!</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-75958034864676918702023-10-08T14:29:00.006-06:002023-10-08T14:29:50.051-06:00Oct. 9-14 (Week 19)<p>Congrats to the whole team on a successful Region meet this past week. It was great seeing so many of our teammates have great races and continue to improve. To those who didn't quite get what they wanted (individually or as a team), just remember that the journey is bigger than the actual result. Think back to all the great things we have done this season: the friendships, the memories, the good times - and know those are the things that will really stick with you. A big shout-out of thanks to those who helped at the marathon and those who helped with the Youth meet. Thanks for your help and for being willing to get up early and sacrifice a little of your own sleep and sticking around after practice on Wednesday to help out others.</p><p>A couple notes <u>(leaving this us from last week as just a reminder)</u>:</p><p>JV State and Foot Locker West - we've had many show interest in attending these meets. Attendance at both of these post-season meets will be organized by the athletes/parents. So don't wait. Start talking to your teammates and making plans for travel if you want to attend.</p><p>Nike Southwest - our PVXC Club will be taking a bus down to Phoenix for this meet for those who want to go. Info will be coming out this week.</p><p>Practice after Region - For JV that choose, the season officially ends with Region. It's been a long season and some might want to be done practicing; that is okay. For Varsity, and those JV that want to attend state to cheer (we will take app. 30 JV plus the Varsity), you are expected to keep coming to practice following our regular schedule (including during Fall Break, unless plans are made with coaches - <u>Varsity needs to be at practices during break</u>). As we move into the post-season, we would really like to encourage everyone (who isn't in a winter sport) to keep running. Distance running is different than almost every other sport. Because it is an aerobic-based activity, the body needs to continue building day after day, week after week, and season after season. A prolonged time off (like during winter, or even skipping all the way through spring and not doing track) will greatly hinder your development. Of course, we will need some downtime, so we do take a couple weeks off and then start a build again through December. But to really develop, the linking of seasons from summer and fall XC to winter and spring track and then back to XC is a must. So please think about your goals and how you want to develop and the commitment that this then requires and hopefully, you'll join us through the winter and track (even if you don't plan on traveling to post-season XC races).</p><div><b>Purpose of the Week's Workouts:</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY64s8heNcroiWM3dBA77F87jrkcD3J0Ef65rZRhb-o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here for this week's workouts</a>. Specifically the idea of focusing on the purpose of everything we do each day. Why do we do warm-up drills and post-run work like we do? Why do we do each workout? Why do we hold morning practices? Lift weights? And on... Because these are the habits and behaviors that produce results. Are you doing each of these things in ways that will build the results you want? Or are you just going through the motions and kinda being here? Those who see the best results, growth, and success are evaluating themselves each day in each behavior and doing the best they can each day.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-34369524508300705572023-10-01T12:32:00.002-06:002023-10-01T12:47:50.010-06:00Oct. 2-7 (Week 18)<p>It's Region Week! We had another strong meet up in Cedar. Our Youngsters, once again, did a great job. Then from our JV squads to our Varsity squads, we saw a lot of improvement in times and place throughout the race and in comparison to our first race of the season in mid-August. Here's a look at how we <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1evPx7mepV32ZzBAuwRIg0Jg7ko1OzW5HqDCEP09mVL4/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">improved over the season</a> from our first race in Cedar in August to now (and over the years for the Sophs-Seniors). <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_YCiFKFzxe5nCAd3b-UqQSQGo9gV52OJ0WLY_W5NLdQ/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow">PVXC Record (2016-present)</a></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Athletes of the Week -</b></div><div><b>Team Builder:</b> Nate, Fr. By the way, take a second and look at where both Jess and Carson rank on our Cedar Invite records (up above). When in reality all we need is to have the freedom to take risks, to see what is possible. That comes from joy, support, and security."</div></div><div>Steve Magness</div><div>This seems like a good thought as we approach the last regular season race for many and the championship season for others. Coaching for over 20 years (on top of my own 35 years of racing/running) I've seen (and experienced myself) the first thought all too often - that feeling of fear and worry about an important race and that someone will be mad if the best race isn't run. But those who I have seen reach their peak performance when it matters most are those who live by the second thought - that racing when extremely fit is an opportunity to take a risk, to experience the great joy of being brave and seeing what is possible from all your hard work, while knowing that everyone around you loves you, supports you, and is excited to see you give your very best and your growth in action. Please know that those final thoughts are how your coaches, your teammates, and your family feel right now. There is no need to be scared or timid as you approach this week (and the weeks to come). We all love you, trust you, and are excited for you to exemplify your best self out on the course!</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-14746683122844059722023-09-24T15:32:00.002-06:002023-09-24T15:49:11.096-06:00Sept. 25-30 (Week 17)<p>It's crazy that we are at the end of September. Then the girls were able to start, but not fully finish their race. Alianna ran very well and won the shortened version of the race. Bouncing back on Thursday, she ran well again and placed 4th. Grant did well in the Jr/Sr race placing 26th. In the Varsity girls' race, Kate and Emmalee led us with a 7th place finish taking 20th and 21st. Elle, Katie, Brecken, and Vanessa all finished between 40th and 50th and we had our tightest 1-5 spread on the year. The boys also had a tighter spread (40 secs. 1-5, and 49 1-6) than we've had throughout the season in taking 8th. If it matters to you, you'll find the energy."</div><div>-Steve Magness</div><div>This is a great way to think of things. When the dog has energy for the squirrel, if a kid has the energy to sprint past the cheering team, if a struggling runner finally finds the energy for a final kick, it shows that THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING IN THERE! You just have to want whatever the goal is enough to dig it out. When coaches and teammates and family are all cheering you on and believing in you, use it to believe in yourself and go get that goal you want or those runners up ahead for the team. In the words of a team motto from a few years back, "How bad do you want it?".</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-78330523649249383692023-09-20T14:50:00.005-06:002023-09-20T14:51:30.535-06:00XC Post-season meets<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScL-9GFM6vtRBzsZFbk9RO6mFZDV58syk_D2CzDPlkCVeikKg/viewform?usp=sf_link" target="_blank">Please fill out this form for XC post-season meets</a></p><p>Each year PVXC Club takes trips to some post-season meets. It was nice to not have it 110 degrees this year, but it's still always a bit hot at BHNP. The teams did great. The Cuties (Youngsters!) got us off to a great start with some very solid racing. Then the girls ran. Our top finisher was Sariah in 17th. Cassie had a great race, and Laura continues to show a lot of growth and improvement as they finished as our 2nd and 3rd runners. The boys ran really well and took third (behind Hurr and Crimson varsity). Liam led the way with an 8th place finish and Gaige was 10th. Distance running is a very interesting thing - in that it hurts, its hot, in a way kinda crappy. But what is so great is to be part of this great journey. As a coach, it is watching each of you grow and overcome trials and adversity. To see you become better runners, teammates, and people. It's about all that. I don't know a lot of things we do in life that encompass all of those important aspects as well as distance running does. What a great thing. I just love it!</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-49160445514315457652023-09-03T13:54:00.001-06:002023-09-03T16:00:36.280-06:00Sept. 4-9 (Week 14)<p>We've got a busy week and a half ahead of us. Be there first."</div><div>-Steve Magness</div><div>One of the things we've tried to build this team on is guts - being brave, putting yourself into a position to do great things. So often it seems that people never even reach the surface of the great things they can do because of barriers they place on themselves. Get out and give yourself a chance to be amazing. Give it a try. An example: we were super proud of Jake at SUU. He went out strong and led through the first part of the race. To do that, he had to set aside fears of dying out or not finishing strong and he just went for it. And although he didn't finish first, he learned a ton about himself and what he can do when he goes for it. These are things that are going to pay off for him big time as he works toward soon being a varsity runner, and then a scorer, and then a guy who is competing for titles and beyond. So be like Jake! Be brave and get out of your own way!</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-10089179999868838132023-08-27T15:54:00.007-06:002023-08-27T19:41:05.962-06:00Aug. 28-Sept. 2 (Week 13)<p>A great week in the books. We made some comments about practice last week, and overall we did much better. Keep striving to find ways to be at practice rather than excuses to not be (if you want a great quote about excuses talk to Porter, her had an epiphany the other day!).</p><p>A thought for parents and athletes: our XC program is in the situation that many activities are finding a struggle with right now - a lack of participation. Although we have a solid crew of Freshman, our Youngsters crew has really fallen off on numbers this year, and it has us concerned for the future. The greatest recruiting tool is you (parents and athletes) and your communication with neighbors and friends. We would love if all of you would spread the word around neighborhood and friends. If XC has beneficial to you and you've seen your child (or self) growing, learning, and just generally becoming a better person because of this sport and team, will you go out of your way to share this with everyone you know. We are desperately looking for new athletes (grades 6-12) and hope to keep our program and its tradition of excellence going for long into the future.</p><div><b>Purpose of the Week's Workouts:</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY64s8heNcroiWM3dBA77F87jrkcD3J0Ef65rZRhb-o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here for this week's workouts</a>. Panthers did very well at the SUU Invite. The Varsities went first with the boys securing the team title and continuing their assault on the all-time PV record book. We were paced by Talmage who stuck right up front the whole race and won in an exciting kick (8th all-time PV, 5th all-time PV Sr, 3rd PV Champ). Bridger placed 4th (7th all-time PV Jr), Bender 7th (2nd all-time PV Soph), Kyler 8th (9th all-time PV Sr) and Porter 16th to get a 36-40 win over Cedar. All 3 team averages were in our top 10 SUU records (a race we have records of since 2007): 2nd in Top 5, 3rd in Top 7, and 5th in Top 10! The girls placed three in the top 10 with Emmalee taking 6th (6th all-time PV So.), Brecken 7th, and Elle 9th (all three broke into the PV top 50) to help guide the girls to a 2nd place finish behind Cedar (35-40). The JV boys ran very well and placed all five scores in the top 10 led by Trevor in 3rd, Carter 4th, Liam 7th, Evan 8th, and ultimately Grant's 10th finish by just .07 won the meet for the boys at 32-33 over Cedar. In the JV girls race, Jordyn placed 10th for the Panthers. Some other notable performances were Laura's strong race as our 2nd JV finisher and Elliot, Nate, and Brennan all finishing close together in the JV races to lead our Freshman boys. <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KlwzL4U0Snp2BBU5dEX8PBPjV3DuM8RI3GmVFQ8y5DE/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">PVXC Records</a>. <a href="https://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2023/08/27/spo-jmr-high-school-cross-country-pine-view-boys-cedar-girls-win-at-suu-invitational/" target="_blank">St. George News Article</a></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Athletes of the Week -</b> (from last week)</div><div><b>Team Builder:</b> Ferrell, So. Let's keep it rolling with a positive week coming up.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Just a quick comment about practice... Everyone is, of course, expected to be at practice (as outlined below). With the rare exceptions, athletes need to be at each practice. Athletes have chosen a level they want to work at, and are then expected to be there. It is very difficult to build a team when our teammates are missing. Obviously you miss the training when you are gone, but you also miss the building of the team and team unity, trust, and friendship that is created from being together. One of our biggest misses this past week was Friday morning. Friday morning is not an optional practice. We practice together as a team on Friday morning, because of the differing schedules of the schools and to allow athletes time to complete school work and spend more time with families/friends on Friday afternoon. Those who are missing required practices won't be invited to go to meets with the team.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Stuff you HAVE TO DO!:</b></div><div><a href="https://www.registermyathlete.com/login/" target="_blank"><b>Register My Athlete</b></a> - most are done; check and finish if you haven't.</div><div><b>Physical</b> - Get yours done if you haven't yet. It was great to get the first full distance race in. And despite the rainy weather, we did excellent. A few of our Youngsters headed up and represented PV very well. In the rainy girls race, we took 2nd on a tie-breaker (just a few points back of DH). Emmalee (3rd), Brecken (4th), and Elle (9th) led the way with top 10 finishes. Vanessa continues to grow in her racing and recorded our 8th fastest Freshman time on this course in the past 8 years (course change in 2016). It was also great to see some of our other new members of the team (like Cassie, Sariah, Ren, Samantha, and Ayla) get their first race in and overcome some of the nerves of racing. The boys also took 2nd behind DH and had a solid pack of Talmage (4th), Bridger (6th), Kyler (7th), Porter (11th), and Bender (15th) leading the way. Our Sophomore crew continues to improve, and we saw great races from Trevor, Liam, and Jake. And the Freshman group has shown a lot of potential with Brennan, Elliot, Nate, Nathan, and Ali'i up front. <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oQUagP79vMkkMTP0yaFiX4D2NvQSa04A1C0vax8ZaZg/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">PVXC Records</a></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Athletes of the Week -</b> (will update)</div><div><b>Team Builder:</b> </div><div><b>Tough at Practice:</b> </div><div><b>Performance of the Week:</b> </div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>Youngsters Info:</b></div><div>Practice held at PVHS at 3:00p Mondays and Thursdays for 6th-8th graders.</div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>PVXC Thought of the Week:</b> </div><div>"Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything."</div><div>-George Bernard Shaw</div><div>As we focus a lot of the importance and power of the mind and our thoughts, and the role they play in our performance as well as our desire to see growth throughout the season, this quote really carries a lot of power. EVERYTHING starts with the mind. If you can't change the mind, how can you change anything? Many want to get better, but then do the same thing (miss practice, don't focus on pre or post-run work, get to bed late, don't stay up in school) that has caused them to not grow in the first place. Until you have really had a paradigm shift in your thinking, the growth we say we desire won't be there.</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-43147837046509833692023-08-13T14:14:00.003-06:002023-08-13T14:14:34.084-06:00Aug. 14-19 (Week 11)<div style="text-align: left;">It's race season! Hopefully you are excited to show your hard work over the summer. There is probably some nervousness in there too, and that's okay. Nerves show that you care and want to do well. The key is to just not let those nerves shut you down. How do you do that? By going back to the hard work you've put it (think of good workouts, your growth, etc), by remembering that this is just one part of the journey, and by remembering that all those who care about you (family, team, coaches) believe in you and are there to support you not judge you.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Of course, we also start up school this week. So there are some extra stressors in our lives. This is a good time to make sure you are doing all the things to keep a healthy body and mind by working on your sleep schedule (make it a few minutes better each night/week), working on healthy eating, and developing a time schedule that works for you with school work, practice, family/friend time, and your other activities.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Parent Info:</b> As we head into our first full XC race this week, a little info about our expectations and how things go - </div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>each athlete needs to ride the bus with the team - this gives us plenty of time to warm up and to be there to support our teammates, as well as build the team bonds with the fun/crappiness of trips together!</li><li>after a race, please let the athletes do their cool downs - often we want to give lots of hugs and talk about the good and bad; instead (as we've told the athletes to do) just give a quick wave and an "I love you" or whatever and let them get into their post run stuff</li><li>speaking of talking after a race, what do you say as a parent? - be positive and tell your kids you are proud of their hard work and growth; let the athlete talk (<u>or not</u>) about how well/not as well they did (let them lead the conversation); don't try to coach the athlete (that coaching is so often well meaning, but that's what we get paid the big bucks for! You just be the beaming parent!)</li><li>athletes are expected to stay the entire meet and watch all the races (even if theirs gets done earlier) - again this is about the team; we are a team, we need to be there for each other and support each other. And if you need to leave, that's why we have a bus. In fact, often that time on the bus is the absolute best bonding because the stress of the race is gone and the kids can decompress. </li><li>If you are going to take your child (again, after all the races, please), you MUST check out with the coach who has the clipboard and sign your child out. Athletes CAN ONLY GO HOME WITH THIER GUARDIAN - not with a family friend, neighbor, sibling, even grandparent (those situations must be approved by the administration in writing before the meet - it is for your child's safety)</li></ul></div><div><b>Stuff you HAVE TO DO!:</b></div><div><a href="https://www.registermyathlete.com/login/" target="_blank"><b>Register My Athlete</b></a> - most are done; check and finish if you haven't.</div><div><b>Physical</b> - Get yours done if you haven't yet. But where you are."</div><div>-Brad Stulberg </div><div>Thought this was an appropriate thought as we start up some racing. Some of us have had amazing summers of training; others, not so much. And now we start racing and doing workouts at race pace, we might be wanting to do more than we are ready for, or maybe we are a little embarrassed that we aren't quite in the shape we want to be, so we want to do more/faster. But, like all things in life - it is what it is. There is no changing what has happened, but there is a clear path to the future: do what your supposed to, when your supposed to, how your supposed to, and work to eliminate your struggles and things will get better. We still have a long season. Work from where you're at with consistency and good things will happen!</div><div><span> </span></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-33098725462513670302023-08-06T15:09:00.004-06:002023-08-08T14:51:38.468-06:00Aug. 7-12 (Week 10) <div style="text-align: left;">This has been a great summer. We've said it before, but it's worth saying again... This team is made up of extraordinary people. Not many people are willing put in the work and sacrifice that you all are. As we finish up the summer here soon, take a few minutes and think back to all the lessons you've learned and all the growth that you've experienced this summer. Hopefully there are a lot of positive memories in there and things that you can keep building on in the future.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Also, it is not too late to be joining the team. We are hoping that this week and next week, we can get a few new faces out (or even familiar ones from the summer that we've missed for awhile). Please reach out to some friends who would benefit from being part of such an awesome group and bring them along with you. </div><div style="text-align: center;">*There is probably a few of you who haven't eaten or drank much in the last little bit, please make sure you spend Sunday evening fueling and rehydrating*</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Stuff you HAVE TO DO!:</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://www.registermyathlete.com/login/" target="_blank"><b>Register My Athlete</b></a> - many of you haven't done this yet (or haven't finished with the new pages added by the district last week). We are moving into another phase of our training for a couple weeks. This is kind of a transition time into our important races in September and October. For everyone that has been training consistently in the summer, there will be a little drop in minutes, but we will still have some quality workouts and intensity. We want to be careful with the start of school and the stresses that come with that, so we will adjust our workouts accordingly. But it is also very important that each of you do your part and get sleep, hydrate, and be taking care of your body and mind. The weather also plays a factor in this - sometimes we have to change things because of heat or possible lightning. But just know that afternoons are usually our main practice on Monday-Thursday. Fridays our main practice is in the am because school gets out at different times for 9th grade and the HS. Our newer runners (Freshmen, Maroons) never have a required am (except Friday) but can choose to come a few days if they want. Silver level has a few morning required. And those who choose to do the Black workouts have practices most mornings and afternoons. We do have a few athletes joining us doing other sports. The key to this is talking to coaches and planning when you can be to practices each week so we can plan our workouts for you and also give you ample time to be doing well in your other endeavors. </span><br /></span></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Upcoming Events:</b></div><div><ul><li><span style="background-color: #04ff00;">RACE:</span> Desert Relays - Monday, 8/7, Bloomington Hills North Park, relay race against DH (this is our first "real" race of the season; so, as usual, everyone is expected to be there), <span style="background-color: #fcff01;">girls 6:00p, boys 6:30ish</span><span style="background-color: white;">, Athletes be at the park at 5:00p for warm up and getting our relays teams lined up. As coaches, we are very proud of how hard so many of you have worked over the summer. We know it is not easy: it isn't easy to wake up in the summer, it isn't easy to run, it isn't easy to be in the heat, it isn't easy to push yourself to do more. But we see your growth as runners and people because you are doing difficult things, and we hope you see it too.</p><div><b>Purpose of the Week's Workouts:</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY64s8heNcroiWM3dBA77F87jrkcD3J0Ef65rZRhb-o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here for this week's workouts</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Minutes:</b> Update your minutes for <a href="https://forms.gle/Utey3uLfhUQVFEWH6" target="_blank">Week 8 Minutes</a> (fill out the form for the week we just completed). </div><div><br /></div><div><b>This Week's Schedule:</b></div><div><div><u>Monday</u>: Team Time Trial at Bloomington Hills North Park 7:00a - info below - (Everyone) / Captains meeting at 6:40a</div><div><u>Tuesday</u>: Regular practice at 7:00a at Washington Elem. This was the 2nd year that we did a food drive for entry and we doubled the amount of food we took to the Utah Food Bank! In the race, we had some great early season results. Ultimately the goal is to get everyone in the mode of racing - running harder than workouts and reminding the body and mind how you have to push in races. This was our 5th year running the race, so we've had some pretty good runners participate. Nonetheless, we had a lot of performances in the overall, grade level, and team time record books. Bridger and Emmalee set the overall records for the race with times of 9:28 and 11:39 (both breaking the old records by about 12 seconds and of course setting their grade record). Brennan, Elliot, and Nate all broke into the Top 10 Freshmen as well as Vanessa, Julia, and Katie K. Bender, Carter, Liam, Kyle, and Trevor all hit Top 10 Sophs. And Porter, Kyler, Gaige, and Carson as well as Elle, Brianna, and Katie F. all earned Top 10 Seniors. As a scoring 5, the girls recorded their 3rd fastest year. While the boys had their 2nd fastest years for scoring 5 and scoring 10 and their fastest year for scoring 7. Overall the awesome results from everyone showed what a great summer everyone has had; it was a great rust-buster and a great place from which we can build. <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SV9Ban1BpwcHKVK74gEUp8GfqlsZgzNHUACj4oY0_Ag/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">2023 Results</a> and <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TrN5hEXGiuRk_WYF6PW6E3niY4yeJI7jCAfBZapgN_Q/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Records</a></div><div><b>PVXC Time Trial -</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JvMsArmq1s_jBHLKfNeyZtP1O93Fea_eblpEIzJwd98/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">2023 results</a> and <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AUFmGDGABRnFdQajkh2Ynqr0e1EhpPiWHVgmHRJCgNs/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">records</a></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Athletes of the Week -</b> (after the boys messing up their announcing, who knows if these are in the right spots!)</div><div><b>Team Builder:</b> Bridger, Jr - he's an awesome dude who is always helping everyone and working so hard.</div><div><b>Team Builder:</b> Laura, Fr - has been bringing a great attitude with a sense of humor that brings the team together.</div><div><b>Tough at Practice:</b> Bender, So - has been working extremely hard and pushing himself and everyone around him.</div><div><b>Tough at Practice:</b> Brecken, Jr - has been running really well as result of her consistent hard work and effort.</div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>PVXC Thought of the Week:</b> "Trust is another word for faith - trusting that we can open to the next unfolding, to the unknown moment, and be vulnerable even to experiencing unpleasant feelings. This quote talks about the importance of allowing oneself to be vulnerable to be open to and gain trust. A team setting is the perfect example of a place where one needs to trust others and be vulnerable. Without vulnerability, it is difficult (maybe even impossible) to truly reach the full potential of an individual and a team. We'll be discussing this on Tuesday, so if you need Chapter 6, go back to last week's post and get access to the reading.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-6288157001759442212023-07-23T15:16:00.000-06:002023-07-23T15:16:01.272-06:00July 24-28 (Week 8)<p>Thanks for everyone's help at camp. You do - or you do not." </div></div><div>-George Mumford</div><div>The author is talking about a pretty iconic scene from <i>Star Wars</i> that most people know (maybe even Bridger!). The great thing about this idea of "do or do not, there is no try" is a tough concept for many of us - mostly because we worry about failure. What if I can't do it? What if I fail? What if I'm not good enough? I truly believe, however, that one of the biggest aspects of growth a person can have in life is when they realize that the only "failure" is in not going for it. For when a person commits and gives it their very best they are DOING, even if it doesn't go perfectly, they are DOING. If each of us could quit worrying about the results and just get DOING all of our lives would be so much better... so would our running! </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-75499559249758245532023-07-08T17:38:00.002-06:002023-07-10T16:19:36.285-06:00July 10-15 (Week 6)<p>Okay Panther XC'ers, we are getting down to summer crunch time. If you haven't checked out the <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XHVtmiUT1kdQD7nVw50B0Xcj3qBS1_sOxJ9lAQ8W6RM/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">2023 schedule</a> and made sure that you have work off and will be in town and all that, please do. </p><div><b>Purpose of the Week's Workouts:</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY64s8heNcroiWM3dBA77F87jrkcD3J0Ef65rZRhb-o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here for this week's workouts</a>. Just another shout-out to those (especially our younger runners) who have been consistently building minutes this summer. Whether you started at 10mins and are now getting up to 25mins, or you are getting your expected Black minutes in everyday, consistency is the thing that is going to help you grow and be healthy in doing so. This week we add an optional 3rd afternoon run (2 are expected) for Silver and Black. We encourage everyone to be getting in afternoon exposure to the heat and sun. Maroon levels have 2 optional runs afternoon runs, but even getting out and walking for 15mins will be helpful in acclimating the body to the heat.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Minutes:</b> Update your minutes for <a href="https://forms.gle/Utey3uLfhUQVFEWH6" target="_blank">Week 5 Minutes</a> (fill out the form for the week we just completed). We want to get this done early, so you can get your gear early in the season. Nothing from the Spirit Pack is required, but each athlete will need to buy their uniform. Most uniform stuff (boys and girls top and girls shorts) will be ordered/paid for through PVHS. Boys will also need to order their own shorts (because we can't get them ordered in a team bulk). (Not sure if you noticed or not.) With the heat and the mid-point of summer and moratorium finishing up, sometimes we find ourselves slacking a little and missing practice here or there. Let's not slip. Be to practice; get your runs in. Also, be taking care of yourself: get sleep (at least 8 hours a night) and be drinking a lot (80-100 oz of water and another 20ish of an electrolyte drink is a pretty good goal).</p><div><b>Purpose of the Week's Workouts:</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY64s8heNcroiWM3dBA77F87jrkcD3J0Ef65rZRhb-o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here for this week's workouts</a>. We have a little build of minutes this week and our first set of aerobic repeats. For levels Black and Silver, there are 2 short doubles on the schedule (Tuesday and Thursday). If these days don't work for a short 15 minute afternoon, move them where you can in the week, but try to get them in. It is important that we start introducing these afternoon runs for our buildup, but it is also important to keep them short and to be safe in the heat. So run where you can stop off and get water if necessary. And if you feel any signs of extra heat, stop and get in the shade. Maroon athletes who feel ready have the option to bring in one or two of these doubles if desired. There's a lot of articles about how to handle running in the heat. <a href="https://www.verywellfit.com/tips-for-running-in-the-heat-according-to-experts-5536871" target="_blank">Here's one</a> with some good thoughts.</div><div>With moratorium continuing on Monday and Tuesday, we have moved Kids' Club to Wednesday, so we see a little adjustment in our schedule there. Also be watching for any messages from your captains discussing any runs for Monday and Tuesday.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Minutes:</b> Check back at what you did this past week and update your minutes for <a href="https://forms.gle/Utey3uLfhUQVFEWH6" target="_blank">Week 4 Minutes</a> (fill out the form for the week we just completed). We talk and talk about all these things that you can do to get better, but the first thing you need to figure out is, "Do I really want to get better?" 'Cause if you want to stay the same, then there you go. But if the answer is yes, you really want to improve, then you have to find yourself getting our of the comfort zone. And this chapter will help you understand how to do that in a positive way.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371028113216729249.post-45110552963203122132023-06-25T08:00:00.000-06:002023-06-25T08:00:18.871-06:00June 26-July 1 (Week 4)<p>Somehow we are already halfway through the summer - which means races are coming sooner than we think. Remember that consistency is really the key to everything. As we hit the second half of this week and into the first part of next week, we are into our moratorium. This is where you get to really prove to yourself how bad you want it. Continue to get your runs in, look for messages from your captains, team leaders, and support squads and know that the work you put in now will have a benefit. If you need proof, look back to where you were a few weeks ago and see how far you've gone since already.</p><div><b>Purpose of the Week's Workouts:</b> <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AY64s8heNcroiWM3dBA77F87jrkcD3J0Ef65rZRhb-o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here for this week's workouts</a>. We're looking to be cautious with our growth, to help avoid injuries. But it is important that you do your part by getting each run in each day (or at least something as best you can). When you miss days or even weeks and try to jump back in where you "should" be, you're not really hitting healthy progression and open yourself up to fatigue and injury. This week, our growth in minutes will really come from the introduction of doubles - a second run during the day. </div><div>You may also notice something a little different on our <u>Strides</u>; so a little info on them: <u>Long Run (Mon)</u> still doing 5x25secs; <u>Half and Half (Tues)</u> still doing 6xStrides barefoot, 4 downhill, 2 uphill; <u>Longer easy days (Weds and Sat)</u> will be doing "<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wCDa9U3ZwfVMYJFRNE4mtRv_uyioc3Cg/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Progression of Strides</a>" which is basically just either increasing the number of our strides or the speed, notice that it is a progression which means you need to be consistent with the previous stride work (in this case "A" before we go to "B"), so those who have been at practice consistently throughout the summer are ready to move to "B" this week while those who have missed some should stay at "A"; <u>other days (Workout-Thurs and Shorter Easy-Fri)</u> will remain the same on strides (in this case 4x20 secs).</div><div>Finally, now would be a great time to start building in a bit of yoga (if you haven't yet). We don't expect you to be a yoga master, but yoga will help strengthen and loosen some of the key areas involved in running. Doing this once or twice a week will go a long way to keeping you healthy. Here is a great yoga video we have used for years:<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_IlzyuRQwsc" width="320" youtube-src-id="_IlzyuRQwsc"></iframe></div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Minutes:</b> Check back at what you did this past week and update your minutes for <a href="https://forms.gle/Utey3uLfhUQVFEWH6" target="_blank">Week 3 Minutes</a> (fill out the form for the week we just completed). </div><div><br /></div><div><b>This Week's Schedule:</b></div><div><u>Monday</u>: Regular practice at 7:00a at <span style="background-color: #fcff01;">Highland Park</span> (Everyone) / Captains meeting at 6:40a</div><div><u>Tuesday</u>: Regular practice at 7:00a at Washington Elem. Think about how many things we do everyday "without being totally conscious". Imagine that for those things that are truly important to you, you actually put a full conscious effort into them. Not only would you become so much better at those things that are important, but you would actually save time and energy as well. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
