Aug. 29-Sept. 3 (Week 13)

As we jump into a new week, right now would be a great time for everyone to take a minute and reflect on how far you have come. Some of you just started XC this summer (or even in the last few weeks), but you have probably seen some of the most growth on the team. Others of you have been on this journey for many years and might not even remember what it was like to just be starting out. But as we start moving into some of our bigger races here getting into September, its cool to think about all the progress each of you have made. And, its an important thing for each of you to recognize that you have grown a lot - and that there's more to come!

  • The 2022 schedule has had a couple changes! *Hurricane moving again* who knows what they are doing... So we'll see what we decide to do there.
Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts. This week is going to see a couple workouts that specifically work on areas of our racing. We will continue to hit CV work which is shown to stimulate speed endurance (basically help you run fast for a long time) without accumulating too much fatigue). We will also be doing some goal pace work during the week.

Race Report:
SUU Invite -  This was a very solid meet. The thing we are most proud of, as coaches, is that we set goals for teams and individuals to work on, and so many of you went and worked on those exact things. In doing so, we saw a lot of improvement on our team and individual racing. The Varsity boys started the morning with a very strong team race. We were working on having everyone start off a bit closer to Bridger and everyone put themselves right into position. This really helped our team out as we saw Talmage, Porter, and Kyler move into the top 20, with Bridger just off the group. Trey ran another very smart race, pulling away in the last half mile for a nice win (I'll say this to brag up Trey even a little more - I hope everyone is watching how Trey races, he is very smart and patient and is always pushing. No matter where you are at in your running ability, he is someone to model you practices and races after; and you will get better). In the team results, The Varsity boys beat DH on the tiebreaker (never underestimate how important those 6th and even 7th runners are - good job Keaton) to take 3rd. The Varsity girls had their best team race in a few years. Again we had the goal of closing up the pack and also putting pressure on those who dared break away. Because of our tight team pack at the front, no one was able to make a break away move without our girls covering it, and eventually it made for our girls pushing for the win. In the end, Brook led 5th Panthers in the top 10 with a 2nd place finish just 3 seconds off the win. She was followed by Emmalee in 3rd, Adri in 7th, Katie in 9th, and Kate in 10th. Ma'a and Elle ran well and beat not only most every team's top 5, but in most cases were displacing outside of their top 2 or 3 (or even 1). The strong pack led to a big PV win with a score of 31 to Cedar's 52. The JV boys placed 3rd overall led by strong races from Grant (15th) and Carson (22nd) who were up in the front group for much of the race. Gaige, Evan, Dane, Parker, and Kevin formed a strong group just behind and made for just a 16 second spread through the team. Ending the day, the JV girls also ran very strong. Brianna's hard work and "no quit" attitude really showed as she ran a very strong to win the race. Brecken followed her up with a 2nd place finish. Laney then placed 12th with Alianna 14th to pace the girls to a 3rd place finish. There were many other strong races and big improvements throughout the races. A few of note were Ian, and again really all the freshman/new boys crew. This is a group that has really brought the hopes of a bright future for PVXC... keep up the hard work and learn from those on the team that inspire you. St. George News Article. UtMilesplit interview w/ Trey. PV Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Are you a fountain or a drain?
FOUNTAINS: Bring life and energy to their team. They are positive, encouraging and make everyone around them better.
DRAINS: Suck the energy out of the room. They are negative, complain and have a problem for every solution.
Be a fountain today!"
-Justin Su'a
This is great and simple way to visualize your impact on the team. Are there ways that you might be acting as a drain on the team? How can you turn those struggles around and eliminate that drain? And then, what can be done to bring life to the team and be a fountain?

Aug. 22-27 (Week 12)

It was great to get our first meet in after a very good summer of running and team building. We appreciate everyone's patience with switching around the schedule to avoid lightning and all that. Hopefully we're able to stick a little close to our planned schedule this week.

If you haven't done this stuff, please take a look at (and do) the following things:
  • The 2022 schedule has had a couple changes! Hurricane was moved to 9/21 (we will still have some of our JV attend that race - no location announced yet). We have added a race with Cedar on 9/28 which everyone will be racing.
  • ***Finish registermyathlete, Pay Fee, Get Physical (if you haven't yet completed) - Go to registermyathlete.com
  • If you are not getting our team information texts, text the code "@xcchamps" to 81010
Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts. We see a decent increase in minutes, so it will continue to be important to take care of the body and mind. The number one thing you can do to help yourself is GET MORE SLEEP. Make it a goal to continue getting 15 more minutes of sleep every few nights until you are giving yourself a solid 8 hours +. We'll have our first Monday morning long run this week and a good workout Wednesday, so work on getting to bed sooner. Then we'll back off a bit to help us recover for a strong race on Saturday up at SUU.

Race Report:
Cedar All-Comers -  PVXC had a great first race of the season up at a rainy Cedar course. The girls started us off with a first place finish led by Brook (4th), Emmalee (5th), Adri (6th), Kate (11th), Katie (12th), and Elle (15th). A few other strong races came from Sydney, Olivia, and Ma'a. The boys saw a ton of improvement from last year. Trey broke away in the last half of the race and won by over 20 seconds. He was followed by Bridger (18th), Talmage (20th), Porter (23rd), and Kyler (25th). Other guys who had a strong race were Gianno, AJ, Liam and the rest of the Freshman crew. News report. Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Your body language doesn't just affect your mindset and performance, but also your teammates' mindset and performance. This is why you need to try your best to maintain positive body language, not just to help your own mindset, but also to improve your entire team's performance."

This is something that all of us could use a reminder of. The way we act and the words we say not only influence us, but also everyone we're around. Remember Positive Vibes Only!

Aug. 15-20 (Week 11)

Good job the first couple days of school - we kept our numbers strong, added a few new teammates, survived our first lightning warning/school run, and those at Renegade Camp had a great time; and now here we are ready to kick off our official race season this week!

If you haven't done this stuff, please take a look at (and do) the following things:
  • take a look at the 2022 schedule and start making some plans so you don't miss races.
  • ***This has to be done or you can't come to practice*** registermyathlete - Go to registermyathlete.com  - physical needs to be complete and on file at PVHS asap (if not complete, must be scheduled or you can't practice).
    Fees must be paid.
  • If you are not getting our team information texts, text the code "@xcchamps" to 81010
  • If you don't have a uniform yet, we will get those Monday afternoon
Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts. We will continue to be cautious on our afternoon minutes, as we build up to the heat, but we will also be pushing ourselves a bit. So we'll leave this info up from last week: It is important that you are taking good care of your body and mind right now: get enough sleep (should be shooting for 8-9 hours a night; if you're not there yet, try and increase your sleep by 10-15mins a night until you can reap the mental and physical benefits of a full night's sleep), hydrate, roll, ice, and also don't get too down on yourself if you feel fatigued - these transitions (like going to back to school) are tough on us - just be patient and take care of yourself and encourage teammates to do the same.

ALWAYS WEAR WHITE OR BRIGHT TO AM PRACTICES

Race Report:
Desert Relays - The team ran very well at the 9th annual Desert Relays. The girls swept the individual awards with Brook winning the 1st Leg, Adri the 2nd, and Katie the 3rd. In fact the girls went 1st and 2nd in each leg. The team results were very close with DH taking the win with a little better scoring in the later teams by a score of 28-29. The boys showed great improvement and ran much closer to DH than last year. Trey won Leg 1. Bridger was just 2 seconds off a Leg 2 win, and Diego also placed 2nd (in Leg 3). Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good."
-John Steinbeck
Pretty applicable thought to almost anything by the greatest American writer (my humble opinion). Very often, our drive to be perfect holds us back. Maybe we are afraid that we won't do our best, or maybe we're worried about others doing better than us. Or whatever... Often we're so fixated on having to be perfect that we aren't able to get in there and do something. Instead, just go do your best, whatever that is for that moment; go do good. Not only will you be surprised to find that trying to do your best instead of being perfect will help you relax and find more confidence and enjoyment, it will often lead to you actually doing a lot better than you thought you could because you're getting out of your own way. As we approach our first full XC race on Wednesday, be mindful of your thinking and set goals to just get out there and do good rather than having to be perfect.

Aug. 8-13 (Week 10)

Another great week down. It was great to see our numbers back up and to feel the excitement as the season is getting into full swing. We had a very strong time trial at the Bloomington Hills North Park on Monday morning and that energy continued throughout the week. As we head into this transition from summer to the school year and to our first races, please check out all the info below:

If you haven't done this stuff, please take a look at (and do) the following things:
  • Here is our Spirit Pack order... Nothing on this is required. Our uniforms are separate (those posted are practice gear); this is gear for athletes, families, friends, supporters to show PVXC pride! The order is through a separate company than PVXC or PVHS, so questions and concerns should go through them. Order is due by Saturday, August 13th.
  • take a look at the 2022 schedule and start making some plans so you don't miss races.
  • GET THIS DONE!!!! registermyathlete - This has to be finished by the beginning of school. Go to registermyathlete.com (the registration part needs to be done this week) if you haven't - physical needs to be complete and on file at PVHS asap.
Fees will need to be paid by the beginning of school.
  • If you are not getting our team information texts, text the code "@xcchamps" to 81010
Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts. We continue our SWEP phase with some important workouts this week, but we will also try to set things up so that the end of the week and early next week allows for recovery to the transition into school and also more afternoon practices. It is important that you are taking good care of your body and mind right now: get enough sleep (should be shooting for 8-9 hours a night; if you're not there yet, try and increase your sleep by 10-15mins a night until you can reap the mental and physical benefits of a full night's sleep), hydrate, roll, ice, and also don't get too down on yourself if you feel fatigued - these transitions (like going to back to school) are tough on us - just be patient and take care of yourself and encourage teammates to do the same.

This Week's Schedule:
Monday: regular practice at 7:00a Pine View HS on the front grass by the marquee (everyone) / evening Race: Desert Relays at Bloomington Hills North Park (off of Vermillion Drive in Bloomington Hills) 7:30p (everyone) - race info below...

Race Report:
PVXC Team Time Trial - We built on our positive 24th of July race with another strong time trial on Monday at BHNP. The boys continue to show great growth and had a team time just off of some of our top teams in PVXC history and we continue to close our spread, keeping it at less than 50secs. this race. Trey broke the meet record and Bridger and Porter had top 25 efforts. Emmalee led the girls with a top 25 finish and the team also had a time spread of less than 50secs. Some of the best runs came from a little further back with strong runs from Kevin, Coleman, AJ, and Ben on the boys side, and Brianna and Alianna on the girls side. Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"An XC team will never be great unless it has that one kid that elevates the whole program by being uncompromising. The all-in, 'no matter what, I'm going to be good and... we're going to be good' kid changes the whole face of the program."
-Adam Kedge, coach of Albuquerque Academy
AA is a perennial national contender from New Mexico. We get to race them every year at NXR. If he thinks that one athlete can be that game changer for a program, what would it be like if there were a whole team of athletes who are all-in? Some good questions to ask yourself are, "How am I contributing to elevating this team?", "Are there things I can do better?", "How do I help others, and how do they help me, make this program one I am proud to be a part of?"
