Week of Aug. 26-31 (Week 13)

Hopefully we are all in the full swing of things with school and practice and all everything else. We're going to use this space to talk a little about being invited to Murray (race is next week, 9/6). To be invited to Murray each athlete must:1) attend every required practice 2) be updating his/her Final Surge 3) have grades up to team standards - a grade check will happen on Friday, each athlete must turn in a print out of his/her grades by Friday practice (if your grades are struggling you have the week to get them fixed; if your teacher isn't putting your work in, turn it in on time!). Those whose grades may be below our team expectations will be put on probation from the team (no practice, no meets, no team activities) until the grades are up. We have a team goal of a 3.5 GPA - although each individual situation will be taken into account, athletes should be maintaining a 3.0 to help us reach our goal. 4) pay $25 hotel fee before we go.

*PVXC Gear Store is open - orders must be placed by tonight*
remember that none of this gear is required
We invite family, friends, and whoever else to order gear

Purpose of the week's workouts - This is our final week of SWEP. In our next phase, we start to transition to a little quicker (race pace) workouts and more focus on hills. So we really want a solid week of workouts here.

IF YOU HAVE PINE VIEW GEAR, WEAR IT TO PRACTICE!
and remember bright or white in the mornings is required

Here's our schedule for the week - all practices at PVHS unless noted, am practices we will meet by the glass room/weight room, afternoon practices we will meet under the marquee at the front of the school). Afternoon practices will generally run from 3:00p - 5:00p.

Week 12 Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder - Emily Bush (So); Since joining our team at the beginning of the school year, Emily has brought a great attitude to the program.
Tough at Practice - Boston Horspool (Jr); Boston has really dug in the past few months and has really been pushing himself and his teammates to do great things.
Best Performance - Sadie Taylor (Jr); Sadie really dug in at the SUU Invite this past weekend and ended up as our 5th scorer for the JV squad.

Race Report -
SUU Invite - We had a very successful race at the SUU Invite on Saturday. Although we sat some of our Varsity runners, the teams still placed well and many individuals ran strong. All of the guys in the Var Boys race were racing varsity for the first time. Our top finishers were Gabe and Tyler who placed 28th and 33rd. One of the best races of the day came from Bentley as he placed 3rd for our team. The Varsity girls sat 4 runners and still placed 2nd overall at the meet. The team was led by a top 10 finish from Adri who was followed closely by Brooklyn. Brinley, Jenna, and Emma rounded out our scoring. In the JV boys race, we saw continued growth from many runners including strong races from Elijah, Issac C., and Nic. The JV girls finished 3rd and were led by a top 10 finish from Kyanne. She was followed closely by Addi T. and Kylee. Among the other many other good races Macy stood out with one of her best races, yet.

Youngsters Running Club - Our youth club has been rolling for a week, but we are still open for any 6th-8th graders to join us. Practice is Monday and Thursday at 3:00 at PVHS. For questions email Coach Holt at pineviewxc@gmail.com

Thought of the Week: "If your teammates followed your example today instead of your advice, where would you be leading them?"
-unkown
Often we are able to see how others are doing in things such as drills and in workouts. This makes it pretty easy to point out struggles and flaws. Instead of looking at others, however, maybe the best idea would be to lead by example and make sure you yourself are doing everything as best as you can. And then as you find yourself leading by example, mix yourself in with your teammates who may be struggling and lead with your example and proximity instead of words that often fall upon deaf ears and usually pull us apart.

Week of Aug. 19-24 (Week 12)

That first week of school is always a little rough, but we made it through! School and the season are both in full swing, so make sure you are taking the time to keep on top of everything you need to for both.
We have the SUU Invite this weekend - we MUST know who will be attending the race on Monday at the team meeting!
Also, we've had a schedule change. The SLC Classic has been cancelled. Instead we will be taking the Varsity up to the Viking Invite at Pleasant Grove HS on Saturday 9/21 (leaving Fri).

Purpose of the week's workouts - We will bringing our minutes back up this week as well as getting in some decent workouts, so make sure you are prepared going into the week. We're continuing our SWEP phase which means long runs and long intervals. Our long run will move to its usual Monday time slot of 5:30a (so early, but so much better than trying to run 90 mins in the afternoon heat)

Monday: am - 5:30 (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone meet in the lecture hall and then we will have a short run)
Tuesday: am - 6:15 weights and short recovery run (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Wednesday: am - 6:15 easy recovery run (Level 3, 2 optional, no Level 1 or Freshman/Sophomore) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone) - we will meet at the HS and go to BHNP for the workout (so we probably won't get done until a little later... 5:30'ish?)
Thursday: am - 6:15 weights and short recovery run (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Friday: am - 6:15 easy recovery run and yoga (Levels 2 and 3 optional, no Level 1 or Freshman) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Saturday: Race - SUU Invite at Bicentennial Park in Cedar, bus will leave the HS at 6:30a, race schedule: Var Boys - 8:00, Var Girls - 8:30, JV Boys - 9:15, JV Girls - 10:00 THIS IS THE CORRECT SCHEDULE

(We'll leave this here for another week or so)
Notes for Parents/Family/Friends about races: As a program, we really want to stress the importance of our team cool downs after a race. Often when a race ends, everyone huddles around our favorite runner to give congrats (or condolences) and we aren't able to get out on our cool downs like we need. So we are asking that family and friends don't talk to our athletes until 20 minutes after the race has concluded. This will give each athlete time to rejoin the team and go cool down together. Sometimes this will be hard as we all want to get right in there and slap hands, but if we could work on this 20 minute rule, it will greatly help our team unity as well as help each runner's recovery.
Another important idea is busing and rides - every athlete must ride the bus to the meet. Athletes can ride home with a parent (must be his/her parent or guardian - not an uncle, sister, grandpa, favorite neighbor). And we ask that you don't leave until the whole team is done with all of our races and you sign out with a coach. If a parent needs to leave earlier or doesn't want to stay and watch all the races, that's okay. The athlete can ride the bus home with the team.

Weekly Challenge - Look at the Commitment Contract and choose 1 thing to work on this week.

A few things to be looking forward to - please note these events and plan on attending:
Upcoming Schedule -
*SUU Invite - Saturday 8:00a Bicentennial Park, Cedar - remember, you must be to the full day of school on meet days (but since its Saturday that shouldn't be an issue!)
*Weber State Invite - Friday (8/30) El Monte GC, Ogden - We will be taking our top 7 boys and girls. Leaving Friday morning and returning Saturday afternoon (full itinerary will be sent home later)
*Dixie All-Comers - Tuesday (9/3) St. George GC
*Murray Invite - Friday (9/6) Murray Park - We will be taking each member of the team that meets our travel requirements of practice, logging runs, and attitude. Leaving Friday morning and returning Saturday afternoon (full itinerary will be sent home later)

Week 11 Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder - Caleb Hadlock (Jr.); always lifting people up and looking for a way to contribute a positive attitude to the team.
Tough at Practice - Nic Farmer (So.); has really been really working hard to push himself and those around him to reach a new level.
Best Performance - Jessica Hill (Sr.); had a great race at Cedar - taking the Dub!

Race Report -
Cedar All-Comers - Cedar changed their course up a little and with the heat, times were a bit different than previous years, so it is hard to compare to the past. But, we will be able to look at our improvement through the season when we run the course again in October. In the girls's race, we saw a strong showing up front and many good packs throughout. Jessica led throughout the whole race and took home the win by nearly 40 secs with a very strong time of 18:37. Alli followed in 3rd and Pyper took 8th. We then had a very strong pack of 8 ladies within 30 secs of each other from places 17 to 31 (Jenessa, Emma, Adri, Brinley, Brookly, Allison, Jenna, and Kennis). Some others who had great races were Kylee 39th, Rayne, and Hannah. The team placed 2nd to DH with a score of 38 to 46.
The boys also placed 2nd to DH in a very tight race with a final score of 28 to 33. We were led by Luke who ran an excellent race to place 2nd. He was then followed by Scottie in 4th, JD in 7th, Boston in 9th and Jason in 11th. Like the girls, we then had a strong pack containing Tyler, Gabe, Dakota, Bentley, Matt, Caleb, and Carter all within 30 secs of each other. Kenny and Keaton ran very well in their first full race as Freshmen. And we also saw big improvements from Nic and Nathan.
Overall, it was a very good race for the team - many ran very well and are now able to set good goals for continued improvement throughout the year.

Youngsters Running Club - We will once again be hosting a running camp for 6th-8th Graders. Our Youngsters Club will begin on August 19th and will be held each Monday and Thursday(?) from 3:00p-4:15p at PVHS. The club focuses on developing the skills for and a love of distance running along with team building and the traits for becoming a part of a successful group. We will have more info posted as we get closer to school. For questions email Coach Holt at pineviewxc@gmail.com

Thought of the Week: "Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies."
-Mother Teresa
This is a great time of year to remind ourselves of how important the little things are. What are the little things to you? Make a list of those small, simple things and take time to review how you've been doing on them and refocus to make yourself better at them.

Week of Aug. 12-17 (Week 11)

Thanks for the great summer - we saw a lot of progress in our team throughout the last two months and look forward to even more growth in these next two months. Remember, COMMITMENT is the key to the physical growth we are looking for (and we'll talk about the mental growth in a minute). Thanks for everyone's help at the car wash. It went very well, and hopefully you were able to raise a little money for your XC expenditures. PLEASE BRING $2 FOR EACH CAR WASH TICKET YOU SOLD TO AFTERNOON PRACTICE MONDAY.

Purpose of the week's workouts - This week, everyone will see a little drop in their minutes. With the first week of school and many runs in the afternoon, we don't want to stress the body too much. The new schedule and the beginning of school makes it all the more important to be taking care of yourself - you must stay hydrated, so drink a lot of water, make sure you are rolling and stretching after runs, keep (or start) eating healthy and allowing your body to have the fuel it needs to rebuild and grow, and most importantly REST - make sure you have set a goal for yourself about when you are getting to bed to get enough sleep and then arrange your day so that you are successful at doing it.

IF YOU HAVE PINE VIEW GEAR, WEAR IT TO PRACTICE!

Here's our schedule for the week - (a little different with the beginning of school - all practices at PVHS unless noted, am practices we will meet by the glass room/weight room, afternoon practices we will meet under the marquee at the front of the school). Afternoon practices will generally run from 3:00p - 5:00p.
Monday: am - 6:00 (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone meet in the lecture hall and then we will have a short run)
Tuesday: am - 6:15 weights and short recovery run (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Wednesday: am - 6:15 easy recovery run (Level 3, 2 optional, no Level 1 or Freshman/Sophomore) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Thursday: am - 6:15 weights and short recovery run (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / RACE - Cedar All-Comers, CHS, Youngsters 6:30p, Girls 7:00p, Boys 7:30p (app.); Bus will leave PVHS at 5:00p - everyone MUST ride the bus to the meet, athletes may ride home with your parent after all the races are done and athlete has been signed out by parent.
Friday: am - 6:15 weights and short recovery run (Levels 2 and 3 optional, no Level 1 or Freshman) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Saturday: on own or organize your own group run

Notes for Parents/Family/Friends about races: As a program, we really want to stress the importance of our team cool downs after a race. Weekly Challenge - Take time to reflect on where you have been in your running and where you are now and how that journey has progressed for you.

A few things to be looking forward to - please note these events and plan on attending:
Upcoming Schedule -
Renegade Camp - we will be discussing when to hold Varsity Camp (so top 10-12 runners take a look at your schedules and we will talk about it on Monday)
Cedar All-Comers - Thursday 7:00p CHS - remember, you must be to the full day of school on meet days

Week 10 Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder - Nathan Hadley, So. Nathan is new to our team this year and has not only seen a huge increase in his performance over the summer, but has become a great team member. His energy and enthusiasm is almost as infectious as Chad's!
Tough at Practice - Adri Baker, Fr. Adri brings that Baker toughness to everything she does. Not surprisingly, she is looking to be a major contributor to the team for years to come.
Best Performance - Scottie Bushar, Jr. Scottie ran a killer time trial and "set the record" - kind of! But he did one of our team's best performances ever at the BHNP course.

Race Report -
PVXC Time Trial - On Monday we had our time trial at Bloomington Hills North Park. The 2 mile course uses the 1st and 3rd laps of the BHNP XC course. There were some strong showings on both the girls and boys side, with many athletes showing improvements upon previous years. Our top three boys were Scottie, Luke and JD. On the girls side Jessica set a new school record for the course. She was followed in the top 3 by Pyper and Emma.
Desert Relays - Friday we held a combined practice with DH for our annual Desert Relays. Both races were extremely close and decided by a 27-28 score with DH coming out on top. Our top girls team of Jessica, Alli and Emma won 1st with Jessica and Alli taking home plates. Alli set the record for Leg 2 and now holds the record for all 3 legs! For the boys, Luke ran a strong 2nd Leg to bring home the bowling pin. On both sides, our strength was our 3-5 teams. The best thing about this is the depth of our program. On our team, everyone can contribute and play a role in our success.

Thought of the Week: "I'm strong because I've been weak. I'm fearless, because I've been afraid. I'm wise, because I've been foolish."
-RZA
You can't go wrong with words from the Wu-Tang Clan (or maybe you can! but not it this case). If "commitment" is the key to a physical growth, having a "growth mindset" is the key to a mental growth. A growth mindset means being able to look at situations and being able to grow from them - not limiting yourself because of struggles or weaknesses. Looking at this quote, we can see that the times that we've struggled are really the times that have made us strong - if we look to grow from them and use those experiences as stepping stones. To become strong, you have to grow from times you've been weak. To overcome fear and anxiety, you have to learn from times you've been afraid. To be smart, you learn from times you've been dumb! To become a better runner, you look at the things that have held you back and grow to overcome them. Remember Adri's piano recital... and find your own piano recital moment to help you become stronger, more fearless, and wiser in your running/racing and in life!

Week of Aug 5-10 (Week 10)

What a great camp! Thanks to all those who helped and participated: parents who drove, captains and committee who planned and carried it all out, cooks for the great food, bears for not bugging us, rain for only coming one day. We missed everyone who wasn't able to make it. Now it's time to build on all the great stuff we learned and get ready to implement it.

Purpose of the week's workouts - We continue our SWEP phase of our training. This week will be very busy, so we will outline it here and below. On Monday we have our time trial at Bloomington Hills North Park (there are a couple different entrances to the park, I would suggest taking Vermillion off of Fort Pierce and parking in the small parking lot within the park). Practice will start (at the park) at 7:00a and we will begin the race at approx. 7:45 (parents are invited to come cheer). Bring your race shoes (xc spikes) to change into if you have them. Tuesday we will meet for a trail run (location TBA) at 7:00a. Weds.through Friday we will meet at PVHS at 7:00a. We will also have afternoon practice as a team on Tuesday and Thursday - we highly recommend you start doing some afternoon running to acclimate to the heat. Wednesday evening at 7:15 is team night at the St. George Running Center - food, prizes, discounts on shoes. On Friday evening we have a race - 6:00p at Bloomington Hills North Park. This race is a relay with DH were each runner on our team will run about a mile on a 3 person relay team. We really need everyone to be there. And finally, on Saturday, we have our car wash. Get selling your car wash tickets to fundraise for any of your XC costs. We will meet as a team at the Bubble Bath Car Wash at 8:00a on Saturday for our run and then we will do the car wash from 10:00a-2:00p.

Shout out to Jessica and Alli who are ranked #9 and #8 in the Milesplit Utah Preseason poll!

Thought of the Week: "Losers assemble in little groups and complain... but winners assemble as a team."
-Bill Parcells
Sometimes athletes and/or parents wonder why we do so much as a team. This week is a great example; we are so busy - and on the last week of summer. Why? Well because of this quote. Teams that want to be successful and build a positive culture spend time together. Those that were at camp, think of all the great things we did together: the classes, hiding from the rain, sleeping in vans or a stinky "hype" tent, long hill runs, crazy trail runs, playing games, sharing xcestimonies... all these things we do together create a bond that can't be broken. So we are going to keep doing tons of team things, and we encourage everyone to avoid those little groups that pull away and complain about things.
