Those going to Nike, here is our itinerary. The cost of hotels and transportation drove our cost up a bit; however, with a little help from a donor, we are able to keep the cost at $160. Could you please finish your payment early this week.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit."
-Patricia Leavy
Maybe this is more of a beginning of the season quote, but I actually kind of like it here at the end of a season. It is a good reminder of what we have been doing for months (and for many of you, years). Each day, each drill, each run, every time you wake up early for a run and it is hot or cold or rainy, every team activity you go be a part of, each time you reach out to a teammate and tell them they did a good job or that you missed them at practice, or all the many, many other things we do in this program... every one of those times you are planting seeds, watering them, taking care of the ground, then pruning and all that other farm stuff. And then, eventually, the time will come to eat the fruit. Hopefully at some point in this season, you've been able to see some of the rewards of all your hard work. And also, hopefully, you've grown through some of the positive experiences (and even the difficult ones) in a way that will help you continue to work on "planting the seed" in the future and we can all connect this season to the many more season to come - in running and life.

Nov. 6-11 (Week 23)

It was kinda nice to get back into the groove a little this past week. We had a fun Halloween Run (with probably our best costumes ever, and our worst ice cream experience), and doing our routine of mornings, weights, and yoga should have helped the body get back into a decent flow.

We are getting ready for our banquet. Athletes, could you please fill out this form by Monday with your thoughts on awards. We know that not everyone will be able to make the banquet, but we want as many of you there (athletes and families) to celebrate these amazing kids as possible. So we are planning on Nov. 16th (Thursday) in the evening (probably around 5:30p).

Those going to Nike, make sure you have turned in your permission slip (the official one that we got at practice last week) by Monday! If you don't have one, look here.

Also a note on the time change... use this as a chance to get a little extra sleep. Instead of going to bed at your usual time, go to bed when you feel tired. This should help you adjust to a little earlier bedtime - maybe taking what used to be 10:00p and moving it closer to 9:00p. I know, seems early, but sleep is the best performance enhancer there is. So stay on top of your school work while staying away from things that add a distraction from sleep and get to bed a little earlier.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for this week's workouts. We're going to get back into our regular schedule, so that means some cold mornings - dress warm, but make sure we are always in white/bright for those dark runs (and there is nothing wrong with lights or reflective gear either).

This Week's Schedule:
*Wear WHITE or BRIGHT to ALL AM PRACTICES*
MondayAM - 6:15a PVHS (Black and Silver required; no Maroon) / Afternoon - regular practice at 3:00p PVHS (everyone - no team meeting today)
TuesdayAM - 6:15a Weights and short run PVHS (Black, Silver required; Maroon optional) / Afternoon - regular practice at 3:00p PVHS (everyone)
WednesdayAM - 6:15a regeneration run PVHS (Black required; Silver optional; no Maroon; no Freshmen), Yoga at 6:45a everyone invited / Afternoon - regular practice at 3:00p PVHS (everyone)
ThursdayAM - 6:15a Weights and short run PVHS (Black, Silver required; Maroon optional) / Afternoon - regular practice at 3:00p PVHS (everyone)
FridayAM - 6:00a PVHS (Black required; Silver and Maroon optional) / Afternoon - (Black and upper-class Silver required; no Fresh/Sophs or Maroons)
Saturday: TBA

Upcoming Events:
  • RACE: Nike Southwest Regional, Saturday 11/18, itinerary and final payment info coming out soon.
  • Fossil Ridge Turkey Trot: we've been invited down to help out with the Turkey Trot again. This is a great event and a way for us to do some recruiting. So if you can help out, please do. 11/21 12:00p-2:00p
  • RACE: PVXC Dream Mile, Tuesday 11/28, we'll be racing a 1600m at practice (team time trial). We invite everyone to get in one last race before we head into our 2-week break.

Especially during the first week - don't do anything. During the second week start doing some biking, swimming, whatever (if you want) - but no running. We want you to really want to get going again. Enjoy the mental and physical break and be ready to start our rebuild right before and during Christmas break. First day back - 12/18 3:00p out at the track.
Race Report:
Autumn Classic - 2023 results (not posted yet, sorry). Very solid stuff at the Autumn Classic. From those who finished up front to those competing in their first track 3200, everyone ran very well. (Maybe we need a band marching it up every race!) It was a lot of fun to see so many of you really out working and putting yourself in the uncomfortable, yet awesome, position of racing for your best effort.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Legacy is not what I did for myself. It's what I'm doing for the next generation ."
-Vitor Belfort
Last spring, our captains chose the motto "Building the Legacy" to focus our the continued development of the ideas of those who came before us - ideas of hard work, commitment, kindness, tradition, overcoming obstacles, being the best we can be, and mores - and preparing the younger generation to carry on this legacy. So many of you have really bought into and lived this theme throughout the year, as well as carrying it into your everyday lives. Thank you for being such a great group and understanding that our greatest legacy really is preparing those who follow after us to do great things as well.

Oct. 30-Nov. 4 (Week 22)

What a great State meet! Both Varsity squads picked a great time to have their best team races. The Hype Squads were as hype as ever. We had amazing support from family, friends, and alumni. It was a wonderful day... exactly what Pine View XC is all about.

As we turn our attention to the post-season, just another push for everyone to keep running. We will take some time off in December and rejuvenate mentally and physically. But for now, we want to keep building on the amazing shape we are in and run some fast races.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for this week's workouts. We're going to get back into our regular schedule, so that means some cold mornings - dress warm, but make sure we are always in white/bright for those dark runs (and there is nothing wrong with lights or reflective gear either).

Race Report:
State - 2023 results. Great time to run our best team races of the season! The girls started us out well and placed 5th overall. Emmalee led the way with a 16th place finish. Kate followed with a 26th place finish. Brecken, Elle, and Katie rounded out our scoring with 32nd, 34th, and 39th place finishes. Brianna took 52nd (check out this article about her from the St. George News) and Vanessa 75th. This was the first time all season we beat both DH and Cedar at the same meet. It was a very solid team effort. The boys also beat DH and Cedar for the first time at the same meet all season while taking 4th overall. Talmage led the way earning medalist honors with his 9th place finish. He was followed closely by Bridger in 13th and Bender in 16th. Kyler, 34th, and Porter, 38th, finished up our scoring. Trevor ran another great race and placed 47th, while Evan finished 71st. St. George News Article

JV State - 2023 results. We had a few of our athletes go up to Spanish Fork and compete in the JV State Championships on Saturday. Laura and Samantha ran well for our girls. Jake led the way for the guys with a close pack of Ian, Brennan, Nate, and Elliot following behind. And Nathan also hit a PR. Proud of you for being brave to head up there and get a great race in (even in the cold).

Alumni Updates:
It was conference weekend in the NCAA. Julien ran very well for Utah Tech at the WAC championships taking 3rd for the team and helping them place 5th. Both Jessica and Carson raced for Weber in the Big Sky championships. Jess was 6th finisher for the Wildcats and Carson was 7th.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"It's not about impressive workouts. It's about stacking week after week, month after month, of good solid hard work. Give me months on end of solid consistent work over some lights-out workouts, any day."
-Steve Magness
We've actually had this quote recently. But as we head into the "off-season" this is a very important thing to think about. I've had numerous people asking why we are still running - "You just had State, why are you still having practice?" This quote is the answer. Distance running is so different than almost any other sport. It's not skill-based, it is endurance-based (even our quicker stuff like 800s). So if you really want to excel you've got to keep developing it. Don't worry, we'll take a little downtime in December for a couple weeks. If we look at where we want this program to go, however, and where you want your individual running to go, now is an important time to keep stacking the weeks and keep on building with consistency.

Brook ran at the Utah Invite hosted by the U of U. She was the 12th finisher for the Utah State women in the 6K.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"What if it all works out?"
-Melanie Robbins
What if we all spent as much time and energy thinking about the good things that could happen when we absolutely go for something instead of using so much energy being worried about what bad things could happen? Every time a worry comes to your head about "What if (something negative)...?" I challenge you to switch the thinking to "What if it all works out?" Why shouldn't it all work out? You've done the work; you deserve it as much as anyone else!

Although only 7 runners can compete in Varsity, we want everyone to know that every single one of you helped contribute to this accomplishment and to this team as a whole. Race Report:
Divisionals - 2023 results. This was our first time participating in Divisionals. We entered the race confident that we would qualify for State (top 10 in each race for 4A), so we decided to work on a few things to get ready for State. Both teams placed 3rd in their respective race and solidly moved on to State.

Youngsters Info:
There is a race at Grandpa's Pond in Hurricane on Wednesday. Look for updates from Coach Martha. Again, Youngsters who want to practice with the HS after your season ends are able to and we will modify runs to your ability. Come out and see what the next opportunity of running is there for you.

Alumni Updates:
Good job to Julien and Keaton on their races for Utah Tech down at the Highlander Invite in Riverside, Ca. this past weekend. J had a strong race and just missed breaking 25:00 for 8K. Carson and Jessica both traveled with Weber State to participate in Pre-Nats in Virginia. Carson was the 6th scorer for the Wildcats with a time of 24:55 (8K) and Jessica was the 5th finisher for the Weber women finishing the 6K in 22:11.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Confidence comes from being good, not great. Anyone can have the starts align and have a great day. But the confidence from that is fleeting. Confidence comes from consistency. Show up and make your normal pretty darn good."
-Steve Magness
This might be geared toward our Varsity a little as we prep for State coming off a Divisionals race where things were kinda mid, but as usual its a message everyone of us can grow from. The reality of this running thing (as in life) is that is a long journey. And sometimes we get stuck in the present and think about maybe not a great performance or that some other team did something great or whatever. Despite this, we need to be thinking in the long-term. Every one of us could go back through the season, into the summer, and (for many) back years and years and see that we have been consistently good for a long time (and I don't mean the team, I mean each individual). You have been to practice nearly everyday. Working hard nearly everyday. Having good runs nearly everyday. Having fun nearly everyday. Having good races nearly every week. And when we add in a few really goods to balance out those bummers that happen sometimes, we see that each one of us has been consistently good. And consistently good is actually a really good thing! So take confidence (REAL confidence) from know that each of you have work very hard on this journey and deserve to do very well for yourself and your team. We are very proud of everyone of you!

Oct. 9-14 (Week 19)

Congrats to the whole team on a successful Region meet this past week. It was great seeing so many of our teammates have great races and continue to improve. To those who didn't quite get what they wanted (individually or as a team), just remember that the journey is bigger than the actual result. Think back to all the great things we have done this season: the friendships, the memories, the good times - and know those are the things that will really stick with you. A big shout-out of thanks to those who helped at the marathon and those who helped with the Youth meet. Thanks for your help and for being willing to get up early and sacrifice a little of your own sleep and sticking around after practice on Wednesday to help out others.

A couple notes (leaving this us from last week as just a reminder):

JV State and Foot Locker West - we've had many show interest in attending these meets. Attendance at both of these post-season meets will be organized by the athletes/parents. So don't wait. Start talking to your teammates and making plans for travel if you want to attend.

Nike Southwest - our PVXC Club will be taking a bus down to Phoenix for this meet for those who want to go. Info will be coming out this week.

Practice after Region - For JV that choose, the season officially ends with Region. It's been a long season and some might want to be done practicing; that is okay. For Varsity, and those JV that want to attend state to cheer (we will take app. 30 JV plus the Varsity), you are expected to keep coming to practice following our regular schedule (including during Fall Break, unless plans are made with coaches - Varsity needs to be at practices during break). As we move into the post-season, we would really like to encourage everyone (who isn't in a winter sport) to keep running. Distance running is different than almost every other sport. Because it is an aerobic-based activity, the body needs to continue building day after day, week after week, and season after season. A prolonged time off (like during winter, or even skipping all the way through spring and not doing track) will greatly hinder your development. Of course, we will need some downtime, so we do take a couple weeks off and then start a build again through December. But to really develop, the linking of seasons from summer and fall XC to winter and spring track and then back to XC is a must. So please think about your goals and how you want to develop and the commitment that this then requires and hopefully, you'll join us through the winter and track (even if you don't plan on traveling to post-season XC races).

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for this week's workouts. Our varsity team will be focused on the Divisional race this week and then prepping for State. Our JV crew, our goal for you is to keep motivated and hit a few good workouts over the next few weeks to keep running strong.

This Week's Schedule:

She was followed by Laura (who saw a lot of growth over the season), Alianna, Laney, and Sariah in 24th, 25th, 28th, and 39th place. The JV boys took 2nd - Grant medaled with his 7th place finish. Parker (11), Carson (13), Liam (15), Ian (16), Brennan (17), and Carter (18) followed him with top 20 finishes. The Varsity girls took 2nd - Elle, Brecken, and Kate earned medalist honors with their 5th, 6th, and 9th place finishes, respectively. Emmalee finished 12th and Katie 15th to round out the scoring. Brianna was 16th and Vanessa 32nd. The Varsity boys took 3rd - Talmage and Bridger were in the mix at the front throughout the race and finished 3rd and 4th. They were followed by Bender in 17th, Kyler in 18th, Porter 21st, Trevor 26th, and Evan 27th. Another great showing for PVXC at our Region level!

Athletes of the Week - (I really can't remember who earned what... sorry! But you're all still awesome)
Team Builder: Elle, Sr. Ever since moving to our school, she has been someone who brings everyone together and brings out the best in everyone.
Tough at Practice: Evan, Sr. This dude is always grinding. His consistent hard work this year has led him to securing a Varsity spot.
Performance of the Week: Samantha, Fr. Her improvement of over 5 minutes from the first Cedar race to now, shows her hard work and commitment to herself and the team.

Youngsters Info:
Practice is held at PVHS at 3:00p on Monday. This is the last practice of the season. Ice Cream Run to Artic Circle. Bring a dollar and have some fun with the team. There is a race at Grandpa's Pond in Hurricane next week. Look for updates from Coach Martha. Again, Youngsters who want to practice with the HS after your season ends are able to and we will modify runs to your ability. Come out and see what the next opportunity of running is there for you.

Alumni Updates:
Good job to Julien and Keaton on their races for Utah Tech up to the SUU Invite this past weekend. J continues to be in the top 5 for the Trailblazers and Keaton is learning a lot about running at the collegiate level.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"You don't get results by focusing on results. You get results by focusing on the habits and behaviors that produce results"
-@bechampionminded
This is probably a great time to remind everyone about some things we talked about in the summer. Specifically the idea of focusing on the purpose of everything we do each day. Why do we do warm-up drills and post-run work like we do? Why do we do each workout? Why do we hold morning practices? Lift weights? And on... Because these are the habits and behaviors that produce results. Are you doing each of these things in ways that will build the results you want? Or are you just going through the motions and kinda being here? Those who see the best results, growth, and success are evaluating themselves each day in each behavior and doing the best they can each day.

Oct. 2-7 (Week 18)

It's Region Week! It's exciting to finally be here. We've worked very long and hard through a hot summer and early mornings, through good races and bummas, and with some of our best friends to get to this point. And now, we deserve to do great. So get good rest, stay healthy, control the things you can control. And let's all have a great attitude and be ready to succeed.

A couple notes:

JV State and Foot Locker West - we've had many show interest in attending these meets. Attendance at both of these post-season meets will be organized by the athletes/parents. So don't wait. Start talking to your teammates and making plans for travel if you want to attend.

Nike Southwest - our PVXC Club will be taking a bus down to Phoenix for this meet for those who want to go. Info will be coming out soon.

We continue in our Competition Phase where we want to give everyone a chance to really have great races. Although we still need to keep our aerobic engines strong, we don't focus as much on the long run; instead, we continue the growth of race pace (and touch on sub-race pace) development.

Race Report:
Cedar Invite - 2023 results. We had another strong meet up in Cedar. Our Youngsters, once again, did a great job. Then from our JV squads to our Varsity squads, we saw a lot of improvement in times and place throughout the race and in comparison to our first race of the season in mid-August. Here's a look at how we improved over the season from our first race in Cedar in August to now (and over the years for the Sophs-Seniors). PVXC Record (2016-present)

Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder: Nate, Fr. He has a great attitude and work ethic. The future is very bright for Nate.
Tough at Practice: Cannon, So. He has really worked hard this year and pushed himself.
Performance of the Week: Sariah, So. She ran her first Varsity race up at TwiKnight and has shown great improvement throughout the season.

Youngsters Info:
Practice is held at PVHS at 3:00p on Mondays and Thursdays for 6th-8th graders. Youth race Wednesday at PVMS 5:00p. Be there 30mins early. Look for updates from Coach Martha about the last few practices of the year. After the Youngster season ends, you are invited to come run with the HS team if you'd like (don't be scared, we'll modify workouts for you!)

Alumni Updates:
Jessica and Carson went out to Notre Dame representing Weber State on Friday. Both ran very well and are right around 4-6 on their respective teams. It is great seeing Panthers continue to do great things in running (and life). We're very proud of these two. By the way, take a second and look at where both Jess and Carson rank on our Cedar Invite records (up above). These are two amazing people who trusted our program and the coaching and worked for years (even through the winter; notice we are pushing that a bit?!) to become the amazing contributors to our HS and their university programs.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Too often we hold on to the wrong ideas on competition... that we need some weird mix of fear, punishment, and to be pushed. When in reality all we need is to have the freedom to take risks, to see what is possible. That comes from joy, support, and security."
Steve Magness
This seems like a good thought as we approach the last regular season race for many and the championship season for others. Coaching for over 20 years (on top of my own 35 years of racing/running) I've seen (and experienced myself) the first thought all too often - that feeling of fear and worry about an important race and that someone will be mad if the best race isn't run. But those who I have seen reach their peak performance when it matters most are those who live by the second thought - that racing when extremely fit is an opportunity to take a risk, to experience the great joy of being brave and seeing what is possible from all your hard work, while knowing that everyone around you loves you, supports you, and is excited to see you give your very best and your growth in action. Please know that those final thoughts are how your coaches, your teammates, and your family feel right now. There is no need to be scared or timid as you approach this week (and the weeks to come). We all love you, trust you, and are excited for you to exemplify your best self out on the course!

Sept. 25-30 (Week 17)

It's crazy that we are at the end of September. It's been a great journey, and there is more to enjoy, but we want each of you to take a minute and look back at where you've come from this year (and even years past). Hopefully in this reflection you see great growth and a lot of good memories.

Also, if you haven't had a chance to look at the post from mid-week last week about the post-season races, please go back and read over it with your parents and discuss what your plans will be. This is to help us get things planned and we need pretty accurate numbers to plan transportation and hotels and stuff. Not that this is a full commitment, but please take a look.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for this week's workouts. We continue in our Competition Phase where we want to give everyone a chance to really have great races. Although we still need to keep our aerobic engines strong, we don't focus as much on the long run; instead we continue growth of race pace (and touch on sub race pace) development.

Race Report:
Dual w/ DH - We haven't had time to type of the results yet, but we'll blame that on the lightning from Wednesday. Nevertheless, we had some very good races over the two days. On Wednesday, the Youngsters started us off very well and showed off some future Panthers. Then the girls were able to start, but not fully finish their race. Alianna ran very well and won the shortened version of the race. Bouncing back on Thursday, she ran well again and placed 4th. The boys had a strong showing with Gaige taking the win, followed by Jake and then a whole crew of Panthers (that I can't remember the order to because the results are in my classroom!)

TwiKnight - 2023 results. This was our first trip up to TwiKnight, and it was a fun meet with great competition. Carter (9th), Liam (12th), and Ben (31st) got us started off well in the Fr/So race. Grant did well in the Jr/Sr race placing 26th. In the Varsity girls' race, Kate and Emmalee led us with a 7th place finish taking 20th and 21st. Elle, Katie, Brecken, and Vanessa all finished between 40th and 50th and we had our tightest 1-5 spread on the year. The boys also had a tighter spread (40 secs. 1-5, and 49 1-6) than we've had throughout the season in taking 8th. Bridger was our top runner in 35th, followed by Talmage, Porter, Kyler, Bender, and Trevor.

Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder: Brianna, Sr. She has a great attitude and really works on building everyone around her, while at the same time pushing herself to the Varsity level.
Tough at Practice: Joseph, So. In his first year of running, has really been pushing himself at practice and grown a lot throughout the year.
Performance of the Week: Bender, So. After building on an excellent track season, has really grown into a solid Varsity scorer this season.

Youngsters Info:
Practice held at PVHS at 3:00p Mondays and Thursdays for 6th-8th graders. Youth race Wednesday at Cedar HS 3:30p. Coach needs to know for sure who is going to race on Monday at practice (no day of race registration)

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Having a purpose is incredibly powerful. My dog goes on runs. In the Texas heat, he gets tired and slows down, trotting along looking like he's all out of energy. Then he sees a squirrel... and takes off in a dead sprint... If it matters to you, you'll find the energy."
-Steve Magness
This is a great way to think of things. When the dog has energy for the squirrel, if a kid has the energy to sprint past the cheering team, if a struggling runner finally finds the energy for a final kick, it shows that THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING IN THERE! You just have to want whatever the goal is enough to dig it out. When coaches and teammates and family are all cheering you on and believing in you, use it to believe in yourself and go get that goal you want or those runners up ahead for the team. In the words of a team motto from a few years back, "How bad do you want it?".

XC Post-season meets

Please fill out this form for XC post-season meets

Each year PVXC Club takes trips to some post-season meets. The purpose of this is to help bridge the gap between XC season and track season (with the goal of encouraging all our athletes to participate in track and keep building season upon season and year upon year). These meets are also an opportunity for our team to continue to build bonds and progress toward our team and individual goals.

Sept. 18-23 (Week 16)

We had another great week of PVXC. Much of the team traveled up to PreState on Weds and did very well. Then we ended the week with some very good workouts to set us up for a strong push into our championship season in the next few weeks. We are getting pretty close to the end of our regular season, so like we talked about on Thoughtful Thursday, now is a great time to be doing things just a little better... with Purpose!

Although we still need to keep our aerobic engines strong, we don't focus as much on the long run; instead we continue growth of race pace (and touch on sub race pace) development.

Race Report:
PreState - 2023 results. We had great weather, a little cooler with some cloud cover, and it was great to be on the State course. The races were divided into grades (Fr/So and Jr/Sr), so we were able to work on a few different things individually and as a team. In the Fr/So races the girls placed 11th and the boys 2nd (just 3 points off a powerhouse Herriman team). Emmalee led the way with a 2nd place finish and Sariah had a strong race placing 40th. Bender led the boys with a 6th place finish, then Trevor 12th, Liam 25th, and Carter and Ben 27th and 28th. The Jr/Sr boys ran very well and took 4th behind some nationally ranked programs. Bridger and Talmage ran very well and took 7th and 8th, Porter 20th, and Kyler 22nd. The girls took the win (and were 2nd in the full meet merge behind national top 15 team American Fork). Leading the way was a strong duo of Kate in 3rd and Brecken in 5th, followed by Elle in 11th, Katie 21st, and Brianna 26th.

Alumni Report:
Julien and Keaton raced for Utah Tech down at the UC Riverside invite in Riverside, Ca, this weekend. Julien ran the 8K course in 25:28 and placed 3rd for the TrailBlazers and Keaton ran a time of 27:12.

Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder: Evan, Sr. Has a great attitude and has really committed to helping the team through his efforts and bringing out the best in his teammates.
Tough at Practice: Kyler, Sr. Has developed into a great leader and really pulls the team together in workouts.
Performance of the Week: Laura, Fr. Has shown a lot of growth in her racing throughout the season. She's got a great future ahead of her.

Youngsters Info:
Practice held at PVHS at 3:00p Mondays and Thursdays for 6th-8th graders. Youth race Wednesday at the same location as the HS on the west side of the airport 6:00p, be there early for registration and warm up. Also, uniforms can be picked up Monday at the beginning of practice in Coach Holt's classroom. There is a $10 option for lightly used and a $20 option for new.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Observation: the people who sustain success over the long-haul are rarely shooting for success. They are focused on the path. Their goal is mastery, which knows no end."
-Steve Magness
This is a great quote that not only goes along with what we talked about on Thoughtful Thursday, but goes along with our team motto this year of "Building the Legacy". The Legacy is all about your journey and the journey of our program. When we are continually seeking to do our best through mastery of even the seemingly simple skill (seeking a purpose in all things) we will have continued growth throughout our journey.

Race Report:
Dixie All-Comers - 2023 results. It was nice to not have it 110 degrees this year, but it's still always a bit hot at BHNP. The teams did great. The Cuties (Youngsters!) got us off to a great start with some very solid racing. Then the girls ran. Our top finisher was Sariah in 17th. Cassie had a great race, and Laura continues to show a lot of growth and improvement as they finished as our 2nd and 3rd runners. The boys ran really well and took third (behind Hurr and Crimson varsity). Liam led the way with an 8th place finish and Gaige was 10th. We also had strong races from the Freshman crew as they keep improving and growing.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"For a sprinter the thrill is going fast, but for a distance runner it is the journey in between the start and the end."
-unknown
A student was asking me about XC and why we run, and the answer I gave was a lot like this thought. Distance running is a very interesting thing - in that it hurts, its hot, in a way kinda crappy. But what is so great is to be part of this great journey. As a coach, it is watching each of you grow and overcome trials and adversity. To see you become better runners, teammates, and people. It's about all that. I don't know a lot of things we do in life that encompass all of those important aspects as well as distance running does. What a great thing. I just love it!

Timpanogos Invite - 2023 results. The Varsity and a few upper JV traveled to Orem to race in the Timpanogos Invite this weekend. The girls placed 12th in the stacked field. We were led by Emmalee and Brecken who placed 42 and 62. The boys took 16th in a race that featured 5 nationally ranked teams. Talmage was our top finisher in 34 followed by Bridger in 57. The graphs on runnercard provide an interesting look at how our team did throughout the race. PVXC Records.

Youngsters Info:

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"The only way you can find out how good you are is by giving yourself a chance. Most of us excuse, rationalize, or give up before we've even given ourselves a shot. Put yourself in position to do something. Don't obsess over whether it'll work out or not. Be there first."
-Steve Magness
One of the things we've tried to build this team on is guts - being brave, putting yourself into a position to do great things. So often it seems that people never even reach the surface of the great things they can do because of barriers they place on themselves. Get out and give yourself a chance to be amazing. Give it a try. An example: we were super proud of Jake at SUU. He went out strong and led through the first part of the race. To do that, he had to set aside fears of dying out or not finishing strong and he just went for it. And although he didn't finish first, he learned a ton about himself and what he can do when he goes for it. These are things that are going to pay off for him big time as he works toward soon being a varsity runner, and then a scorer, and then a guy who is competing for titles and beyond. So be like Jake! Be brave and get out of your own way!

Aug. 28-Sept. 2 (Week 13)

A great week in the books. We made some comments about practice last week, and overall we did much better. Keep striving to find ways to be at practice rather than excuses to not be (if you want a great quote about excuses talk to Porter, her had an epiphany the other day!).

A thought for parents and athletes: our XC program is in the situation that many activities are finding a struggle with right now - a lack of participation. Although we have a solid crew of Freshman, our Youngsters crew has really fallen off on numbers this year, and it has us concerned for the future. The greatest recruiting tool is you (parents and athletes) and your communication with neighbors and friends. We would love if all of you would spread the word around neighborhood and friends. If XC has beneficial to you and you've seen your child (or self) growing, learning, and just generally becoming a better person because of this sport and team, will you go out of your way to share this with everyone you know. We are desperately looking for new athletes (grades 6-12) and hope to keep our program and its tradition of excellence going for long into the future.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for this week's workouts. We move into our Competition Phase where we want to give everyone a chance to really have great races. Although we still need to keep our aerobic engines strong, we don't focus as much on the long run; instead we continue growth of race pace (and touch on sub race pace) development.

Minutes: Update your minutes for Week 12 Minutes (fill out the form for the week we just completed). Congrats to Carson, Nathan, and Talmage who were the only ones to turn in their minutes each week and on earning there Summer 60 Commitment shirts (hopefully we get those in some day).

Race Report:
Cedar All-Comers - 2023 results. Panthers did very well at the SUU Invite. The Varsities went first with the boys securing the team title and continuing their assault on the all-time PV record book. We were paced by Talmage who stuck right up front the whole race and won in an exciting kick (8th all-time PV, 5th all-time PV Sr, 3rd PV Champ). Bridger placed 4th (7th all-time PV Jr), Bender 7th (2nd all-time PV Soph), Kyler 8th (9th all-time PV Sr) and Porter 16th to get a 36-40 win over Cedar. All 3 team averages were in our top 10 SUU records (a race we have records of since 2007): 2nd in Top 5, 3rd in Top 7, and 5th in Top 10! The girls placed three in the top 10 with Emmalee taking 6th (6th all-time PV So.), Brecken 7th, and Elle 9th (all three broke into the PV top 50) to help guide the girls to a 2nd place finish behind Cedar (35-40). The JV boys ran very well and placed all five scores in the top 10 led by Trevor in 3rd, Carter 4th, Liam 7th, Evan 8th, and ultimately Grant's 10th finish by just .07 won the meet for the boys at 32-33 over Cedar. In the JV girls race, Jordyn placed 10th for the Panthers. Some other notable performances were Laura's strong race as our 2nd JV finisher and Elliot, Nate, and Brennan all finishing close together in the JV races to lead our Freshman boys. PVXC Records. Athletes of the Week - (from last week)
Team Builder: Ferrell, So. Continues to bring great vibes to practice and encouraging everyone.
Tough at Practice: Cassie, Sr. In her first year of XC, she has really grown a lot by pushing herself and all those around her.
Performance of the Week: Trevor, So. Had a breakthrough race at Cedar All-Comers taking 6th place on the team.

Youngsters Info:
Practice held at PVHS at 3:00p Mondays and Thursdays for 6th-8th graders.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"XC is a team sport, yes? And how do you help your team? By being the best runner you can be. So don't skip the "little things" and make sure you get plenty of sleep. Your teammates are counting on you."
-Jay Johnson
We always do better when we see ourselves as part of a greater unit. Although running might feel solo, XC is about as true team sport as there is: everyone actually participates and every person can help score or hurt the scores of other teams. And most importantly, everyone of you makes up the great team that is Pine View. So remember, every thing you do (and don't do) is affect our team in either a positive or negative way. So how about going to bed 15 minutes earlier tonight?!
