June 29 - July 4 (Week 5)

(Those who are looking for info about our Youth Summer Running Club for grades K-8, click here and you'll find the info you need *NO RUNNING CLUB THIS WEEK*)

*It is best to view this in the Web Version - so scroll to the bottom of your phone and click "Web Version"*

This week would be a great time to take a minute and think back on how far you've come in your running (even just this past month). It's a very good practice to reflect back on your journey so you can see your growth and find joy in all you have and are accomplishing.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for a link to this week's workouts. This week, you'll see your minutes continue to build and your workouts improving. Hopefully, you are feeling that the first month of the summer's work is starting to show and you are getting into better shape. Use the Weekly Minutes form to go enter the number of days you ran and your total minutes from this past week (Week 4) - good job to the handful of you who have been entering your info each week, keep it up!

This Week's Schedule: bring water and a towel each day (for stretches and drills on grass)
Monday: 7:00a at Washington Elementary (Everyone)
Tuesday: 7:00a at Washington Elementary (Everyone) / PM on own (White, Black, Silver: expected; Maroon: optional; Beginners: no)
Wednesday: 7:00a at Washington Elem and Waffle Wednesday! (Everyone and bring a friend!)
Thursday: 7:00a at Washington Elem. (Everyone) / PM on own (White, Black, Silver: expected; Maroon: optional; Beginners: no)
Friday: 7:00a at Sullivan Park (Everyone)
Saturday: 6:30a at Falls Park (Everyone)

Book Club Reading: No article this week.

Upcoming Events:
  • Waffle Wednesdays - ongoing after each Wednesday am practice.
  • High Altitude Camp - July 13th-16th in Beaver. Those coming to camp MUST be running! You have to be able to complete a full week at the Maroon Level of workouts before coming to camp. Rides: We are so grateful for the parents who have volunteered to drive us up and back from camp. Right now, we have more than enough rides up, but we need more rides back. If you could switch, shoot Coach a message on Binderly.
PVXC Thought of the Week: "The true test of a (person's) character is what (they) do when no one is watching."
-John Wooden
We like to use a quote like this on moratorium week, but it really fits throughout the whole summer. During this week, you won't have any coaches. And often in the summer you'll have vacations and camps and other stuff that take you away from the TEAM. It's during these solo times that you have to put that little bit extra in to wake up, get going, and do the work; when it is really on you because there is no coach there to get on your case, or maybe you're out of town and there is no teammate there to help you get moving - during these times when "no one is watching" is when you really show who you are and what running means to you. Almost everyone wants to have great results at the end. However, the work you put in now (during those times when you had the choice to work or not) is what develops the character, the work habits, the physical and mental toughness to get those results later for you and your TEAM. Let's put in the work whether your in town or not. Let's get our runs in. Let's be CONSISTENT.

Athletes of the Week:
Lydia, Sophomore - in her first year with the team, she has fit right in. She's a very hard worker and bring a great attitude.
Andi, Junior - she is a great teammate and friend to everyone on the team. Even though she was headed out of town, Andi (and others) got out early and hit Steps (and did a great job with it).
Mikiah, Junior - has really been working hard this summer and his running is taking a big jump because of it.

June 1 - 6 (Week 1)

So, for those that are new around here, each week we try and post some things for ATHLETES and PARENTS. Please read all the way through all the stuff and do whatever needs to be done, note important dates, and whatever else. Here's a few things to check out this weekend as we prep for practice on Monday, 7:00a at Washington Elementary:

  • read through the following info for our Athlete/Parent Meeting (with the busy end of the school year, we won't have a full meeting):ATHLETE AND PARENTS
PLEASE LOOK AT THIS SLIDE SHOW TOGETHER - IF YOU AREN'T GETTING OUR TEAM TEXTS (parents and/or athletes) SEE THE INFO IN THE SLIDES
  • get your physical if you haven't yet (make sure you upload pictures of your physical to registermyathlete and then turn in your physical to the HS)
  • get familiar with the Pre-Run Warm-Up stuff (vid below) and Post-Run (SAM vids on the side tab) stuff we do. Also, check out all the docs on the right labeled under "XC Training System Info" and request access to those with your school google account.
  • start running a little - if you run a few times this week 5, 10, 20-25mins it will make a big difference in how you feel next week
  • GO GET SOME FRIENDS TO JOIN YOU! Running is a social activity and having friends out there with you is one of the very best things about XC. Call up some friends and invite them to come out with you
  • Take a look at the slides for Panther Distance Crew Weight Program - each has a video linked to it to help you learn the correct form. Watch these and get a sense of what you would like to do for our first days in the weight room during our 2nd week of practice.
  • HOKA Summer Miles Program - if you want to win some free swag just for doing what you're already doing over the summer, check it out.
  • We would also like to recommend those who are running with a smart watch to connect to Strava, so as coaches (and you as athletes) can view the data from your runs. Here's a quick video for Garmin; Here's a vid for Coros; Here's a vid for Apple Watch; Here's one for FitBit (this one is worth it just for the voice!)
  • Check out "Intro" tab on the workouts (found below) and start thinking about what Level you should be running as we start up the season - we'll help you with this for sure
Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for a link to this week's workouts (you have to request access on your school account to see the workouts, so get that done sometime soon). The goal right now is to build... a big foundation, a big engine... whatever you want to call it, we build! The summer is the most important time in XC. Without building a large base, you won't have anything to go from later. We will also be doing "something fast every day". This is a philosophy we have held for many years at PVXC. Cross Country runners aren't slow - we aren't out getting ready for marathons, we race 3 miles, not jog 26.2 - we push ourselves to run fast right from the start. To help emphasize the importance of summer, we will be instituting the Summer 55 Club... we have 76 days from the beginning of summer XC on June 1 to the end of the first week of school on August 15th. The goal of the Summer 55 Club is to encourage each of you (no matter your level or where you're starting from) to get in at least 55 days of running throughout the summer. We'll track this as we track our Weekly Minutes (do this at the end of the week). Our reward will be a cool running shirt.

This Week's Schedule:
Monday: First Day of XC! Monday 7:00a at Washington Elementary - bring water and a towel (for stretches and drills on grass). (Everyone) - Youth Summer Running Club 8:30-9:45 (everyone plan on staying and helping out)
Tuesday: Regular practice at 7:00a at Washington Elem. (Everyone)
Wednesday: Regular practice at 7:00a at TBA and Waffle Wednesday! (Everyone and bring a friend!)
Thursday: Regular practice at 7:00a at Washington Elem. (Everyone)
Friday: Regular practice at 7:00a at Sullivan Park (Everyone)
Saturday: Form your own groups and get your run in

Book Club Reading: Each summer, we do some reading and talk about it as a team. This summer, we will be reading an article a week about some topic chosen by our captain and coaches. We really encourage everyone (including parents) to read our article and grow from the ideas that are in it. Here is our first article: If You Want to Get Better, Get Comfortable Saying... by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness. If you've been around before, you know that these two have a big influence on our philosophy here at PVXC. Please read through this article; take notes on ideas that seem useful and important; and on Wednesday of next week, we will be talking about it.

Shoes... Shoes... and more Shoes: We don't have a lot of equipment for running, but what we do have is very important... shoes. Parents and athletes, take a look at this short guide to running shoes and when to replace them. There are a lot of places you can get new shoes (specialty stores, online, etc.); however, the key is to get the right fit for your particular foot, not necessarily just the cheapest or cutest. A specialty store will help fit you in the correct shoe. You can also get some help from coaches who have some experience in identifying various foot types and getting you in the correct type of shoe (neutral, cushion, support, stability).

Upcoming Events:
  • OPENING SOCIAL! BRING A FRIEND... Time and date TBA
  • High Altitude Camp - July 13th-16th in Beaver. Cost is $100. We will need to get this planned and figured out who is going, parents driving (staying for all or part). This is a VERY worthwhile event to be a part of... everyone on the team should make it a priority to join us. Those who are new, talk to your teammates about camp and see why you should plan on being there too. Please take a minute and fill out the following form for participation. Registration and Payment are due June 15th.
PVXC Thought of the Week: "Consistency over intensity... Good results take consistency, not heroic efforts... success is not determined by a great day. It comes from stacking month after month of solid days. Consistency compounds."
-Steve Magness
(Honestly this is the same quote we used in Week 1 last year, and we're not even going to change it or our commentary... the idea of consistency is the most important and impactful lesson you can learn to become good at anything. So once again, here are our thoughts)... One of the biggest ideas that we preach at PVXC is CONSISTENCY. It is actually pretty easy to say you want to do something amazing. And any people can go "get it" for one or two days. But to really become the great person (in everything, not only running) it takes a long time of consistent effort. So as we get ready for a long summer and a long season, let's think about consistency. Some people wonder why we start running in June when we don't race for awhile - after all, it's your summer; let the kids chill out and have some time off Coach! But we know that to reach what you want to become, you have to start now, and you have to put the time and effort in for a long time. How can you strive for consistency this summer even as you have vacations and camps and all sorts of other stuff? That's a great question for you to ponder. Those who really make some progress this year will find an answer to it early this summer.

The goal of the Summer 60 Club is to encourage each of you (no matter your level or where you're starting from) to get in at least 60 days of running throughout the summer. We'll track this as we track our Weekly Minutes (do this at the end of the week). Our reward will be a cool running shirt.

Book Club Reading: Each summer, we read a book and talk about it as a team. This summer we are reading (sections of) Boys in the Boat (a little more info in the quote below). You are totally invited to buy the book or find an online version to read or listen to. You can also download a pdf or google doc version of our reading sections here (You've got to request permission to have it shared with you): Week 1 Reading pdf

Upcoming Events:
  • OPENING SOCIAL AT QUAIL LAKE! BRING A FRIEND... Time and date TBA
  • High Altitude Camp - July 15th-18th at Jacob Lake. Cost is $90. Registration and Payment are due by June 24th.
PVXC Thought of the Week: "Having rowed myself since the tender age of twelve and having around rowing ever since, I believe I can speak authoritatively on what we may call the unseen value of rowing - the social, moral, and spiritual values of this oldest of chronicled sports in the world. No didactic teaching will place these values in a young man's soul. He has to get them by his own observation and lessons."
-George Yeoman Pocock
This is from our book Boys in the Boat. We're pretty excited to delve into this book. It is an amazing story and really hits on what we want our program and our team to be about. We implore you to read (ahh... reading over the summer) each week and come to practice ready to discuss your thoughts. You may take a look at this and say, "Well that's great that rowing is so wonderful. What does it have to do with running?" And that is a great question. Our answer would be that rowing and running are very similar - and so are many of our various other pursuits. And as we each Get In The Boat, we will each learn the connection and values that come from these great pursuits. So are you ready to Get In The Boat?!

Youth Summer Running Club is back and will also be starting this week on Tuesday! Check out the info on the previous post and please share it around with families and others who might be interested in participating in our summer club. It's never too late to sign up and join us.

Things you need to do to be ready for practice:
  • take a look at the 2021 schedule and start making some plans.
  • registermyathlete - get it done! Go to registermyathlete.com (the registration part needs to be done this week - physical needs to be complete and on file at PVHS asap.
    Fees can be completed later.
  • We will be doing the lunge matrix, leg swings and SAMs daily. These are great strengthening exercises that will help you get and stay healthy and injury free. So take a look at the videos and learn them.
    • Lunge Matrix video
    • Leg Swings video
    • SAM video
      • Now about this stuff, why do them? No doubt, some of us who know this stuff realize the benefits of these exercises and others aren't so sure about them. Like everything in life, you won't really do a great job with them until YOU buy in. So until you start to realize the benefits of these exercises, maybe you'll just take my word for it - these will help you be stronger; a stronger runner is a healthier runner; a healthier runner is a faster runner...
Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts. The goal of this week is to just get us going a bit. We'll start building our foundation and prepping us for an exciting, successful, and injury-free year.

This Week's Schedule:

Our very first challenge this year is going to be to bring someone to practice and/or the team activity. Call up your friends... bring someone that would benefit from being part of this great team.
Also...
There is this Summer Mile Club put together by Hoka and Athletic.net. Might be a way to earn some prizes and stuff this summer by just doing the thing we are always doing - running! Check it out and see if you want to participate.

Minutes:
Take a look at this form. This is how we will earn our minutes awards for the season as well as tracking goals and progress. You'll fill out your first week info at the end of this week.

Book Club:
We will be getting the first section of our book on Monday. We highly encourage you to take a few minutes each day and read and reflect on the assigned reading for the week. We promise that doing so will help you become a better runner as well as influence you in positive ways in other areas of your life.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"I came away from this experience having learned a fundamental truth about endurance sorts. While my legs and lungs had put in a position to win, it was my mind - particularly my ability to absorb the shock of the novel sensations I felt and my willingness to suffer a bit for the sake of winning - that had carried me over the top. The essential challenge of long-distance racing, I understood, was mental."
-Matt Fitzgerald
This is our first quote from our book this summer. We've really enjoyed reading this book and think you will too - especially as you search for the connections found in the stories to your own running and life. The big idea of the book is no secret... anyone can run, you just put one leg in front of the other; however, the real challenge, the thing that separates those who achieve goals, PRs, make Varsity teams, and beyond, is learning how to make the mental side of this activity work in your favor to unlock your true potential. A goal this year is to help you do that!

Aug 3-6 (Week 10)

A great camp week over... thanks to everyone who helped pull it off: parents who drove and those who joined us for a night or two, camp staff who cooked and transported stuff, all the athletes who kept great attitudes and worked hard, the camp committee, and the captains who put so much work into planning all the activities. Even though we weren't sure we would be able to have camp this year, it turned out to be one of our best yet. Hopefully each of us can take some time, while everything is fresh in our brain, and spend some time thinking about what we learned and deciding how to use it in our own lives and in our own running.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts - we continue the SWEP phase of our workouts. This will include more long CV paced intervals and continued focus on distance and hills. We will use this week and next to help us transition to a 7 day schedule for our runs from the 9 day schedule we have used throughout the summer. We will also continue to acclimate to the heat as we switch up weights to the afternoon and try and get together for those afternoon runs on Tuesday and Thursday.

This Week's Schedule:
We will meet this week Monday at the Bloomington Hills North Park (location below) at 7:00a. After our warm up, we will have our annual end of summer time trial - a 2 mile race on the BHNP course.
https://www.sgcity.org/bloomingtonhillsnorthpark/
On Tuesday through Thursday we will meet at PVHS at 7:00a. And on Friday, we will have a group long run at a location TBA.
Afternoon run schedule: we will meet as a team on Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00p at PVHS for our short regeneration run and weights. Other afternoon runs on your schedule (see workout link above) on your own.

Weekly Challenge:
Take a few minutes and think about what strengths your developed during the summer. Write these down and post them where you can reflect back on your growth.

Minutes:
Not many of you have been turning in your weekly minutes... Please use this form and update your minutes and set a goal for yourself for this coming week (the more specific the goal the better) - and catch up any weeks you might have missed. This is how we will earn our minutes awards for the season.

Book Club:
This Tuesday will be our final book club (we will talk about it on Tuesday afternoon), so make sure you are finishing up the book (and implementing ideas that you found useful).

Other Stuff:
If you haven't done these things yet, please do:
  • if you haven't looked at the Parent/Athlete Meeting slides, please do - this is in place of our Parent Meeting we usually have.
  • take a look at the 2020 schedule and start making some plans - some of the meet changes have been posted.
Upcoming Events:
Race - PVXC Time Trial: August 3rd at Bloomington Hills North Park - practice will start at 7:00a and the race (2 mile) will start at 7:45. Those who come watch are asked to please wear a mask anywhere around the team! This looks like it will be a guideline for all our meets - Fans please wear a mask and stay socially distanced.

Team Night at St. George Running Center: Wednesday, Aug. 5th at 7:15p. Pizza, Spikes and trainers on sale!

Race - Desert Relays: Has been moved to Monday, Aug. 10 at 6:00p.

Race - Cedar All-Comers: Our first full XC meet is schedule for the first day of school, August 13th. MS will race at 6:30p, followed by girls at 7:00p and boys after (app. 7:30p).

Car Wash Fundraiser: He been scheduled for August 15th at the Red Dirt Car and Dog Wash. We will get tickets to sell next week. This will be a great opportunity for you to earn money to help pay for any XC stuff you may need.

Race - Canyon View All-Comers: August 22nd. Times haven't been posted, but it will be in the morning at CVHS.

Race - Timpanogos Invite: Sept. 5th. 8:00a Lake Side Park, Orem. This meet will take place of our overnight team trip (Murray, that was cancelled). Hopefully we get approval to take a full bus.

Youth Summer Running Club Challenge #10:
It's great that a few of you have taken on the challenge of completing a summer of challenges. We sure did miss all of you each Tuesday. Hopefully, we can be back next year. Usually we have two races, one in the middle of the summer and one at the end. So, your Challenge #10 is to race the course you did earlier in the summer and see if you've had some improvement in your time. Those of you who have completed 8 of the 10 challenges need to email Coach Holt at david.holt@washk12.org and let him know so that we can get your awards to you!

Those 6th-8th graders who would like to participate in our Youngsters club, we are very hopeful that we will be able to have it this year. Coach Martha Baker will be running the club, and we are looking for other parents who would like to help. 6th-8th graders who would like to participate and any parent interested in helping, please contact Coach Holt (email above).

Summer Running Club T-Shirts - Unfortunately, we didn't get enough orders to be able to order a shirt this year. So those that ordered one will get a reimbursement soon. However, we have some shirts left from the last few years, so you you would like a shirt and have been completing some of the challenges and running a little this summer, let us know and we'll see if there are any shirts you don't have and we'll get you one of those for free.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"When you peel away the layers of ego and subdue your expectations regarding how the world should be, then what's left? Only life itself."
-Shawn Green
What is all this about? This running? School? Reading a book by a baseball player none of you had ever heard of before? Anything? The answer... ONLY LIFE ITSELF. It's all about helping each of us grow to live the very best life we can. If we can't do that, and we've given up trying, only then have we failed. But if we keep striving to do our best ever day... then we are a success!

July 27-Aug 1 (Week 9)

It's here and we're going to give it a shot... CAMP WEEK! Thanks for all everyone has done in helping plan for camp, and thanks for everyone staying healthy so we can have it. Last week was another strong one capped off by some very positive results at our Pioneer Day 2 Miler. And thanks to all who got their registration and physical done (which was ALMOST everyone).

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts see us move to the SWEP phase of our workouts (which means Speed With Endurace Process). This will include more long CV paced intervals (which we actually did a sneak preview of last week) and continued focus on distance and hills. This phase is really the meat of our training; this is what makes you strong and fast aerobically - ready to handle the rigours of racing a hard 3 miles of XC.

This Week's Schedule:
We will meet this week Monday through Thursday at Washington Elementary at 6:30a to give just a little more time for packing and getting ready for camp. Those who are going will then meet at the Rec Center at 11:30a to pack up and leave. Please see the previous post for packing list and info for drivers. PLEASE REMEMBER ATHLETES AND DRIVERS TO WEAR MASK IN THE VEHICLES. Those not attending camp will practice on their own this week, and we will practice on our own (or with your own organized group) on Friday and Saturday as well.

Weekly Challenge:
Learn and implement the great things we do at camp.

Minutes:
Please use this form and update your minutes and set a goal for yourself for this coming week (the more specific the goal the better) - and catch up any weeks you might have missed. This is how we will earn our minutes awards for the season.

Book Club:
We will be having our final discussion next week, so make sure you are finishing up the book (and implementing ideas that you found useful.

Other Stuff:
If you haven't done these things yet, please do:
  • if you haven't looked at the Parent/Athlete Meeting slides, please do - this is in place of our Parent Meeting we usually have.
  • take a look at the 2020 schedule and start making some plans - we are still in a little flux with some of the meets.
Upcoming Events (CAMP INFO):
High Altitude Camp: July 27th-30th at Pine Lake, near Bryce Canyon. Please keep healthy, wear masks, and try and limit exposure so we can hold our camp. We leave on Monday and camp at a national forest campground and return on Thursday. At camp, we work on team building, run, have classes, do a ton of fun activities, and all sorts of stuff.
- Rides: Thanks to all those that have volunteered to drive - check the list on the previous post for more info
- Tents: Remember to bring them!

Race - PVXC Time Trial: August 3rd at Bloomington Hills North Park - practice will start at 7:00a and the race (2 mile) will start at 7:45.

Youth Summer Running Club Challenge #9:
It was fun to see some of you at our team 24th of July race. This week the team is headed to our camp. One of the best things about camp is getting to run in some new places and on some trails. Your Challenge #9 is to go find a trail (or some dirt) of your own to run on. There are a lot of fun trails to run around town. Talk to a parent and see if they can take you to one (or find one near your house) that you can go run for a little while on. While your running, notice how it is different to run on a trail than on the pavement and have some fun!

Remember, we are doing this in place of our usual summer club. If you are able to do 8 of our 10 weekly challenges you will earn a special award. And if you complete your summer marathon of 26.2 miles, you'll earn your certificate. So use the links below to keep track of your progress and keep up the good work!

Athletes of the Week:
Performance - Kenny Olsen, So. Kenny has earned some great improvements heading into this season. His hard work and leadership are evident every day at practice. At our second 15min Test, Kenny had a great run and helped lead the varsity boys pack to an excellent team effort.
Tough at Practice - Jenna Boyer, Sr. Jenna has been coming back from a difficult injury and continuously pushes herself and others to do their best at each and every run.
Team Builder - Scottie Bushar, Sr. Scottie's leadership is evident in his positive and influential interactions with all his teammates. Each day, he pushes everyone and encourages everyone.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Running is the best method I know for people to learn that they can be so much more than they ever dreamed they could be."
-Greg McMillan
Running is so much more than just trying to be fast or win something. It really is a path to finding your best self. Hopefully this week, you will see that message delivered over and over again, and you can continue to unlock your true potential.

Youth Summer Running Club Challenge #8:
Hopefully you took the chance to look at your eating/drinking for a day this last week and were able to see what you're doing well on and where you could do a little better. This week, we are going to invite you to come to our team 24th of July race. Your Challenge #8 is to join the team on Friday, July 24th at Harvest Lane Park for our 2 mile race. The race will start at 7:30a, so be a little early. You can run, run/walk, we'll even count it if you bike or bring your scooter! And you can definitely bring a friend or some family members. Please just know that we will want to practice good social distancing to keep everyone healthy. If you're not able to make it and want to still get the challenge this week, make your own course around your neighborhood and do your own race.

Remember, we are doing this in place of our usual summer club. If you are able to do 8 of our 10 weekly challenges you will earn a special award. And if you complete your summer marathon of 26.2 miles, you'll earn your certificate. So use the links below to keep track of your progress and keep up the good work!

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Recalling the historic week now, I am struck by how intensely grounded I was in the moment. There was no past, no future, only the present."
-Shawn Green
In this week's section, you are going to read about one of the greatest hitting feats in baseball history. For me it was awesome because I am a huge Dodgers fan and remember when all this happened and how truly historic it was. As a coach, and having our team read this book, this section is the fruits of all the ups and downs, the mental and physical workouts, and everything else all coming together - just like what can happen for us when we put the lessons of the book to practice in our lives. SO TAKE A FEW MINUTES OVER THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS AND READ OUR SECTION THIS WEEK... It is a good one!

July 13-18 (Week 7)

REGISTERMYATHLETE MUST BE COMPLETE TO COME TO PRACTICE THIS WEEK! PHYSICAL MUST BE COMPLETE BY FRIDAY TO COME TO CAMP!

Youth Summer Running Club Challenge #7:
This week our challenge is not going to be a running challenge, but we encourage you to keep going out and getting a run in a few time this week. A big part of a healthy life is what you eat and drink. To keep healthy, it is important to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and limit the sugary treats you eat. It is also very good for your body to drink a lot of water and limit your sugary drinks like soda. Your Challenge #7 is to write down all the food and drink you have for one day this week, then look at it with a parent and talk about how you are doing. When you talk with your parent, you might see that you did very well and had only a little bit of snacks and ate and drank pretty healthy. Or maybe you see that you had more treats than you should. After looking at how you did, see if there are areas you can improve to keep yourself healthy.

"Usually, injuries and illnesses occur when we are lost in time and least capable of being in the moment. Perhaps injuries, illnesses, and failures are sometimes our bodies' way of telling us that it's time to refocus our attention."
-Shawn Green

July 6-11 (Week 6)

Great job to all of you who came out to practice during Captains' Week and showed that you are really working on your commitment to self and team.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts will have us building back up our minutes and hitting a couple good workouts. We will combine our long run with a hill workout - here we go Sand Hill! - and we will continue to build our Pace Work on Thursday.

This Week's Schedule:
We'll keep having practice at Washington Elementary Monday through Thursday this week at 7:00a. On Friday we will have our Run-a-Thon at Sullivan Park. We will begin at 10:00a (so plan on meeting at 9:45a) and go until 10:00p. You will have three assigned times to run where you and a small group of teammates will take turns running a mile (relay style) for about 2 hours. Please know what times you will be able to run, try to have work off, and try and attend as much of the day as possible. During times that your group is not running, we will play games, eat and just hang out. The Run-a-Thon is also an opportunity to raise some money to help you pay for XC things. Info on this will be passed out at practice on Tuesday.
Saturday run on your own or make your own group run.

Weekly Challenge:
At least twice this week, take 5 minutes and spend time meditating and working on strentghening the mind like we've been reading about in our book

Minutes:
Please use this form and update your minutes and set a goal for yourself for this coming week (the more specific the goal the better) - and catch up any weeks you might have missed. This is how we will earn our minutes awards for the season.

(Please keep healthy, wear masks, and try and limit exposure so we can hold our camp.) Cost for camp is $90 (don't pay yet). We leave on Monday and camp at a national forest campground on Cedar Mountain and return on Thursday. At camp, we work on team building, run, have classes, do a ton of fun activities, and all sorts of stuff. We want everyone to attend. Athletes, we need an initial count for planning purposes Monday at practice, so please discuss this with parents and see where you stand (as well as your t-shirt size).

Youth Summer Running Club Challenge #6:
One of our favorite games to play at club is realy races. So this week we are going to challenge you to create a relay race. You're going to need a couple friends or family members to join you, so go recruit some people. Your Challenge #6 is to create a relay race with some friends or family members. It doesn't matter how long your race is or how many people you have in it, just get a group together and have each person run a segment (what we call a "leg"). Maybe you want to run it a couple times and try and beat your time. Or maybe if you have enough people, have two teams and race each other. Whatever you do, just get out and have some fun with a few other people.

"an old Zen saying, 'Before enlightment, chop wood, carry water; after enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.'"
-Shawn Green quoting a Zen saying
Chop wood, carry water... what does it mean? It means you take care of the basics. You get wood for your fire and you get water to drink and cook with. When do you do these things? All the time. You do it while you are learning and you do it after you have learned. You always take care of the basics because those are the things that lead to being your best self. What are the "Chop Wood"s and "Carry Water"s for us in our running and in our lives? It might be a good practice to identify those things and (re)evaluate how each of us are doing on them and what one might do to become more focused on doing them better.

June 29-July 4 (Week 5)

We continue to really put together a great foundation for the season. Those who are coming to practice on a consistent basis are showing great signs of improvement and growth. Last week was a tough and important one and you are all just continuing to push yourself and improve.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts will be a recovery week. Our minutes will drop just a little bit, and although we will still have a couple workouts, the overall intesity of the week will be down a little. Use this time to focus on letting yourself physically and mentally recover a bit. Look back at last week's ideas of sleep, post-run recovery of ice and rolling, and yoga and see if you can improve a bit on each of them.

This Week's Schedule:
We'll keep having practice at Washington Elementary Monday through Thursday this week at 7:00a. Our Friday location will be announced later in the week. Saturday run on your own or make your own group run.

Weekly Challenge:
Let's keep a focus on recovery... Last week we shared our yoga routine. This week, take 20 minutes to do yoga at least once. Use the time to help yourself get connected more to your body and mind.

Minutes:
Please use this form and update your minutes and set a goal for yourself for this coming week (the more specific the goal the better) - and catch up any weeks you might have missed. This is how we will earn our minutes awards for the season.

Book Club:
This week will be kind of a catch up week for our book. So get any sections you need to and read through them and we'll get back to our discussion next week.

Youth Summer Running Club Challenge #5:
In a usual summer, this is our off week of running club. So this week, we are going to take advantage of the time to try and get you some of your miles toward your summer marathon. Your Challenge #5 is to run longer than you have all summer. If you've run for 1 mile, try and run 1 1/2 miles; if you've run for 10 minutes, try and run for more. Get some extra miles in and work toward getting 26 in for the summer.

"It made me a better player. It's helped to make me a better person, not think about what you should or shouldn't have done. Just take this moment in from of you. Focus on that."
-Shawn Green
in an article discussing his use of meditation and focus
