PVXC Thought of the Week: "I stopped caring about results. I started caring about COMPETING."
- Jake Bauers (Brewers baseball player)
This kills me to write this on the heels of the Brewers sweeping the Dodgers out of the playoffs (even that has a life lesson in it, however - you don't win ever time and if all you care about is winning then most of the time you will end up unhappy; but if you can enjoy the journey the people around you and all the great things you do on the way, there is the possibility of always finding joy... but back to the quote). Jake Bauers was a dude who was a moment away from quitting baseball (and only kept going because his wife was pregnant and they needed insurance), and now he is the NLCS MVP. His full quote in explaining his turnaround, "I came into the year feeling like there was really only one person holding back, and that was myself. I stopped caring about results. I started caring about COMPETING." Not caring about the results seems crazy to some... after all, isn't that why we do stuff... to win, to be the best? Actually, no! And when we focus too much on the result (Steve Magness tells us), "it pulls us away from taking the actions that actually help us get there. An outcome obsession... activates more avoidance motivation. Our brain goes into protecting our ego mode because we've told it the results matter so much. We've got to let go... just enough, to get out of our own way." So true! When we care so much about the result that it is the only thing that matters, we actually harm ourselves. We do need to still care about results (you have to care... caring deeply is important, that's what gets you out of bed early in the morning, that's what pushes you to get homework done so you can sleep, that's what helps you dig through that tough repeat), but turn that down a little and realize that it is the COMPETING that gets you the result. So this week, think about simply COMPETING. COMPETE with those around you. COMPETE with those "against" you. COMPETE with your own negative self thoughts.

Race Report:
4A Divisionals - State Qualifying race up at Lakeside Park in Orem. It was cold and very XC'ish. The boys started us off in Section A and took the close win over Orem. Benji stayed up front throughout the race and was able to pull away in the last half mile for the win. Elliot ran solid throughout and took 6th; Nate continues to put up strong results and finished 9th; he was followed by Dustin in 15th, Brennan in 19th, Will D in 20th, and Tyler in 36th. The girls then followed with a good team effort to take 4th in Section B and qualify for State. Tevye took 2nd, Vanessa 13th, Brooklyn with her strongest race of the year in 23rd, Elin in 36th, Lyndie with a nice run to finish 38th, Lydia stepping in well for 50th, and Alyeska in 72nd. Results. St. George News. Deseret News.

Alumni Report: Trey represented UVU out at PreNationals in Indiana and tied for 2nd for the team. Avery was with UNLV out at the Bronco Invite in Santa Clara, California, where she took 7th for the Rebels.

Our Middle School program: This week we will have practice on Tuesday and Thursday after school at PVHS (Youngsters are also invited on Monday at 2:00p). This is a developmental camp hosted by our HS and is available for 6th-8th graders.
