Oct 15 - 20 (Week 20) & Region Recap

What a great week to be a Panther! Great stuff at Region last week and now on to State...

Purpose of the week's workouts - The purposes of last week worked out pretty well, so we'll keep them the same: Run as fast as we can and have as much fun as we can.

Here's our schedule for the week -
Monday: 6:15a at the HS for Levels 2,3,4.  We will be doing a shorter workout on the track.  Afternoon practice on Mondays will always be a team meeting in the lecture hall at the HS followed by a short run.  Practice starts at 3:00p.  Required for everyone.  We will be having team pics Monday afternoon - please be wearing your team uni, you MUST have it to be in the pics (spread the word and remind everyone).
Tuesday: Morning practice: 6:30a short recovery run (no weights). Required for Levels 2,3,4.  Bus will leave for State at app. noon (we will come pick up the MS'ers) - eat lunch at school and then we will go.  Afternoon practice will be up in Sandy by the hotel.  Full itinerary will be sent home to those traveling to State - please remember to pay $25 for hotel to the PVHS finance office or online (bring receipt to Coach Holt.
Wednesday: Morning practice: at the hotel. Required for everyone.  Afternoon: STATE RACE - schedule Girls 1:00p, Boys 2:30p.  We will try and put out a live feed for anyone that can't make it on our Insta @pvxctrack.  We also are getting a spirit bus - spread the word to friends and classmates (it is $20, needs to be paid to the PVHS finance office on Monday); let's get a huge group of Panthers up there to show our school and team spirit!
Thursday: No morning practice. Afternoon practice at 3:00p for everyone going to Nike or who would like to just keep running with us (great time to invite some new friends).
Friday: No morning practice. Afternoon practice at 3:00p for everyone going to Nike or who would like to just keep running with us (also a great time to invite some new friends).
Saturday: Run on your own or organize your own group run.

Region Recap - Thanks, so much, to all the parents that volunteered and helped at the finish line!  We got great praise from Ken (the timer) who said that he'd never had a XC race go so well.  And great job to the team.  There were so many great performances and so much support for your teammates.  (Also a big thanks to all of you who helped out at Youngsters' Region on Monday!)
The JV Girls started the day great and showed the depth and strength of our program.  Jada was in the lead group throughout the race and had her best race of the year finishing 2nd.  Also in the top 10 were Sarah (7th), Jenna (8th), and Allison (10th).  Emma finished our scoring in 11th.  In fact, Pine View had 8 of the top 18 places!  The girls finished 2nd overall with a score of 38 to DH's 22.  Congrats to all the JV Girls on your great seasons; you are an awesome group and bring so much excitement and dedication to our team.
The JV Boys were led by Evan, who had a very strong race up front to get the victory by 15 seconds.  The rest of the scorers really stepped up in the last mile of the race to pull out the team victory over Cedar 36-57.  The last mile saw James and Jason move up in front of a pack of 4 Cedar runners to join Jose in finishing 6th - 8th.  And Zach moved from the middle of the pack all the way to 14 to round out the scoring and place as the top Freshman in the region.  As a group, the whole team did great; many guys broke into the 18:00's or 19:00's that hadn't all year (on a course that isn't the fastest we run all season by any means).  We have a great group of young JV runners who have really learned a lot this year about commitment and pushing the limits.  Keep up the great work guys and it's time to step into the roles of all our graduating Sr.'s.
The Varsity Girls had one of their better team races of the year.  Up front was a great battle for the individual title.  Jessica and Alli led through part of the race together.  Then Jessica was up front alone pushing to hold off two DH girls.  Ultimately, Jess put together a great long drive from 400m out to hold on to the lead and become Region 9 Champion!  Alli held strong onto 4th place.  Rylee (11th) had her best race of the year, with only a wrong turn costing her a top 10 finish and maybe as high as 6th place.  Then the pack of Gracie (18th), Pyper (19th), Sylvia (20th), and Addi (21st) came in all strong together to secure 2nd place in the team race by a score of 29-49 to DH.  This was another positive step for this girls crew.  They have been very resilient all year and are starting to click at the right time.
The Varsity Boys race went out quick (low 4:40's first mile), but our crew ran a smart race and held back a little and began moving into position by the end of mile 1.  The lead pack of the Armstrong boys (Hurr), a CV runner, and Julien were closely followed by Nathan and then a large pack of Cedar, CV, Hurr, DH, and our guys.  As Julien took the lead and Nathan moved into fourth, our 3-5 scorers continued to get into good position.  At the finish, Julien and Nathan went 3-4, Scottie ran very well to move into 8th and medal and Cooper and Mikey battled hard to finish 11th and 13th.  Our 43 sec spread was the best in the meet.  Luke's 22nd place displaced every team's 5th runner (if not higher), and Boston's 27th was just 2 seconds off displacing every team's 5th.  This was enough to secure the win 40-50 over Hurricane and PV took home it's first Boys' Region 9 Championship since 2011.  Great job guys!  Not many people besides us thought this was possible at the beginning of the season.

State - We will be leaving at lunch on Tuesday, Oct. 16th and returning on the evening of the 17th.  Just a reminder to pay $25 (non-State racers) to help pay for the hotel.  That money needs to be paid to the PVHS finance office by Monday.

Phoenix - The $100 down payment for the Nike trip is due.  We have a few spots left.  This money will guarantee your spot for the trip.  The total cost will be around $175-$200 depending on our bus cost and the number of athletes who come (the more athletes, the lower the cost).  Please remember that all payments will be made to the PVXC club through Coach Holt and MUST be made in cash (no checks accepted).  The second payment will be due some time after State.

Weekly minutes can be found here.  Make sure you are caught up.  Our minute totals for the season officially end on Wednesday - so get any missing weeks and days caught up to earn your certificates at the banquet.

YOUNGSTERS - We have loved having you come out!  It has been so fun to get to know many new faces.  As your season is finishing up, just know that we are super excited for you to eventually join the HS team.  We will have our club start up again in the Spring for track season.

Thought of the Week: "Don't be afraid to give up the good to go from the great."
-Steve Prefontaine
Throughout the season, and for many of you, for years and years, we have talked about pushing to the limits, using a growth mindset, constantly striving to be your best, and on and on.  As we head into State, I about wrote, "Now is the time to show it all, to put all you've learned together."  And that is true, but this kind of has a sense of finality to it.  So then I thought about something else - "LIVE AND RUN GREATLY" and the Renegade Lifestyle.  Of course we want to do our very best at State this week, but this is just one more step in the journey.  It may feel different - a little more stressful and anxiety driven, a bit nervous, even a bit scary.  But really those are all emotions that we create for ourselves.  In reality, this is just another step in our journey to be our best self.  A journey that we have been working on for a very long time.  A journey that has included a lot of running.  A lot of hard work.  A lot of time and commitment.  A lot of ups and downs.  And it is all of these things that we can use to counter our fears and emotions (that we create) to realize IT REALLY IS JUST ANOTHER STEP TO LIVING AND RUNNING GREATLY.  Hopefully this rambling here makes sense.  We are so proud of this team... each and every one of you inspire us everyday with your hard work and growth, your ability to persevere, and your strength in overcoming hard things.  Let's go be great together!  XC4EVER!
