Sept. 26-Oct. 1 (Week 17)

We are actually getting down toward the end. After all these long runs, hard workouts, the heat, the early mornings, now we are getting to where it will all be worth it! Everyone take a minute and look at this short article about healthy eating... Please! It is critical that each of us strive to eat healthier - more proteins, more carbs, even some fats. We can't demand a lot from our bodies if we aren't putting a lot into them.

*NEXT YEAR HIGH ALTITUDE CAMP* JULY 17-20 AT JACOB LAKE - make your plans now.

Summer Moratorium will be June 28-July 4

Some other important announcements:

  • Please use this link to sign up for volunteering at the St. George Marathon this Saturday. It's a great way to give back to the sport and community that has done a lot for us. And we have a lot of fun! Family and friend invited to help as well. Register for Aid Station 22 (should have Trey's name as the captain).
  • Nike SW Regional (NXR) - this past week, we sent info home about the Nike race in Phoenix. We had 30 athletes respond - this will put the cost right about $170 for registration, hotel, and bus. If we can get that number above 40 we could see the price drop to $150-$160. Athletes, please let us know if you're interested.
  • Those interested in going to Foot Locker/Eastbay/Champs (whatever else it wants to be called) in California in December, we should start planning that a bit too. We are thinking maybe some parents would like to drive and we can take 15-20 kids who might want to go. Give us some feedback if you want to go (athletes) or may want to help drive/chaperone (parents).

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts. Continuing our Pre-Comp phase of training, we focus more on Race Pace work while still keeping some hill/strength aspects and our distance pretty high.

Race Report:
Hurricane Invite - A TOUGH course... need we say more. But it made it an experience! The girls ran strong from the front and pushed hard from their other positions. Ma'a led a near perfect PV score with the win. She was followed by Elle (2nd), Brianna (3rd), Katie (4th), and Brecken (8th). Everyone worked very hard, but Sarah and Olivia in particular had strong races. The boys were led by Kevin's 8th place finish. Dane, Gaige, and Liam hit the top 20. Grant continues to run well and Gianno had an awesome 2nd half of the race. That was a very solid effort by everyone on such a "unique" course. PV Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

Race Report:
Carson and Luke ran the challenging 6K course in Pocatello this weekend. Carson placed 21st overall while representing Weber St. and Luke placed 65th running for the BYU farm team.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Stop chasing outcomes. Chasing leads to worry, fear of failure, and trying to force your way towards success. It never works. (Instead) work your butt off at things that you enjoy the process of doing. The outcomes take care of themselves.
"
-Steve Magness
It is so easy to get stuck only focusing on the outcome we want (even good things like goals hope to achieve). Unfortunately, this often leads to a tunnel vision where the only success is reached when we achieve the desire outcome. In doing so, we miss the journey and the joy it can provide; we miss the opportunity to see our growth; we limit the joy in achieving various other things. This doesn't mean we can't strive to be our best, rather it means to let go of the idea that "this outcome is the only thing that matters" and remember that through growth we find joy and fulfillment.

Race Report:
Border Wars - This was our first trip to the Valley Regional Park, and we found a pretty good course. The cool weather and occasional light rain made a nice day for racing. Even with a full 5K and long grass, many of our athletes hit good times and we saw a lot of improvement from many. In the Senior race, the boys placed 6th: Dane was our top finisher in 27th followed by Boz, Gianno (who had one of his best races this year), Coleman, then Gary. The Junior boys took 5th: Evan led the way with a 30th place finish (and our best non-Varsity time of the day); he was followed in a tight pack by Grant, Carson, Kevin, and Parker (only 35 secs separated that scoring crew). The Varsity boys were next and ran a strong race to place 2nd: Bridger led the way with a strong 11th place finish; He was followed by Kyler, Talmage, Porter, and Keaton (whose spread between 2-5 was only 24 secs), then closely by Diego, then Gaige finished up in his first Varsity race. In the Championship race, Trey ran well and placed 13th. AJ was our lone Sophomore boy and had a strong run. Finally our Freshman boys continue to show a lot of growth with a nice 5th place finish: we were led by Liam who took 17th and ran a solid sub 19 time; Bender ran a gusty race and was our 2nd finisher, Ian was next, followed by Ben and Jake to round out our scoring. Tayson also ran a strong race, as well as Trevor, Gavin, Mason, Jeric, and Ferrell. A great thing that many teammates noticed during the race was the way that these Freshman boys responded to the coaching and yells put out by teammates and coaches for surges, competitive moves, and closing gaps. You could tell they really trusted those giving them advice to become better and were brave in their execution of it. On the girls side Amelia was our sole Senior girl representative to start the day. She was followed up by the Junior girls who placed 5th: Brianna was our top placer on the day with her 7th place finish in the race; she was followed by Brecken in 18th, then Laney, Alliana, and Elena. The Varsity girls ran in the Championship race placing 8th: Brooklyn led the was with an 18th place finish; Adri was our 2nd scorer, then Kate, Ma'a (who ran very well), Katie, Emmalee, and Elle. And our final girl racer of the day was Olivia in the Freshman race: she ran very well and has shown a ton of improvement over the year. PV Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

Alumni Report:
Julien Canales - Julien raced down at Riverside representing Utah Tech. He ran a solid race and placed around 5th-6th for the team.
Jessica Hill - Jess finally got to run her first collegiate XC race. She has been a great example of perseverance during hard times. Between injuries and Covid schedules, she is in her 3rd year at Weber and continued to do everything possible to get on the course. She ran an 18:20 on the 3 mile course in Montana and placed 6th for Weber.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Belief is not merely an idea the mind possesses. It is an idea that possess the mind.
"
-Robert Bolton
Hopefully you are seeing a trend here! Belief, Belief, BELIEF! Do you have something in your life that you have an unshakeable belief in? If so, that idea/thing should drive your every action and attention. All you do should be geared toward that thing. That's what "possess the mind" means. Belief isn't just a casual thought that you'd like to do something. When you truly believe, you commit full-heartedly to it. That's why beliefs are possible, because the change you, they direct you, they give you meaning. Then you go do everything imaginable to accomplish them.

Race Report:
Dixie All-Comers - aka the Furnace Race! Despite the merciless heat (high 112, race at 105+ just for the record), we did extremely well with a ton of improvement over our 2 mile time trial times from early August. Our Youngsters continue to do awesome and are looking great to carry on our tradition of excellence at PV. The boys started off the meet with a solid 3rd place finish. Gaige was our top finisher with a 7th place finish. Kevin continues to show a lot of growth with his 12th place finish. He was followed in 13th by Evan. Then we just had a ton of PV guys coming in: Boz 20th, Parker 21st, Gianno 25th, Liam 29th, Grant 31st, Jamin 35th, Ian 36th (and one of our biggest improvements on the day - over 2 mins faster than last month!), Jaxon 39th in his first race, AJ 41st, Carson 44th, Coleman 46th, Ben 47th, Gary 49th, Jake 50th... and on and on. Congrats guys; a lot of goals were set and accomplished as we ran strong together in the heat. The girls also placed 3rd and were led by Brianna taking home another win as she pulled away from the pack and controlled the race throughout! Brecken ran a solid race with a big improvement over the summer to take 5th. Next we had Alianna in 13th, then Amelia 44th, and Olivia 54th to round out our scoring. Sarah and Elena ran very well to finish 57th and 58th, and Bella rounded out the team in 69th place. PV Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

Alumni Report:
Julien Canales - J had a great summer loaded with tons of mileage (many of you saw a lot of his hard work as he came out and ran with the team this summer). In his first race of the season held at famous Buffalo Park in Flagstaff (home of NAU), Julien ran to a seventh place finish on the Utah Tech team. Look for J to continue to improve and push to the top of the UT pack!
Coach Jason - won the Cedar Half this weekend! Aight we see you Coach!

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"One factor that I've seen time and time again in those that made the jump from good to great is... Mentality/Belief. Being convinced that you're capable of being elite, and making the jump and believe you can reach your goals and working hard and smart to achieve them
"
-Isaac Wood (SLCC XC coach and former BYU asst.)
You may have noticed coaches bringing up this idea in the past week (and we will continue). It is really hard - even impossible - to accomplish something that you haven't seen yourself doing even in your dreams. YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE SOMETHING BEFORE YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH IT! Do you really believe you can break through and run with that teammate whose been up in front of you all year? Do you really believe you can take it to that next level and run Varsity? Do you really believe that sometime you could be a State Champ? Do you see yourself standing on that podium surrounded by your teammates having accomplished the ultimate goal of HS XC? Do you see yourself moving on to run in college, become pro, the Olympics, World Records? Who knows what that ceiling is; but if you've never envisioned yourself accomplish it, going out and doing it, then you've already created a limit for yourself. Dream big! Visualize it! And then get to work on achieving it! Every day... day in and day out!

Timpanogos Invite -  The Varsity girls and boys lined up against the best in the State this past weekend at Timpanogos. The girls placed 13th with Brook leading the way as the 37th scorer. Emmalee was 53rd. She was followed by Adri in 61st, Katie in 91st, Kate in 94th, then Elle in 105th and Ma'a in 111th. The boys followed up with a 21st place team finish. Trey led the way as 19th scorer. He was followed by Bridger in 111th, Porter 117th, Kyler 139th, Diego 148th, Keaton 153rd and Dane at 155th. Although this wasn't the worse race we've ever had, it wasn't our best this season and that is bound to happen. One of the most important things we can learn in life is how to handle the disappointments and grow from them then move on to keep reaching for our best. PV Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Only swimmers understand that the hardest part of the sport isn't the last 100 of a 400IM or the last 50 of a 200 fly, but it's convincing yourself day in and day out to jump into a freezing cold pool with your toes already curled over the edge at 6:00 AM.
"
-Kyle Sockwell
But we aren't swimmers! So let's say this... Only runners (in St. George) will understand that the hardest part of the sport isn't the last 200 of an all out 800 or trying to grind the middle mile of a beastly 5K XC course, but it's convincing yourself day in and day out to go to bed early, eat healthy, hydrate, set aside many other activities, go out and run in the 100+ (110!) degree heat, and wake up before 6:00a even when you wonder if it's all worth it."
-Me probably
You should all be proud of yourselves... you are amazing! Keep putting in work. It will be worth it.
