Nation Rankings

Our great showing at State propelled the boys back to lucky 13th in the nation on ESPNrise.

Boys State Results

STATE CHAMPIONS!
Congratulations on an amazing finish to our state season. The boys came into the State Championships as the favorite, but according to some by only a narrow margin. The Panthers left with no doubt who the best team in the state is beating Mt. View 38 to 74! The 1:21:18 cumulative time is a Panther record (for the 3rd straight year) breaking the old record by over 2 minutes - it is also the 10th fastest time ever in Utah and the 3rd fastest 4A time of all time!
Although the race started off slow, the PV harriers stuck right to the game plan and established a strong position early but waited until 2500 meters to make their move. In doing so, Trevor Thompson put 20 seconds on the chase pack. Coming around the pond the final time, Trevor had a very large lead - but just big enough to hold off the rest of the pack when the effects of his head cold and the heat really hit him the last 500 meters. No matter how it was done, Trevor was State Champ in 15:56! Tyson Boyer pulled out a killer kick and finished 2nd in 16:00, and Corey Kimzey became our 3rd All-Stater with his 8th place finish in 16:14. The race was truly won, however, by the performances of 4th and 5th men Devin Gillespie (14th 16:31) and Ryan Nielsen (15th 16:34) who gutted out great races after being buried at the start to finish just behind Mt. View's top 3. Rounding out the Panther runners was Michael Finch in 71st with a 17:37 and Dyllen Cafferty in 84th at 17:49. Congratulations guys - that is years and years of had work paying off!

Girls State Results

The Pine View Girls finished the season in fine fashion with a Top 10 finish at this year's 4A State Championships! Leading the Varsity 7 was Kaylee Boyer who finished in a new school record of 19:17.0! Kaylee ran a solid race and was right near the individual Top 10 throughout the entire race. Also breaking into the Panther All-Time Top 20 were Rachel Stone who place 33rd with a 20:21.3 and Jessica Peterson finishing just behind Rachel in 34th with a 20:21.7. Finishing the scoring for PV were Rachel Heinrich (101 22:34) and Liz Harrison (104 22:38). Senior Captain Sierra Worlton finished just behind Liz in 106th with a 22:39. And rounding out the Varsity 7 was Megan Frodsham with a 23:12 and 118th place finish.
The cumulative time of the ladies was 1:45:12 - our 3rd fastest finish ever at State! Overall a great way to end a great season!

The biggest way to change this is to email/call The Spectrum and ask for more coverage - so parents, family, friends get out there and do it.

BLACKOUT - Region Championships

After a lot of moving and debating, the Region 9 Championships(4A) were moved to Monday Oct. 11. This didn't seem to bother the Panthers as the Blackout was in full effect!
JV Girls got the team off to a fantastic start. Although the day was hot (90 degrees), the ladies pushed through and took 5 of the top 6 - and 8 of the top 9 - scoring a near perfect 16 to easily win the meet. Leading the pack was Madi Hansen with a 21:50. 2nd was Mia Hart in 22:02; 3rd MaKayla Baxter in 22:17; 4th was Kylee Becker in 23:52; and rounding out the scoring was Maree Wade who finished 6th in 24:04. Other top 10 finishers wwere Taylor Boyer (7th) and Chancie Johnson (8th).
The JV Boys ran well taking a clean sweep of the points and scoring a perfect 15 - in fact, the boys went 16 of the top 19 spots! Taking first was Michael Finch (16:46) who looks to be rounding back into form after his mid-season injury. Jared Ellsworth was 2nd in 16:58 (congrats on breaking 17!); 3rd was Timmy Lunt (17:22); 4th Morgan Wood (17:29); 5th Austin Manuele (17:51); and 6th was Wesley Plumb (18:06). Also finishing in the top 10 were Reed Burr (8th) - top Freshman in the Region! - and Robert Lusk (9th).
The race of the day was the Varsity Girls. Through two miles the race was all square between PV and SC, but valiant finishes by Jessica Peterson and Rachel Heinrich proved the 3 point difference as PV prevailed 27-30. Leading the race in dominating fashion was Kaylee Boyer who set a new course record (beating former PV standout Ruth Hilton by 2 seconds) in 18:20. JP finished 3rd outkicking a SC runner for a time of 19:57. 5th was Rachel Stone in 20:22. 8th was Rachel Heinrich in 20:50. And our final scorer was our Senior Captain Sierra Worlton who finished 10th in 21:08. Had it come down to a tie we would have still prevailed as Liz Harrison and Megan Frodsham both placed higher than the 6th SC runner finishing 12th and 13th in 21:24 and 21:27 respectively. This was one of the most exciting and gut-wrenching races I have witnessed. Both teams ran great and we are just so proud of the Pine View girls for earning their first region title since 2001!
The final race of the day - Varsity Boys - held little drama as our nationally ranked Panthers scored another perfect score victory (but not without some great efforts by two Dixie and one SC runners). Trevor Thompson just missed breaking the 15:00 mark recoding a 15:01 (but still breaking Snow Canyon great Hayden Hawk's record by 13 seconds). Corey Kimzey placed 2nd in 15:34, followed by Tyson Boyer in 15:44, Ryan Nielsen in 15:54, and Devin Gillespie in 16:04. This resulted in our 2nd best spread of the season - and on a day when Trevor truly had one of his best races of the year. Dyllen Cafferty made it into the top 10 finishing 9th in 16:50, followed by Casey Kimzey in 14th at 17:23.
What a great way to bring the Region season to a close. Everyone ran so well - and you all deserved it after working so hard all season.
Next stop... STATE!

Michigan 10/7

Congrats to Ryan Nielsen for hitting the A Standard on the 2 set Michigan and earning his new laces. Trevor and Tyson also hit the standard for each section of the Michigan - a first. Good work guys.

September Athletes of the Month

Corey Kimzey and Liz Harrison are our PVXC Athletes of the Month for September 2010. Both Corey and Liz have played an important role in our teams success throughout the year.
A Junior, Liz has been one of our Athletes of the Week this season and has really improved throughout the year. Liz has a great attitude and has really pushed herself to become not only a Varsity runner, but a point scorer as well. How she runs at Region will play a huge role in our success, as she has not only developed herself into a strong runner, but pushed those around her as well.
Corey will reach a remarkable feat this season as he will become the only runner in Panther history to run every race as a Varsity runner! Every other PVXC great has had a race or two at JV - but not Corey. Obviously, Corey has played a crucial role in the development of our team to a Region power, State power, and now National power! Corey, although we won't say goodbye just yet, you will greatly be missed by everyone around you - good luck at the next level.

Athletes of the Week - Oct. 11

As we close in on Region and near the end of the season, we award Athletes of the Week for Oct. 11 to Jared Ellsworth and Liz Lunt.
Liz, a Freshman, had the biggest improvement of any runner between the Aug. 17th and Oct. 6th Time Trials - an improvement of 10:07! Liz has worked very hard all season and is a great example of what you can do by coming to practice and giving it your all every time.
Ells looks to move into a Varsity spot next year as a Senior and has taken a few very important steps throughout the season. The most important of these has been coming to practice consistently and letting the workouts get him better and better as he gets in shape. His 11:24 at the Time Trail was over 1:30 minutes better than earlier this year and he placed top among JV runners. He leads a strong JV team that looks to black-out the JV Region race today.
Nice work this season Liz and Jared!

PV Team Time Trial #2

With Snow Canyon Invite being canceled, we improvised and held a time trial on our 2 mile course on Weds. 10/6. A couple good things actually came of this: 1) We were able to get out and still do some hard running; 2) Only racing 2 miles keeps the legs a little fresher for Region (especially since it turns out that Region got moved to Monday the 11th; 3)and finally, this is the same course we raced on the 17th of Aug. and we got to see MAJOR improvements across the board!
With the top 5 boys not planning on racing SC anyway, they didn't run the time trial, neither did Kaylee as she hit a separate workout. Others:
Liz Harrison solidified her Varsity spot for Region with a very solid 14:18 (22:01 State equiv. and 2 1/2 minutes PR on the course). Running strong with Liz were Sierra Worlton (14:21, looking strong to come back after injury) and Megan Frodsham (14:24). Gaining ground - as she has all season - was Mia Hart coming in at 14:26 and making a serious bid for the Varsity team at State after she runs well at Region. Also strong in the second pack was MaKayla Baxter (14:30) and Madisson Hanson (14:38). The biggest improvements throughout the season can be awarded to Taylor Boyer who improved nearly 5 1/2 minutes and Liz Lunt who had a remarkable improvement of 10 minutes!
The boys were paced by Dyllen Cafferty who hit a very strong 11:08 (4th fastest time of the year on this course and a 17:08 State equiv.) and Casey Kimzey's 11:14 - both are looking solid for the 6th and 7th Varsity spots. The JV crew also ran very strong as they look to bring another blackout to the Region JV race: Jared Ellsworth (11:24), Wesley Plumb (11:34), Michael Finch (11:37), Morgan Wood (11:45), Tim Lunt (11:52), and Austin Manuele (11:53) all broke the 12 minute barrier. The big movers on the boys' side were Byron Warby and Colton Bowler. Both Freshmen improved in the 1:45 range.

Trevor Thompson - National Top 50!

Congrats to Trevor - He has recently made the Honorable Mention list of ESPNrise.com's elite top 25 boys. After the top 25, the honorable mention are listed alphabetically - so check out Trevor toward the bottom of the list. This is an absolutely amazing honor especially when you think about how a Top 50 national athlete would be received in other sports (not to name names!). Having Trevor helping lead our team on and off the course is awesome. It has been great to work with Trev for the last 4 years and to see him overcome all he has to become the great young man he is has really been a joy (most of the time!). When Trevor showed up for his first practice in jeans and burned up most of the team as a Freshman, I told Coach Cappy that this kid was going to be the best runner we've ever seen at Pine View. Thanks for not making me a liar! - Congrats Trev, you deserve it!

Athletes of the Week - Oct. 4

Morgan Wood and MaKayla Baxter are our PVXC Athletes of the Week.
Morgan (Sr.) is in his first year of running with our team. During this season he has established himself as one of the top JV runners on the team. He has an excellent attitude and work ethic and we continually remind him of how mad we are that he didn't run before. But we love you anyway Morgan and are glad to have you with us!
MaKayla (Soph.) is also in her first year of running. She too has developed into a very strong runner and this past week found herself bumped into the Varsity line-up for the first time. She ran extremely well at Cedar (placing 6th on the team) and has a great future with the team.
Great job Morgan and MaKayla you both exemplify what PVXC is all about!

Cedar Invite 10/1

Our final invitational of the year turned out to be the best all-around meet our team has run this season.
JV Girls started us off very well on the 2.95 mile course. Even with 2 runners moving up to Varsity because of injuries, the girls finished 4th out of the 12 scoring teams. Leading the girls was Mia Hart with her spectacular 6th place finish in 21:41 (a time that would have placed in our 5th Varsity spot!). Also running very well were Madi Hansen finishing 10th in 22:07 and Chancie Johnson finishing 16th in 23:11.
The JV Boys were challenged by Coach Holt in the past weeks to step up and continue the standards set by previous years' teams and the Varsity. This week, they responded to the call. Scoring 28 points and winning by 60 over Desert Hills and 71 over Cedar, the Panthers dominated the race. Michael Finch finishes 2nd overall and seems to be getting some of his legs back from injury. Jared Ellsworth finished 4th after holding 2nd most of the race, followed by Wesley Plumb in 6th, Morgan Wood in 7th, Timmy Lunt in 9th, and Robert Lusk in 10th.
Kaylee Boyer (6th in 18:16/19:18 State equivalent) paced the Varsity Girls to a solid 7th place finish while missing 2 runners. Most impressive in the race was MaKayla Baxter finishing 6th on the team in her Varsity debut.
The Varsity Boys, racing for the final time before Region, also ran well. The top three were held back by Coach for about 1 1/2 miles before unleashing amazing final pushes to get a team victory. Trevor Thompson finished 1st in 15:02(15:38 State equivalent), Tyson Boyer was 2nd in 15:16, and Corey Kimzey 3rd in 15:22. Ryan Nielsen rounded out the top 10 with a 15:55 finish and Devin Gillespie placed 16th in 16:11 to finish the team scoring (PV 28, Canyon View 105, Kearns 137, DH 140, Cedar 145 - 13 teams total)
