Sept. 25-30 (Week 17)

It's crazy that we are at the end of September. It's been a great journey, and there is more to enjoy, but we want each of you to take a minute and look back at where you've come from this year (and even years past). Hopefully in this reflection you see great growth and a lot of good memories.

Also, if you haven't had a chance to look at the post from mid-week last week about the post-season races, please go back and read over it with your parents and discuss what your plans will be. This is to help us get things planned and we need pretty accurate numbers to plan transportation and hotels and stuff. Not that this is a full commitment, but please take a look.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for this week's workouts. We continue in our Competition Phase where we want to give everyone a chance to really have great races. Although we still need to keep our aerobic engines strong, we don't focus as much on the long run; instead we continue growth of race pace (and touch on sub race pace) development.

Race Report:
Dual w/ DH - We haven't had time to type of the results yet, but we'll blame that on the lightning from Wednesday. Nevertheless, we had some very good races over the two days. On Wednesday, the Youngsters started us off very well and showed off some future Panthers. Then the girls were able to start, but not fully finish their race. Alianna ran very well and won the shortened version of the race. Bouncing back on Thursday, she ran well again and placed 4th. The boys had a strong showing with Gaige taking the win, followed by Jake and then a whole crew of Panthers (that I can't remember the order to because the results are in my classroom!)

TwiKnight - 2023 results. This was our first trip up to TwiKnight, and it was a fun meet with great competition. Carter (9th), Liam (12th), and Ben (31st) got us started off well in the Fr/So race. Grant did well in the Jr/Sr race placing 26th. In the Varsity girls' race, Kate and Emmalee led us with a 7th place finish taking 20th and 21st. Elle, Katie, Brecken, and Vanessa all finished between 40th and 50th and we had our tightest 1-5 spread on the year. The boys also had a tighter spread (40 secs. 1-5, and 49 1-6) than we've had throughout the season in taking 8th. Bridger was our top runner in 35th, followed by Talmage, Porter, Kyler, Bender, and Trevor.

Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder: Brianna, Sr. She has a great attitude and really works on building everyone around her, while at the same time pushing herself to the Varsity level.
Tough at Practice: Joseph, So. In his first year of running, has really been pushing himself at practice and grown a lot throughout the year.
Performance of the Week: Bender, So. After building on an excellent track season, has really grown into a solid Varsity scorer this season.

Youngsters Info:
Practice held at PVHS at 3:00p Mondays and Thursdays for 6th-8th graders. Youth race Wednesday at Cedar HS 3:30p. Coach needs to know for sure who is going to race on Monday at practice (no day of race registration)

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Having a purpose is incredibly powerful. My dog goes on runs. In the Texas heat, he gets tired and slows down, trotting along looking like he's all out of energy. Then he sees a squirrel... and takes off in a dead sprint... If it matters to you, you'll find the energy."
-Steve Magness
This is a great way to think of things. When the dog has energy for the squirrel, if a kid has the energy to sprint past the cheering team, if a struggling runner finally finds the energy for a final kick, it shows that THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING IN THERE! You just have to want whatever the goal is enough to dig it out. When coaches and teammates and family are all cheering you on and believing in you, use it to believe in yourself and go get that goal you want or those runners up ahead for the team. In the words of a team motto from a few years back, "How bad do you want it?".

XC Post-season meets

Please fill out this form for XC post-season meets

Each year PVXC Club takes trips to some post-season meets. The purpose of this is to help bridge the gap between XC season and track season (with the goal of encouraging all our athletes to participate in track and keep building season upon season and year upon year). These meets are also an opportunity for our team to continue to build bonds and progress toward our team and individual goals.

Sept. 18-23 (Week 16)

We had another great week of PVXC. Much of the team traveled up to PreState on Weds and did very well. Then we ended the week with some very good workouts to set us up for a strong push into our championship season in the next few weeks. We are getting pretty close to the end of our regular season, so like we talked about on Thoughtful Thursday, now is a great time to be doing things just a little better... with Purpose!

Although we still need to keep our aerobic engines strong, we don't focus as much on the long run; instead we continue growth of race pace (and touch on sub race pace) development.

Race Report:
PreState - 2023 results. We had great weather, a little cooler with some cloud cover, and it was great to be on the State course. The races were divided into grades (Fr/So and Jr/Sr), so we were able to work on a few different things individually and as a team. In the Fr/So races the girls placed 11th and the boys 2nd (just 3 points off a powerhouse Herriman team). Emmalee led the way with a 2nd place finish and Sariah had a strong race placing 40th. Bender led the boys with a 6th place finish, then Trevor 12th, Liam 25th, and Carter and Ben 27th and 28th. The Jr/Sr boys ran very well and took 4th behind some nationally ranked programs. Bridger and Talmage ran very well and took 7th and 8th, Porter 20th, and Kyler 22nd. The girls took the win (and were 2nd in the full meet merge behind national top 15 team American Fork). Leading the way was a strong duo of Kate in 3rd and Brecken in 5th, followed by Elle in 11th, Katie 21st, and Brianna 26th.

Alumni Report:
Julien and Keaton raced for Utah Tech down at the UC Riverside invite in Riverside, Ca, this weekend. Julien ran the 8K course in 25:28 and placed 3rd for the TrailBlazers and Keaton ran a time of 27:12.

Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder: Evan, Sr. Has a great attitude and has really committed to helping the team through his efforts and bringing out the best in his teammates.
Tough at Practice: Kyler, Sr. Has developed into a great leader and really pulls the team together in workouts.
Performance of the Week: Laura, Fr. Has shown a lot of growth in her racing throughout the season. She's got a great future ahead of her.

Youngsters Info:

Youth race Wednesday at the same location as the HS on the west side of the airport 6:00p, be there early for registration and warm up. Also, uniforms can be picked up Monday at the beginning of practice in Coach Holt's classroom. There is a $10 option for lightly used and a $20 option for new.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Observation: the people who sustain success over the long-haul are rarely shooting for success. They are focused on the path. Their goal is mastery, which knows no end."
-Steve Magness
This is a great quote that not only goes along with what we talked about on Thoughtful Thursday, but goes along with our team motto this year of "Building the Legacy". The Legacy is all about your journey and the journey of our program. When we are continually seeking to do our best through mastery of even the seemingly simple skill (seeking a purpose in all things) we will have continued growth throughout our journey.

Dixie All-Comers - 2023 results. It was nice to not have it 110 degrees this year, but it's still always a bit hot at BHNP. The teams did great. The Cuties (Youngsters!) got us off to a great start with some very solid racing. Then the girls ran. Our top finisher was Sariah in 17th. Cassie had a great race, and Laura continues to show a lot of growth and improvement as they finished as our 2nd and 3rd runners. The boys ran really well and took third (behind Hurr and Crimson varsity). Liam led the way with an 8th place finish and Gaige was 10th. We also had strong races from the Freshman crew as they keep improving and growing.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"For a sprinter the thrill is going fast, but for a distance runner it is the journey in between the start and the end."
-unknown
A student was asking me about XC and why we run, and the answer I gave was a lot like this thought. Distance running is a very interesting thing - in that it hurts, its hot, in a way kinda crappy. But what is so great is to be part of this great journey. As a coach, it is watching each of you grow and overcome trials and adversity. To see you become better runners, teammates, and people. It's about all that. I don't know a lot of things we do in life that encompass all of those important aspects as well as distance running does. What a great thing. I just love it!

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"The only way you can find out how good you are is by giving yourself a chance. Most of us excuse, rationalize, or give up before we've even given ourselves a shot. Put yourself in position to do something. Don't obsess over whether it'll work out or not. Be there first."
-Steve Magness
One of the things we've tried to build this team on is guts - being brave, putting yourself into a position to do great things. So often it seems that people never even reach the surface of the great things they can do because of barriers they place on themselves. Get out and give yourself a chance to be amazing. Give it a try. An example: we were super proud of Jake at SUU. He went out strong and led through the first part of the race. To do that, he had to set aside fears of dying out or not finishing strong and he just went for it. And although he didn't finish first, he learned a ton about himself and what he can do when he goes for it. These are things that are going to pay off for him big time as he works toward soon being a varsity runner, and then a scorer, and then a guy who is competing for titles and beyond. So be like Jake! Be brave and get out of your own way!
