Good job to those that either were around throughout the week at practice or got your runs in while you were off somewhere else. The importance of the CONSISTENCY of running at least each weekday cannot be understated at this time of year. Thanks to those who were able to help with flags as well.

Those who are just joining us or looking into PVXC, go back to Week 1 and check out info for the Parent/Athlete info slides (which includes info about our communications on Binderly, registration for the year, physicals, etc.), as well as videos for our pre-post work drills, weights, and more.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for a link to this week's workouts. We really saw the importance of TEAM at the end of the week while so many of you were gone. We missed you! And it just isn't quite the same without everyone around. Notice that we start adding doubles this week (a double is two runs in a day). There are two purposes of a double: one (which isn't super important for us right now, but as we go on helps us develop more) is getting a few more miles in each week; the second is the most important for us - getting out in the heat. Eventually a lot of what we do will be in the heat after school, so we need to start building up some acclimation a little at a time. Here's a good little article about how to run safely in the heat, please read it. And if you want to get a little more in-depth about it, here's another article. Please be safe... slow down, be hydrated before and after, plan a route that you can stop and get help/safety if needed, run with someone so you can look out for each other. Use the Weekly Minutes form to go enter the number of days you ran and your total minutes from this past week (Week 3) - remember our goal of 55 days of running throughout the summer.

This Week's Schedule: bring water and a towel each day (for stretches and drills on grass)
Monday: 7:00a at Washington Elementary (Everyone) - Youth Summer Running Club 8:30-9:45 (everyone plan on staying and helping out)
Tuesday: 6:30a at Washington Elementary (Everyone) / Weights and plyos at PVHS right after practice / PM on own (White, Black, Silver: expected; Maroon: optional; Beginners: no)
Wednesday: 7:00a at Washington Elem, Book Club, and Waffle Wednesday! (Everyone and bring a friend!)
Thursday: 7:00a at Washington Elem. (Everyone) / Weights and plyos at PVHS right after practice / PM on own (White, Black, Silver: expected; Maroon: optional; Beginners: no)
Friday: 7:00a at Highland Park (Everyone)
Saturday: 7:00a at Sunrise Park (Everyone)

Book Club Reading: Please read through this article; take notes on ideas that seem useful and important; and on Wednesday we will be talking about it. This week's article: You've Got to Believe another great article chosen by our captains with ideas they think will help each of you and our team get better and better.

Upcoming Events:
  • OPENING SOCIAL! BRING A FRIEND... Time and date TBA
  • Waffle Wednesdays - ongoing after each Wednesday am practice.
  • High Altitude Camp - July 13th-16th in Beaver. Cost is $100. We will need to get this planned and figured out who is going, parents driving (staying for all or part). This is a VERY worthwhile event to be a part of... everyone on the team should make it a priority to join us. Those who are new, talk to your teammates about camp and see why you should plan on being there too. Please take a minute and fill out the following form for participation. ***Any late registration and Payment MUST be done this week.*** Those coming to camp MUST be running! You have to be able to complete a full week at the Maroon Level of workouts before coming to camp. Rides: We are so grateful for the parents who have volunteered to drive us up and back from camp. Right now, we have more than enough rides up, but we need more rides back. If you could switch, shoot Coach a message on Binderly.
PVXC Thought of the Week: "A great team is built when every person decides the mission matters more than their own moment."
-Mark Messier (hockey great and multiple time Stanley Cup Champion)
Even growing up a desert rat, I really enjoy hockey. And Messier was one of the greatest players of all-time during the time I was growing up, so when I came across this quote, I really wanted to share it with our team. As an athlete for many years and a coach for nearly 30, I have been around teams nearly my entire life, and something that has held unequivocally true in all my experiences is that building a great team is a very, very difficult thing to do. It never just happens. It isn't luck. And it isn't done by just a few people. Now a "great" team probably means something different every year, but to me it is a group that comes together to accomplish something much bigger than the individual; in fact, much greater than a simple sum of their parts. In our team mission statement, we say that "PVXC LIVES AND RUNS GREATLY". This is what a great team does - comes together to be the best they all can in all aspects of their life that are important to them. The key to this is the buy-in of EVERY person associated with the team (athletes, coaches, parents, friends, and others). Sadly, I have seen unbelievably talented individuals who had a difficult time with the idea that the whole mattered more than themselves; unfortunately, any time that this has happened the team has suffered and so has the individual. However, I've also had the privilege to be around teams where everyone truly did come together. Amazingly, not only did these teams become something great, almost always each individual accomplished so much more than they would have ever done alone. TEAM... that's where it's at. Whatever your role is with this TEAM, are you all in as we strive to become great?!

Athletes of the Week:
Benji, Junior - bringing great energy and leadership to the team.
Rylee, Sophomore - has such a great attitude and is a great example of reaching out to everyone and being a leader even if you're not a captain.
Sebastian, Sophomore - has been really pushing in practice and stepping up the level of his workouts.

June 15 - 20 (Week 3) *UPDATED for end of the week*

*We will be changing the plans for the end of the week. On Saturday: we will not be meeting as a team; instead, form your own groups and get a mid-distance run in (don't go too long, maybe about 5 minutes off of your first long run this year).*

(Those who are looking for info about our Youth Summer Running Club for grades K-8, click here and you'll find the info you need)

We're hoping that those who have shown some Consistency are starting to feel the affects and noticing that you are improving. Take a look back at where you started even just a couple weeks ago and see how much better you are already doing. Maybe it is fewer walking breaks, an increase of minutes, or running a little faster... When you are putting in Consistent effort, you will improve - guaranteed!

Maybe our biggest goal should be Be To Practice... We always will support you in your summer adventures, but a bit of focus has to be placed on practice, too. When you're in town, be to practice (and try and actually be in town sometimes). When you're out of town, get something in! Consistency is key. Use the Weekly Minutes form to go enter the number of days you ran and your total minutes from this past week (Week 2) - remember our goal of 55 days of running throughout the summer.

PVXC Thought of the Week: "You don't get results by focusing on results. You get results by focusing on the habits and behaviors that produce results."
-bechampionminded (Insta)
As we start working on goals (in any area), we often look to a result as proof of accomplishing something: take top 20 at State, make Varsity, run my first 5 miler, or whatever. When you look those who accomplish these goals, you realize that it isn't just setting a goal of hitting that final product that got them their. No, it was the process. If you want to set a State Record then focus on the habits that a State Record holder would do. Want to make Varsity? Want to run for 45 minutes? Want to break 20 minutes in a XC race? Want to be a better friend? Want to be happier? Then develop the habits that take you to these things with Consistency!

Athletes of the Week: (sorry I can't remember who was which, but you're all awesome!)
Ginger, Freshman, doing great in her first year out running.
Hudson, Sophomore, really pushing and pushing the gap with the upper guys.
Marcus, Freshman, another first year runner who is bringing a great attitude and hard work ethic to the team.

That was a great Week 1. A lot of new faces and some good running. We're excited to see how this TEAM grows and develops over the course of our season. Keep coming out and working on your consistency. And of course, it is not too late to grab a friend and bring in a new member of our TEAM.

We have a lot of intro stuff posted back on Week 1, so go back there and check out info for the Parent/Athlete info slides (which includes info about our communications on Binderly, registration for the year, physicals, etc.), as well as videos for our pre-post work drills, and more.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for a link to this week's workouts. We'll continue to build our aerobic engine as we help everyone grow their base as well as work on a few workouts that build our base. The most important thing about this week is the continued consistency. It doesn't do a whole lot of good to run once or twice and then take the rest of the week off (or multiple weeks off). Let's get out to practice with the TEAM. And if you're gone, try and get something in - something is always better than nothing. Use the Weekly Minutes form to go enter the number of days you ran and your total minutes from this past week (Week 1) - remember our goal of 55 days of running throughout the summer.

Thursday: 7:00a at Washington Elem. (Everyone) / Weights and plyos at PVHS right after practice
Friday: 7:00a at Sullivan Park (Everyone)
Saturday: 7:00a at Crosby Family Confluence Park (by the Dixie Center)(Everyone)

Book Club Reading: Our first article we will discus will be Wednesday (so please read if you haven't yet): If You Want to Get Better, Get Comfortable Saying... by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness. If you've been around before, you know that these two have a big influence on our philosophy here at PVXC. Please read through this article; take notes on ideas that seem useful and important; and on Wednesday we will be talking about it. Next week's article: Billy Mills Olympic Flashback: The Greatest Upset.

PVXC Thought of the Week: "Elite performers don't see it as a sacrifice."
-Steve Magness
When talking about of to become "elite", Magness gave this quote. He continued, "They don't see going to be early, skipping the party, or putting in hours of practice as something they are giving up. They're living in alignment with what they care about most." First, let's put a new definition on "elite". We've been taught that elite means only the best of the best, and because of this only a few can achieve this status. However, elite really means overcoming and becoming your best self. Now, reality is that true ever achieve this definition as well, but notice it has nothing to do with winning or setting records - it has everything to do with becoming your best self. And with that definition, becoming elite is open to everyone. And what he says about sacrifice is a core principle for our TEAM. Sacrifice feels like I have to be giving up something. But in reality, when I head out early so I can get to be and get up on time to practice, of when I stay on top of my school work instead of hanging with friends, or I make my closest group those that have the same end goals as me instead of surrounding myself with a group that doesn't care, I'm not giving something up. What I'm doing is allowing my life to line up with accomplishing what I care about most. I'm not sacrificing a social life, I'm allowing myself to become elite at something I really care about. For those that have been around our TEAM, there are probably a few recent examples that you can thing of that fit both sides of this. Which of those examples do you want to follow and become like?
