Good job to those that either were around throughout the week at practice or got your runs in while you were off somewhere else. The importance of the CONSISTENCY of running at least each weekday cannot be understated at this time of year. Thanks to those who were able to help with flags as well.

Those who are just joining us or looking into PVXC, go back to Week 1 and check out info for the Parent/Athlete info slides (which includes info about our communications on Binderly, registration for the year, physicals, etc.), as well as videos for our pre-post work drills, weights, and more.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: Click here for a link to this week's workouts. We really saw the importance of TEAM at the end of the week while so many of you were gone. We missed you! And it just isn't quite the same without everyone around. Notice that we start adding doubles this week (a double is two runs in a day). There are two purposes of a double: one (which isn't super important for us right now, but as we go on helps us develop more) is getting a few more miles in each week; the second is the most important for us - getting out in the heat. Eventually a lot of what we do will be in the heat after school, so we need to start building up some acclimation a little at a time. Here's a good little article about how to run safely in the heat, please read it. And if you want to get a little more in-depth about it, here's another article. Please be safe... slow down, be hydrated before and after, plan a route that you can stop and get help/safety if needed, run with someone so you can look out for each other. Use the Weekly Minutes form to go enter the number of days you ran and your total minutes from this past week (Week 3) - remember our goal of 55 days of running throughout the summer.

This Week's Schedule: bring water and a towel each day (for stretches and drills on grass)

Book Club Reading: Please read through this article; take notes on ideas that seem useful and important; and on Wednesday we will be talking about it. This week's article: You've Got to Believe another great article chosen by our captains with ideas they think will help each of you and our team get better and better.

Upcoming Events:
  • OPENING SOCIAL! BRING A FRIEND... Time and date TBA
  • Waffle Wednesdays - ongoing after each Wednesday am practice.
  • High Altitude Camp - July 13th-16th in Beaver. Cost is $100. We will need to get this planned and figured out who is going, parents driving (staying for all or part). This is a VERY worthwhile event to be a part of... everyone on the team should make it a priority to join us. Those who are new, talk to your teammates about camp and see why you should plan on being there too. Please take a minute and fill out the following form for participation. ***Any late registration and Payment MUST be done this week.*** Those coming to camp MUST be running! You have to be able to complete a full week at the Maroon Level of workouts before coming to camp. Rides: We are so grateful for the parents who have volunteered to drive us up and back from camp. Right now, we have more than enough rides up, but we need more rides back. If you could switch, shoot Coach a message on Binderly.
PVXC Thought of the Week: "A great team is built when every person decides the mission matters more than their own moment."
-Mark Messier (hockey great and multiple time Stanley Cup Champion)
Even growing up a desert rat, I really enjoy hockey. And Messier was one of the greatest players of all-time during the time I was growing up, so when I came across this quote, I really wanted to share it with our team. As an athlete for many years and a coach for nearly 30, I have been around teams nearly my entire life, and something that has held unequivocally true in all my experiences is that building a great team is a very, very difficult thing to do. It never just happens. It isn't luck. And it isn't done by just a few people. Now a "great" team probably means something different every year, but to me it is a group that comes together to accomplish something much bigger than the individual; in fact, much greater than a simple sum of their parts. In our team mission statement, we say that "PVXC LIVES AND RUNS GREATLY". This is what a great team does - comes together to be the best they all can in all aspects of their life that are important to them. The key to this is the buy-in of EVERY person associated with the team (athletes, coaches, parents, friends, and others). Sadly, I have seen unbelievably talented individuals who had a difficult time with the idea that the whole mattered more than themselves; unfortunately, any time that this has happened the team has suffered and so has the individual. However, I've also had the privilege to be around teams where everyone truly did come together. Amazingly, not only did these teams become something great, almost always each individual accomplished so much more than they would have ever done alone. TEAM... that's where it's at. Whatever your role is with this TEAM, are you all in as we strive to become great?!

Athletes of the Week:
Benji, Junior - bringing great energy and leadership to the team.
Rylee, Sophomore - has such a great attitude and is a great example of reaching out to everyone and being a leader even if you're not a captain.
Sebastian, Sophomore - has been really pushing in practice and stepping up the level of his workouts.
