2022 XC Season

We had a tremendous XC season. Thanks so much to all of you who helped in any way: parents, PV, bus drivers, our Youngsters crew (especially Coach Martha), coaches, and most of all - you athletes; thank you for letting us coach you and for being an amazing part of our lives.

Two Week Break: for your break, remember, 2 weeks. Be active during this time: lift, walk, bike, yoga, whatever. No running the first week. If you feel ready to, during the second week, you can do a few 20 minute runs.

When Break is Over: Those who have already hit their break and are ready to get back running, you can come out to the track after school and we'll organize some runs together to get going. Everyone else, we will start up together on December 19th. THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO INVITE FREINDS AND OTHERS OUT TO JOIN US! We will all be starting new, and so it isn't as scary for someone to start up when we are all going a bit shorter. So I challenge everyone of you to get 1 new person out... Sophomores and Freshmen - you have to get 2 new people out! You are the heart of our future team; we need more 9th and 10th graders.

Running Over the Holiday Break: It is real important to run over the break. Runs will be posted at pvtrack.blogspot. This time is like the summer is to XC. Maybe you might miss a day or have to change the planned run because you're out of town or something, but remember... CONSISTENCY IS KEY! When we get back from the break, we will be doing a time trial to help set our workout paces - so you want to be in decent shape by doing the prescribed runs, strides, and post-run work.

Nike Southwest: We had a great club trip down to Phoenix for Nike. A lot of great racing, fun times on the bus, and just being around our teammates. Check out the results here.

Champs West: About 20 athletes headed down to Southern California for the Champs West Regional. It was a great race, and probably the best PV has ever done down there as a whole. With about half our team, we had 13 or so medalists and Brook and Trey were some of our highest placing individuals in program history.

NOW IT'S TRACK TIME: So we've brought up the idea of the importance of running track. It really is a big deal to connect the seasons. So hopefully everyone decides to join us and bring some friends. Those who are in a winter sport, try to keep getting in a little run here and there just to keep the body connected to the skills of running (but hopefully your sport is keeping you in decent shape and then you can really ramp up the running when your season ends).

As we transition to track, we'll be using the track blog found at the link above. So go there for some winter info.

Nov. 14-19 (Week 24)

For some of you this will be your last week with us for a little while; others might have a couple more weeks until the break. So, *REMEMBER, YOU MUST BE AT PRACTICE TO BE ELEGIBLE TO COME ON THE POST SEASON TRIPS*.

Since we are finishing up the season, here's a rundown of what is going on: At the end of the season, we will take a 2 week break - during that break, it is encouraged that you stay active (do SAMS and core, bike, cross train, lift, get outside and do some things) - but during the first week off, NO RUNNING! Let the body heal up and the mind have a break (basically we want you to miss running a bit). During the 2nd off week, continue to keep active, and if you want to throw in a short 20 min run every other day (3 times) go ahead. But if you aren't ready to run yet, don't. Nevertheless, it is important that you're staying active and doing some things during this time. This will all be self/athlete led, no coaches for these two weeks (you need a break from us, and I hear we might need a break from you!). After the two week break, we'll get going again and building back toward track (for those not in a winter sport).

We'll keep this here one more week in case you missed it: A message for parents - As we are maybe starting to think about presents at this time of year, here's a few ideas for the runner in your home: shoes, shoes, and more shoes (the one piece of gear a runner must have is shoes, and now is a great time to get a new pair and double it up as a present!); a watch (a decent gps watch can range from $100 or less to quite a bit more, but really you don't need anything super fancy); recovery aids like foam rollers, rolling sticks, and massage tools; a book about running or sports psychology can be an interesting read.

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts

Race Report:
Great job at the Autumn Classic. The girls ran a very strong team race and most were able to find teammates to pack with throughout. Brook led 5 Panthers under 12 minutes with her 11:33 win. She was followed by Kate, Katie, Adri, and Emmalee. Brianna and Alianna set new PRs and Laney was just off hers. While Elena and Bella ran great efforts for their first 3200s on the track. The guys saw a lot of great races throughout the order. The younger guys showed a lot of strength for their first 3200 on the track. And we place 12 boys under 11:00 (while missing a couple top runners). Trey led the way with another spectacular race finishing first in school record fashion with a time of 9:19 (splits were 4:45 and 4:34!). He was followed by Porter, Talmage, and Kyler; then a big group of Keaton, Cane, Jamin, Evan, Kevin, Boz, Parker, Grant, and Gaige. Fast 3200s show the importance of XC strength and mileage to fast track times. Check out athletic.net for results.

Alumni Update:
Jess ran at Mountain Regional XC Championships on Friday. She finished as 3rd scorer for Weber and 79th overall. Great season Jessica!

Upcoming Events:

PVXC Thought of the Week:

-Dumbflotrack
What does that have to do with anything? Nothing really! You guys are all just awesome. It has been such a fun year. Athletes: thanks for all your hard work, your commitment to each other and the team, for truly caring about each other, for teaching yourself that you can do difficult things and overcome trials, and for being an inspiration to all of us. Parents: thanks for your support of all this craziness; of course you love you kids and want them to do great, but sometimes it is difficult to see your kids go through tough stuff - the lessons you are letting them learn here in XC are going to help them grow in every aspect of their lives. All of you: you really are awesome!

Nov. 7-12 (Week 23)

Last couple weeks before Nike! *REMEMBER, YOU MUST BE AT PRACTICE TO BE ELEGIBLE TO COME WITH US*. We missed a lot of people of Friday morning. That's not good!

A message for parents - As we are maybe starting to think about presents at this time of year, here's a few ideas for the runner in your home: shoes, shoes, and more shoes (the one piece of gear a runner must have is shoes, and now is a great time to get a new pair and double it up as a present!); a watch (a decent gps watch can range from $100 or less to quite a bit more, but really you don't need anything super fancy); recovery aids like foam rollers, rolling sticks, and massage tools; a book about running or sports psychology can be an interesting read.

A message for athletes - SLEEP! Take advantage of the time change to get more sleep. This is a great time to move your bed time earlier. When you start to get tired at your "old" bed time, go to sleep, don't wait until the clock tells you to go to bed. So if I am usually going to bed at around 10:30, now I'll feel tired at 9:30; use it and go to sleep then and start the positive habit of a better sleep time.

*NEXT YEAR HIGH ALTITUDE CAMP* JULY 17-20 AT JACOB LAKE - make your plans now.

Summer Moratorium will be June 28-July 4

Some other important announcements:

  • Those interested in going to Foot Locker/Eastbay/Champs (whatever else it wants to be called) in California on December 3, we are going to have a meeting in Holt's room at lunch on Monday. Come prepared to talk about hotels/driving (know if your parent could drive and # of spots)/activities/etc... MSers make sure you let us know if you are interested so we can count you toward our numbers and get you the info we put together.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"The time when there is no one there to feel sorry for you or to cheer for you is when a player is made
."
-Tim Duncan, NBA great
We're basically entering our off-season. Yet we are still running. Why? People always see us running at this time (after State) and wonder why we are still out there. Maybe even some of you (athletes and/or parents) are wondering the same thing. The answer is really pretty simple in two ways: 1) to get better - to be a better runner, you have to run today, tomorrow, the next day. You've got to keep grinding. The physiology of aerobic activities requires you to continually be building (it is much different that a ball sport in that way where you can not do it for a few months and then come back and pick it up pretty quickly; in running, you have to keep building month after month, year after year, and if you miss it is pretty noticeable). 2) we love it! What else do you have to say about that!
Now, during this time (even when we take our two weeks off next month), this is the time when all the foundation for gains and glory is made. So now that our season is over, what are you going to do to become better for the future?

October 31-Nov. 5 (Week 22)

Grateful to be coaches of an amazing team of awesome athletes! Thanks for the great season. It was so fun to see all the growth. For those that are interested, we'll keep running for the next month'ish, so keep looking for updates on here. And remember, those that are headed down to Nike, keep coming out to practice.

*NEXT YEAR HIGH ALTITUDE CAMP* JULY 17-20 AT JACOB LAKE - make your plans now.

Summer Moratorium will be June 28-July 4

Some other important announcements:

  • Nike SW Regional (NXR) - The final total will be $155 if you'd like to pay the full cost right now (includes, bus, hotel, and registration). Final payment due at the end of October. Spots are filled up if you haven't paid your intial $100 (if you would still like to go and haven't paid, talk to Coach Holt and we'll get you on the wait list - first come, first serve).
  • Those interested in going to Foot Locker/Eastbay/Champs (whatever else it wants to be called) in California in December, we should start planning that a bit too. We are thinking maybe some parents would like to drive and we can take 15-20 kids who might want to go. Give us some feedback if you want to go (athletes) or may want to help drive/chaperone (parents).

Race Report:
As always, PVXC really did a great job at State. The Hype Squads were unmatched and the team ran well. The girls took 2nd behind Cedar to take home our 9th straight 1st or 2nd place trophy! Leading the way was Brook who took 3rd. She was followed in the Top 10 by Adri in 8th, Kate 9th, and Katie 10th. Emmalle rounded out our scoring with a 17th place finish. While Ma'a took 23rd and Elle finished at 25th place. The girls had a great season and have proudly continued the tradition of this awesome program. The guys finished 4th which extended our streak of top 5 finishes at State to it's 15th year - the 2nd longest in Utah! We were proud to see Trey run an amazing race and finish as the State Champion in a time of 15:26 (the 5th boy individual State Champ in PV history). Also earning All-State honors were Talmage who finished 16th and Porter with his 18th place finish. They were followed by Bridger in 26th, Kyler 27th, Diego 48th, and Dane 57th. The boys team saw a ton of growth this year and has really set itself up for a some continued success to come.

Alumni Update:
Jessica and Julien both ran their conference meets this weekend. Jessica was Weber's 6th girl and Julien was Utah Tech's 4th. Congrats to both of them on their awesome seasons and good luck to Jess as she heads to the Mountain Regionals in Abq, NM in a couple weeks.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"An XC team will never be great unless it has that one kid that elevates the whole program by being uncompromising. The all-in, 'no matter what, I'm going to be good and we're going to be good' kid changes the whole face of the program
."
-Coach Adam Kedge
I'm pretty sure we've used this quote before - and here we are using it again... this time with the question: who's it going to be now? We've had some great runners and great leaders on this team for the past few years, and although we are lucky to have them around for the post-season and track, the time for others to start stepping up is NOW. So who is it going to be? Hopefully many of you are saying, "Me!" And if we can get a handful of you thinking that, and then acting like it, things are going to keep going in the right direction for PVXC for a long time.

Oct. 24-29 (Week 21)

21 weeks... nearly 150 days ago... that's when we met together on a (probably) hot June day to start up this season. And quite a season it has been: long hot summer runs, Kids Club Tuesdays, High Altitude Camp, some of you you're first 1,2,3,4, and 5 mile runs, some of you you're first 10 mile runs, early mornings before school, lightning, awesome races and bummer races, friendships formed, team parties, and goals accomplished - we can truly say we have CHOPPED WOOD CARRIED WATER. It's been an awesome year, and now we get to bring our season all together with State this week!

A little Decker production for some hype!

Race Report:
We had a great Region 10 Championships on Tuesday at the Bloomington Hills North Park. The weather was still a bit warm, and of course the grass was long, but PVXC gave it a great effort. Our guys in the JV B race did awesome and got us started well - Gary got the win and Parker R. took top 5. JV girls ran very well led by Ma'a taking a solid win. Brecken also ended up top 5, then Laney and Alianna ended up 15th and 16th. Unfortunately one of our top runners (one of the top runners in the race) wasn't able to finish, but we still took a close fourth as Olivia continued her improvement throughout the year to finish as our fifth. The JV boys also took 4th, as the JV A race was probably the most loaded JV field in our Region's history. Gaige led us with a 14th place finish followed by Evan, Bender, Keaton, Carson, Liam, and Kevin all within 17 seconds of Gaige (not a bad 1-7 spread). The Varsity Girls took a very close 2nd to Cedar by a score of 31-33. Brook took over the race halfway through and won in very strong fashion setting a course record by over 20 seconds. She was followed by Emmalle in 4th, Adri in 7th, Kate in 10th, Katie in 11th, and Elle in 14th. It was a great race by our girls and we're going to give it a real run for the money next week at State. The Varsity boys finished us up with another 4th place team finish. Joining Brook, Trey won the boys title to become the first time with a full region that both individual champ were from PV. And like Brook, Trey also broke the course record with his winning time. After Trey, we had a 10 second spread between Talmage, Bridger, Porter, and Kyler to round out our scoring. Diego wasn't far off our pack, and Dane ran well and secured a spot on the Varsity team for State. It was a definitely a great day to be a Panther as our team ran well and with class despite some adversity from different things.

Upcoming Events:
  • Race - 4A State Championships - Tuesday, October 25th, Varsity girls 3:00p, Varsity boys 4:00p; Regional Athletic Complex in SLC, Bus will be leaving Monday at 11:00a - those going out at 10:30a - here is the itinerary, we added a little info about lunch (also remember it will be cold, bring warm stuff). Hype Squads: be ready to bring your A Game! Varsity: let's zoom. Everyone: LET'S GO HAVE SOME FUN!
  • Ironman Volunteer - Friday and Saturday, October 28th and 29th, please plan on coming to help with the Ironman. We will meet at the Ironman roundabout on Main Street and Tabernacle in St. George at 8:45a. You probably will want to carpool. Both mornings we will be helping from around 9:00a to 1:00p parking the bikes like last year. This is a big fundraiser for our program and we really need everyone to come help (families and friends invited!). If you didn't sign up to help yet, go to https://ironman.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=59924 and register for the "T2 Bike Handlers" we did the 9:00a-1:00p shift on both Friday and Saturday. Make sure you enter our group name as PVXC.
  • PVXC Banquet - look for a date and time TBA soon (usually the frist or second week of November).
PVXC Thought of the Week:
"You don't have to be perfect; just go out and give it your best effort.
"
"Control what you can and don't worry about the rest. And the only thing you really can control is the effort you give."
-PVXC coaches probably
We've just talked about this a lot lately. No need to stress about all of this; you have tons of people who have you're back and will support you no matter what. If you can truthfully answer that you gave your very best effort for the day, then that is all there is to do. So go give your best... and we'll all be PROUD TO BE PANTHERS!

Alumni Update:
Julien ran for Utah Tech at the Bronco Invite in Santa Clara, California, and was the fifth guy on the team. Jessica went with Weber St. out to Pre-Nationals on the campus of Oklahoma St. and was the fourth scorer for the Wildcat women who took 9th place.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Winning is fun... Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you've done is the point
."
-Pat Summitt (winningest coach in NCAA bball history)
and... learning to become a good teammate and person is the point, growing is the point, overcoming adversity is the point, experiencing the joy of seeing teammates succeed is the point, grinding when no one outside of your family and a small circle of friends really even notices (or cares) is the point, and on and on.
As we head into championship season, a lot is focused toward winning - or even just hitting our very best races. But in reality, I've "lost" a lot more races than I've won, teams I've coached have "lost" more times than won, shoot even my favorite sports teams have lost way more than they've won (insert crying face emoji = Dodgers). So why do we keep doing all this? Because it's not about winning and "losing", it's about becoming the best people we can be. And I truly believe that the only real losers are those that either lose sight of this or quit trying because they didn't "win". When we are able to shift our mindset to this one of growth and finding joy in CHOPPING WOOD and CARRYING WATER then (and only then) can we have real happiness. I also believe that when we can find this real happiness, a lot of good things happen out on the course! Finally, I'll tell you what, it has brought me a lot of joy seeing so many of you start to understand this and work toward it every day - even through the ups and downs.

Oct. 10-15 (Week 19)

We just want to say that we are very proud of this team and the hard work that each of you are putting in. A team can't be great without the individual parts working, committing, and doing hard things each and every day as we move to a common goal. Often people look at XC, and running in general, as an individual sport. But those who know, know that it is more of a team sport than most anything out there. We are nothing without each person on this team contributing and making us what we are.

Race Report:
Cedar Invite - It was a beautiful fall day for XC. It was awesome to see so many improvements from the year (even compared to last week). Congrats to our whole Youngsters team and a huge thanks to Coach Martha for running the program and building the next generation. The first race was the Girls Varsity; faced with a little adversity, they responded very well: Brook ran a strong race and placed 2nd overall to lead the team to a 2nd place finish; she was followed by Kate in 6th, Katie in 11th, Adri in 12th, and Brianna making her Varsity debut as the 32nd scorer. The Varsity Boys continue to see good growth: Trey is setting a great example of hard work and commitment as well as mental toughness and it is paying off with another win; Talmage followed up with a big breakthrough sub 16 to take 13th, Bridger followed with a 22nd place, Porter 23rd, Kyler27th, Diego 36th, and Dane placed 43rd; the team placed a very solid 4th. The JV Girls were next: we had two medalists with Brecken 3rd and Laney 4th, and the team took 4th. The JV boys took 3rd led by Keaton in 9th and then a solid pack of Evan, Gaige, Parker, Carson and Grant. Our final races were the Fresh/Soph races. The girls didn't have enough racers to score but all three (Olivia, Rowyn, and Bella) ran very well. The boys took 3rd: despite some runner misdirection that cost Bender a few places and probably around 15-20 secs he officially took 9th (and 2nd Freshman, could have been 1st?), Liam placed 13th and was a top 5 Freshman, AJ did tremendous to place 22nd, then Jake led a strong pack with his 29th, Ian 30th, Ben 34th. Here's a spreadsheet that shows the improvements of the team throughout the year on this Cedar course. (Also note, the large improvements for many members of the team from their first race at Cedar earlier in their HS careers.. no doubt some of the biggest improvements in the future will be from the the Freshman - those mentioned and others - who have really just had an amazing season). PV Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

Alumni Update:
Julien ran for Utah Tech at the SUU Invite and improved upon his time from last year by around 40 seconds. Coach Jason also ran in the alumni race and took the DUB! Some PVXC legends also joined in the SUU alumni race with school record holder Mike Finch running and State Champion Dave Sheeran also racing.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Today many will break through the barriers of the past by looking at the blessings of the present
."
-Steve Mariboli
We're going to talk a little about break throughs on Monday, and I thought this was a cool quote that goes along with it in a way. So put your own thoughts into this, and let's be ready to share something about it tomorrow.

Oct. 3-8 (Week 18)

Another solid week down. Thanks for all the help at the Youngsters race. It went very well and the kids had a good time. Also, good job on the Cedar race. And, a huge thanks to everyone that helped out at the marathon. (I'm actually writing this before the marathon, so hopefully it's all true!) Things went great, and I know the runners appreciated your help and enthusiasm.

Some other important announcements:

  • Nike SW Regional (NXR) - We are getting the bus and hotels finalized. So we will update you with a final cost very soon. We will have our $100 down payment due on October 12th. Please pay with cash to Coach Holt or by Venmo to @Dave-Holt77 by then.

Give us some feedback if you want to go (athletes) or may want to help drive/chaperone (parents).

Purpose of the Week's Workouts: This week's workouts. We move into our Competition phase of training for the next few weeks. Here we focus more on Race Pace and Goal RP work and getting us ready to race our fastest at Region and State. Some may notice that we don't have a huge drop of minutes yet (although a bit more of a drop for JV than Varsity). From my coaching experience, a very common mistake among all runners is to back off too much too soon. We want our fastest race to be at our most important race (Region for JV and State for Varsity), so it is important to keep our minutes solid and our workouts zesty until just before those races.

Race Report:
Cedar/CV/PV Tri - It was so nice to get a race in with cooler temps and a good quick course! We went with the purpose of working on some specific things and for the most part did very well at those things. Scoring was definitely in our favor as Cedar and CV pulled their top Varsity runners, so the girls and the boys were just off perfect scores with a 16 and 17 points respectfully. PV Full results for all our races can always be found at athletic.net

Alumni Update:
Jessica raced this weekend for Weber... I'll update if I get info. And a big congrats to all our PVXC alumni and family who ran the St. George Marathon.

PVXC Thought of the Week:
"Just because your worried, doesn't mean it won't go well. Just because you're unsure if you can, doesn't mean you can't. Just because things have been tough, doesn't mean they won't get better. Just because (negative) thoughts feel real, doesn't mean they are true
."
-adapted from an internet post by @iamhaylekaye (whoever that is)
Just thought this could be pretty helpful to a lot of us. Many of us have at least one of these feelings/thoughts and they often get in our way of being our best selves. It is important to recognize that pretty much everyone is worried, unsure, has had tough times, and thinks negative thoughts. And it is even more important to realize that these are normal and we can work through them. We can begin to work through difficult thoughts when we accept that we all have them and start to recognize that those thoughts aren't us - they don't own us. We can move beyond them and grow!
