Week of Sept. 2-7 (Week 14)

PVXC, all of you are really killing it! Very few people understand the level of commitment and dedication it takes to be successful at this sport. Everyone of you really deserve a huge congrats for all your hard work (and this includes parents and family; without your support - and sometimes push - all this wouldn't come together).
Many of you might be a little low on hydration going into Monday; make sure you drink a bunch Sunday evening.

Purpose of the week's workouts - For the next 4 weeks, we go into our Pre-Competition Phase. The goal of this month is to combine our longer 8K intervals with some race pace and sub-race pace work to prep us for the important meets of October. We will also be bringing in Hill Circuits for everyone to really develop strength.

August Athletes of the Month -
Girls - Jessica Hill. Jessica started the month of August with the top finish at the PVXC Time Trial and finished the month as the top Senior and a 7th place finish at the Weber State Invite while leading the team to a Division Championship. In between, she won a plate as the top 1st leg runner at the Desert Relays.
Boys - Luke Huddleston. Luke has led the Panthers throughout the month as well. In just his second year of running, Luke has distinguished himself as one of the top runners in the 4A division. He started the year with a Leg victory at the Desert Relays and was the 3rd 4A finisher at the Weber State Invite.

Race Report -
Weber State Invite - The Varsity squads went up to run at the Weber State Invite on Friday and then watch alumni Josie Bushar (SUU) and Rylee Holt (UVU) run at the UVU Invite on Saturday. Both Boys and Girls ran well in the very hot conditions Friday evening. The girls were led by Jessica who finished 7th overall and top Senior. Following Jess were Alli in 16th, Adri in 20th and 2nd Freshman, Pyper in 21st, and Brinley in 36th. Brooklyn (54th) and Jenessa (58th) finishing as our 6 and 7 displaced the 4th and 5th scorers of every team outside of the top 3.  Overall we placed 2nd and took home the trophy as the top team in the 3A-4A division.  The boys were led by a strong race from Luke who was in the top 15 throughout the race before finishing in 21st. Scottie finished in 39th and JD 44th. Boston (94th) and Jason (109th) rounded out our top 5. Gabe continues to close the gap to the top 5 and finished in 112th followed by Tyler in 160th. The boys finished a solid 8th and 2nd in the 3A-4A division.

Youngsters Running Club - Our youth club has been rolling for a week, but we are still open for any 6th-8th graders to join us. Practice is Monday and Thursday at 3:00 at PVHS. For questions email Coach Holt at pineviewxc@gmail.com. Youngsters race this Tuesday at 5:30p - we will be racing a shortened version of the high school race at the St. George Golf Course.

Thought of the Week: "Don't worry about being the best. Worry about being the best at getting better. Set a goal and make it a North Star to shoot for - but then focus all your energy and attention on the process. The process is the present moment. The present moment is where you live your life"
-Brad Stulberg
We've noticed this a lot in races and workouts, but we want you to think about this idea in every aspect of your life. As for running: We've been working a lot on refocusing and this quote is like another form of refocusing. Often we get discouraged when we aren't the best or doing our best (it's not that hard to notice when things aren't going very well). This discouragement leads to a chain of events that can be hard to dig out of. To break this chain, the most important thing is to realize that we do not have to be perfect; we do not have to be the best. Instead, focus on the present moment (what is happening right now) and then be determined to be getting better at that exact moment. Most of the time we can do that. And then we can do that again. And again. Then if we find a moment where we are upset as we lose that focus, refocus on getting better again and put all your energy at the present moment into getting better in the present moment.
