Week of Sept. 30-Oct. 5 (Week 18)

We've made it through the hardest weeks on our workout calendars! Add Homecoming, and school work, and just everything else in life, and it's been a draining few weeks. But everyone is doing so well. Now is a great time to refocus on goals and the things that help us individually and as a team reach those goals and to get doing them.

Purpose of the week's workouts - We now enter our Competition Phase. This week we will see a significant cut in minutes - we want to help you freshen up those legs and that mind a little. But, we still have plenty of work to do, so the workouts need to be crisp and on point. To help us accomplish this, let's try our very best to make sure we are healthy and rested. Get sleep, keep hydrated, and eliminate extra stress by keeping up on school work and studying (instead of trying to cram everything in).

IF YOU HAVE PINE VIEW GEAR, WEAR IT TO PRACTICE!
and remember bright or white in the mornings is required

Week 17 Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder -
Tough at Practice -
Best Performance -

Race Report -
Canyon View Invite - Sitting our varsity gave some of our JV athletes an opportunity to step us and race very well this week. In the Var Boys race our top five were all Frosh/Sophs. Gabe was our top finisher placing 12th overall, followed by Trey, Bentley, Keaton, and Kenny. Jenna led the Var girls with a 17th place finish. Rounding out our scoring were Kyanne, Addie T., Allison, and Emma.  Elijah ran a strong race to pace our JV squad. He was followed by Nic who continues to see big improvements, Carter, Ethan, and Nathan. Both boys squads placed 5th. Our JV girls were led by Macy and Sadie who finished with nearly identical times. Then Madeline, Adelin, and Hannah all ran well to round out the scoring. Both girls teams finished 4th. In the Youth races, both Talmage and AJ finished in the top 10 with Liam right behind in 12th. The girls had enough entries to score as a team - taking 3rd overall with a finishing order of Kate, Summer, Brianna, Laney, Andi, and Brecken.

Youngsters Running Club - We are still open for any 6th-8th graders to join us. Practice is Monday and Thursday at 3:00 at PVHS. For questions email Coach Holt at pineviewxc@gmail.com. Youngsters race this Friday at Cedar at 3:00. Cost will be announced soon (thinking $2-$3). We have to preregister, so please let Coach Bethany know on Monday if you are planning on attending.

Alumni Report - Josie raced for SUU at Roy Griak in Minnesota this past weekend. She continues to improve and impress. She finished 42nd scorer in the women's gold race and 6th scorer right next to her 5th and 7th place teammates for SUU.

Thought of the Week: "Everyone is born with a growth mindset. A toddler learning to walk keeps getting up after falling down. It's not about developing a growth mindset. It's simply remembering you always had it."
-Jon Gordon
We always talk about the Growth Mindset and how important it is to develop one. This quote, however, really hits it on the head - we've all always had a growth mindset in us somewhere. Over time, unfortunately, various things/people in life try to beat that out of us. Remember, it that growth mindset is in there somewhere. We all just need to tap into an experience where we have used it before to help remind us that we have it and have used it and can use it again.
A challenge for this evening... think of a time where you used a growth mindset to help you overcome a challenge or accomplish something that required continued improvement and come to team meeting Monday ready to talk about it.

Weekly Challenge -

Week 16 Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder - Bentley Bushar, So. Bentley is a huge supporter of his teammates in every way. He is always pulling for them to do their best whether he is running at their side or cheering them on at a meet.
Tough at Practice - Jason Lunt, Jr. Jason has had some great workouts in the past few weeks and is looking to break through and keep pushing his team to higher levels.
Best Performance - Brooklyn Hill, Fr. The past two meets, Brook has had very solid performances and has moved into scoring position for the Panthers - making our team even stronger with every run.

Race Report -
Viking Invite - We haven't ever attended this meet, but circumstances brought us here this season, and the team performed well.  On Friday, the Varsity team got our afternoon practice in on the State course for the 3rd and final time for the season (we are feeling prepped and ready to roll in a month!). The course on Saturday was a bit muddy and sloppy from the rains on Friday. It consisted of a 3x1mile loop course almost entirely on the grass (with a small section of the track). The Varsity girls started us out well. Jess got out with the front runners and held their throughout the race. She finished a strong 3rd in a time of 18:48. Alli battled throughout and finished 5th. And Adri had her best race of the season to put 3 Panthers in the top 10 with a 9th place finish. Brooklyn continues to improve and was our 4th runner with a 23rd place finish. Then Pyper finished out our scoring with her 29th place finish. Jenessa placed 39th and Allison 57th. With a mix of strong races and off races, we still pulled off the win by a score of 63 to 68 over Lone Peak. The boys had a similar race with some Panthers running very well, and a few being a little off. We were led by a very strong race from Luke (he just continues to put himself into position to run with the best in the State and every week he gets better and better at it). He was 7th overall and just the 2nd non-AF runner. Scottie placed 16th, followed closely by James and Boston in 23rd and 24th. Through these 4 we were not far off 2nd place and in a very solid 3rd. Dakota, running in his first true Varsity race, showed that he is ready to help sure up the 5th spot with a good run to round out our scoring. His 50th place landed us in 4th, just a few points off 3rd. Finishing not long after Dakota were Tyler and Jason. Read the Milesplit recap here.

Youngsters Running Club - We are still open for any 6th-8th graders to join us. Practice is Monday and Thursday at 3:00 at PVHS. For questions email Coach Holt at pineviewxc@gmail.com. Youngsters race this Saturday at Canyon View at 10:00 (but maybe 9:15). Cost is $1. We have to preregister, so please let Coach Bethany know on Monday if you are planning on attending.

Thought of the Week: "Be where your feet are."
-unknown
There are a lot of ways you can apply this thought - It fits very well in both running and life (as well as in the balance of the two). When it is time to be doing school work, focus on school work. When it is time to hang with the fam, focus on the fam. Be where your feet are. And then... When it is time to run, focus on running.  And while you are running, be in the present. You can't think about the bad move you just made, or how tired you are, or how much you have left in front of you, or whatever else; just focus on that exact moment you are on: do what you are supposed to do that step, that second, that breath. Then do it again.

Week of Sept. 16-21 (Week 16)

IF YOU HAVEN'T TURNED IN YOUR PINK PAPER FOR FOOTLOCKER,
PLEASE BRING IT TO PRACTICE TOMORROW!
(the coaches have to plan the trip and need the #'s)
It's cooling off!... kind of. With cooler temps, comes the opportunity for stronger workouts. But those only come with continued commitment to every big and little thing that makes us better. Here is maybe the most important idea of the week: everything you do affects our team. Sometimes individually, we think that whatever we do just comes back on us, but this is a team program and everything that happens to one person comes back to all of us. So let's be to practice, let's be on time, let's keep our grades solid, let's do all our drills and do them well, let's keep positive attitudes and work on letting the little things go and being accountable for the things we need to be accountable for.

Purpose of the week's workouts - You might be feeling a little burnt from our Pre-Competition Phase. The Hill Circuits were tough the other day, and the race pace workouts are tough. Just know that these are the workouts that set PR's in early October and win Championships in mid-October. So do your best at every run, and do your best at all the other things that will help you bounce back from these workouts.

IF YOU HAVE PINE VIEW GEAR, WEAR IT TO PRACTICE!
and remember bright or white in the mornings is required

Here's our schedule for the week - all practices at PVHS unless noted, am practices we will meet by the glass room/weight room, afternoon practices we will meet under the marquee at the front of the school). Afternoon practices will generally run from 3:00p - 5:00p.

Tuesday: am - 6:15 weights and short recovery run (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Wednesday: am - 6:15 easy recovery run (Level 3, 2 optional, no Level 1 or Freshman/Sophomore) / afternoon - 3:00 (everyone)
Thursday: am - 6:15 weights and short recovery run (Levels 2 and 3, 1 optional) / afternoon 3:00 (everyone)
Friday: am - 6:15 easy recovery run and yoga (Levels 2 and 3 optional, no Level 1 or Freshman) / afternoon (everyone)

Week 15 Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder -
Tough at Practice -
Best Performance -

Race Report -
Hurricane Invite - The Hurr. Invite was held Weds. at the Sky Mountain Golf Course. The new course had quick sections and some very tough sections.  Our top finishers on the girls' side were Brinley (9th), and Allison (11th) and Kennis (12th). In the JV race, Madeline, Sadie and Emily all placed in the top 10 with great efforts. In the boys' race, Dakota and Tyler were top 10 finishers. And in the JV race, Trey was 9th and Bentley took 1st! We've been seeing a lot of improvement from our JV and younger runners. Keep up the hard work and try every day to grow your commitment.

Youngsters Running Club - Our youth club has been rolling for a week, but we are still open for any 6th-8th graders to join us. Practice is Monday and Thursday at 3:00 at PVHS. For questions email Coach Holt at pineviewxc@gmail.com. Youngsters race this Snow Canyon at 9:00. Cost is $2.

Alumni Report -
Four of our former teammates were in action this weekend with their college teams. Carson and Nathan raced at the BYU Invite. Carson had the strongest race of his collegiate career and placed 6th for Weber. Nathan was racing for the first time in 9 months and placed 8th Dixie. Josie and Rylee were both in California racing at the Riverside Invite. Josie ran a very good race and placed 7th for SUU, and Rylee had a much improved race and pushed herself to the 3rd JV spot for UVU. We are very proud of our PVXC alumni and their hard work and dedication. Who's going to be the next Panther harrier to move up to the college level?

Thought of the Week: "For the first 30 minutes, Kobe did nothing but very basic footwork and pivoting drills."
-Alan Stein on watching his first Kobe Bryant workout
There is no magic workout, routine, or inspirational saying that separates the "pretty goods" and the "greats". But one could be pretty sure that something that does distinguish the two groups is those that take the care and time to do the little things correctly. We have many "little things" that we work on to try and be better runners - what are they? Be prepared to have a short discussion on them this week. And while you think of them, think about how you are doing with them. What can you do better?

Week 14 Athletes of the Week -
Team Builder - Emma Ward, Jr. There isn't anyone around that brings a better attitude to practice and the team than Emma. Her positive attitude is infectious.
Tough at Practice - Scottie Bushar, Jr. Scottie has really been digging into workouts and pushing the top group of Varsity boys.
Best Performance - Kenny Olsen, Fr. Kenny finished top 10 in the Freshman race at Murray. In the past few races, he is making a serious push toward the Varsity.

Race Report -
Dixie All-Comers - On Tuesday we had a good (and very hot) race previewing the Region course at St. George Golf Course. Although we pulled our Varsity, the Panthers still represented very well. On the girls side, PVXC took 2nd place with Emma and Kylee in the top 10. Allison, Kennis, Jenna, Addie and Kyanne all finished in the top 25. And Brinley would have placed in the top 10 with her time from the boy's race. In the boy's race, Caleb was our top finisher followed by Dakota and Elijah in the top 30.
Murray Invite - This race was proof that our hard work is really starting to pay off.  The times were stellar across the board. But it was much more than times, it was the effort everyone was putting into racing that shows our growth. The day started with the Seeded (Varsity) races. The girls had great packing and saw big races from everyone. Jess and Alli placed in the top 20 followed by Adri and Pyper in 29th and 30th. Brook followed next in 49th and was then quickly trailed by Jenessa in 55th. Rounding out the team were Emma in 70th and Jenna in 101st. Overall, the ladies placed 3rd behind two nationally ranked programs in Lone Peak and Farmington. The boys looked strong, too, and were led by Luke in 21st and Scottie in 28th. Boston and JD ran very well and placed 42nd and 44th. Our scoring was rounded out by Jason in 111th and then Gabe followed in 115th and Tyler in 132nd. This enough to place the boys 6th overall (behind 4 nationally ranked programs) and the top 4A team. In the Open Boy's Race, our top finishers were Dakota and Caleb who ran a 17:06 and a  17:18 respectively. In the Open Girl's Race, Allison (32nd) and Kylee (46th) raced very well. Sadie also had her best race of the year to finish in the top 100. Likewise, Nic had his best race to be a top 100 finisher in the Soph Boy's Race. In the Soph Girl's race, Kyanne ran very well to claim our top individual placer of the meet with a 6th place finish. She was joined in the top 20 by Addie who raced very well to take 17th. Emily also had her best race as a Panther to take 32nd in the same race. Hannah ran well as our lone representative in the Fresh Girl's Race, and Kenny (10th) and Trey (14th) claimed top 15 finishes in the Freshman Boy's Race. Overall, A Great Day to Be a Panther!

Youngsters Running Club - Our youth club has been rolling for a week, but we are still open for any 6th-8th graders to join us. Practice is Monday and Thursday at 3:00 at PVHS. For questions email Coach Holt at pineviewxc@gmail.com. Youngsters race this Wednesday at 4:00 - we will be racing a shortened version of the high school race at the Sky Mountain Golf Course. Cost is $2.

Thought of the Week: "Ultimately, running is deeply personal. That's why it's so important to us. At its core, it's you vs. you and there's huge value in this battle."
&
"Running is the best method I know for people to learn that they can be so much more than they ever dreamed they could be."
-Greg McMillan
Have you found your why? People often ask us runners why we do this hard thing - in fact, it's a great question to ask yourself... it's a great question to ask yourself well before you are out running in the 110 degree heat, or trying to wake up for an am practice, or pushing hard through the 3rd mile up some hideous hill. Many of us find our why answered in the ideas of these quotes. Running is something that really can touch your soul and bring out the very best of you. Remember, the mission of PVXC - TO LIVE and RUN GREATLY!

Week of Sept. 2-7 (Week 14)

PVXC, all of you are really killing it! Very few people understand the level of commitment and dedication it takes to be successful at this sport. Everyone of you really deserve a huge congrats for all your hard work (and this includes parents and family; without your support - and sometimes push - all this wouldn't come together).
Many of you might be a little low on hydration going into Monday; make sure you drink a bunch Sunday evening.

Purpose of the week's workouts - For the next 4 weeks, we go into our Pre-Competition Phase. Thought of the Week: "Don't worry about being the best. Worry about being the best at getting better. Set a goal and make it a North Star to shoot for - but then focus all your energy and attention on the process. The process is the present moment. The present moment is where you live your life"
-Brad Stulberg
We've noticed this a lot in races and workouts, but we want you to think about this idea in every aspect of your life. As for running: We've been working a lot on refocusing and this quote is like another form of refocusing. Often we get discouraged when we aren't the best or doing our best (it's not that hard to notice when things aren't going very well). This discouragement leads to a chain of events that can be hard to dig out of. To break this chain, the most important thing is to realize that we do not have to be perfect; we do not have to be the best. Instead, focus on the present moment (what is happening right now) and then be determined to be getting better at that exact moment. Most of the time we can do that. And then we can do that again. And again. Then if we find a moment where we are upset as we lose that focus, refocus on getting better again and put all your energy at the present moment into getting better in the present moment.
