State 2014

It was a solid day for Pine View XC at the 2014 3A State Championships held at Sugar House Park in SLC.  The girls capped of an amazing season with a close 2nd place finish and our 2nd fastest team time ever at the State Course.  As usual, our strength was our tight pack and depth.  Senior caption Nicole Heinrich ran an inspired race leading our team with a 14th place finish - 2nd Team All-State - in a time of 19:43.  Following in just a 28 second spread were Freshman Caroline Clements (who set a new PV Freshman record!), Josie Bushar (both 3rd Team All-State), Meskerem Stucki, and Alli Peterson.  Our two other freshmen, Jacey Finch and Ellie Bushar finished very well also placing just behind Alli.  Taking a look at the merged scoring, saw PV place 11th in the whole state and having our 7 runners in before every team in the Utah except national top 15 teams American Fork and Davis.  What a great end to a fantastic season.  We are super proud and grateful of all of the 19 girls who finished the season with our team - but especially Nicole Heinrich, Sarah Deuel, and Moani Andresen… thank you for all you have meant to our team over the years!

In the boy's race, our team had another strong finish at State - ending up 4th.  Despite it not being our best race, and our team being a bit off our best, we still ran hard and were in the mix for a podium finish for much of the race.  Strong performances by Jake Taylor and Jason Hall placed them into the 3rd Team All-State category.  Nick Hill once again led our team with his 11th place finish, and Alex Hill ran the 5th fastest Freshman time of the day.  He was followed closely by Paul Gaona and then Senior captain Cam Brown to round out our finishing order.

Kaylee at Pre-Nats

Although many of our alumni are out on missions, we do have one former Panther running in college this year.  Kaylee Able (Boyer) placed 7th and just seconds off of 5th for the T-Birds at Pre-Nationals in Terra Haute, In. today.  Great job Kaylee - way to get it going this year!

Panther Harriers Earn SW Honors

The PVXC boys have received votes in the Milesplit SouthWest Regional Rankings - Great job men!  Let's go earn that Elite Race spot at Nike SW.

Region 9 Championships

An amazing day of Region 9 XC running at the Region 9 South Course at Bloomington Hills Park.

The day started with the JV girls placing the highest they have in recent memory with a 3rd place showing - just 10 points off of 1st.  Carli Kimzey ran an amazing and gusty race taking 2nd.  She was followed in the top ten by Brianna Loya, 4th, and Megan Finch, 8th.  Although this is a very tough, hilly, windy course and it was a warm day for mid-October, many girls ran their best races of the year - some even hitting near PR times.
The JV boys took 2nd placing all 5 scores in the top 10.  Paul Gaona led much of the race and finished 2nd.  He was followed very closely by Mitch Price - running his best race of the year and taking 4th overall.  Then the trio of Skylar Abel, Logan Hirschi and Zach Crowell rounded out our scoring.  It was a very close race with the DH and the boys ran with guts.
The Varsity girls came into the race with a real shot at a Region title after defeating Cedar at their invite and they took full opportunity!  The girls got out strong and used their excellent packing to move up throughout the race finishing with a 24 second spread and with all 5 scorers in before Cedar's 2nd and Snow Canyon's 3rd girls!  Leading our team were the Bushar sisters - with Josie finishing 7th and Ellie right behind her in 8th.  Caroline Clements rounded out the Region medalist and took 10th.  She was followed closely by Alli Peterson and Nicole Heinrich who secured the title and 2nd-Team All-Region honors with their finishes.  As we have all year, our 6th and 7th runners also contributed by finishing before all teams 5th runners and knocking their scorers down.  Congrats ladies on the Region Title!

The boys came into the race with nationally ranked DH looking to improve on last week's race and get some momentum heading into State.  The boys ran very well and were in great position throughout the race.  Nick Hill raced with the lead group and ended up 3rd (in a time that would have been a new Region record).  Also finishing in the top ten were Jake Taylor 7th and Dallen Gillespie 8th.  Rounding out our scoring and securing the dominate 2nd place finish were Alex Hill and Cam Brown.
We are all so proud of everyone of you who pushed so hard this season and made another amazing season of Pine View X-Country.  We are the greatest program ever!

Snow Canyon and Youngster Time Trial

Great racing by our JV harriers at the Snow Canyon Invite.  Many continue to set PR's and run their best races of the year.  It is a testament to hard work and dedication that all of you are seeing such great improvements!
Also great racing by our Youngsters in their last race of the year.  Since the Youngsters weren't allowed to run at Snow Canyon and Region this year, we adjusted the schedule and had a "skills development race" for our 6th-8th graders on the Time Trial course at PV.  Scottie Bushar became the 2nd Youngster to break 6:00 on the course, and he was followed closely by Mikey Albegreen and Alex Klein.  The race of the day was Addi Baker.  She set a new girl's record come in just under the old record with a 5:54.  Many PR's for the boys and girls today... great job!

Youngsters and FootLocker

Important changes have been set in motion for out Youngsters program.  The district has become concerned with the involvement of 6th-8th graders in cross country and has called for an end to our season.  Fortunately, our program has only a few minor changes to implement and we will be in compliance.  So what does this mean for us?  We will continue to hold Youngster practices through the PVXC Club and with Coach Martha Baker at the regularly schedule times.  We will not, however, be able to have our final two meets of the season - at Snow Canyon and Region.  Instead, PVXC will be hosting a skills development race (Time Trial) at PV this coming week, most likely on Friday.  Those who are planning on racing at FootLocker, will need to follow the guidelines discussed below.  While the rest of our Youngsters will receive more information about winter and spring training within the next week.  At PV, we continue to have the largest and most successful Youngsters program in the area.  We are so thankful to Martha.  She is a great coach who loves working with each of these developing Panther harriers.  We appreciate the hard work of parents who get their kids to races and practice and want to see their kids learn the values taught through distance running.  And we, of course, are so proud to have the Youngsters with us on our club team.  They are amazing runners and have so much energy.  Keep up the great work and keep coming around… our program will always be here running and we want everyone who wants to, to be a part of it too!
Another bit of info for FootLocker.  All athletes planning on attending the FootLocker/California trip with the PVXC Club need to have the entire $165 payment taken care of by October 6th.  We have a few seats left and we need them sold for $ sake and we want them sold for the coolness of having more of our teammates coming.  If no high schooler's claim them (or those who haven't finished their payments don't pay in full), we will sell the seats off to other runners - possibly from other schools.  Please remember that everyone who goes to Cali (except "manager of the year - Chandler") needs to sign up for and run one of the races.  You can find the link to sign up by going to FootLocker West Region and following the links.  Athletes who plan on attending this trip, must continue to be committed to the team and practice up through the trip.  Those who can't meet these requirements are asked to not attend.

Cedar Invite

Cedar Invite is always a key race for our team.  Not only does it finalize our Varsity rosters for Region and enter us into the championship season, the race is a great comparison to one of our first races of the season on this same course.
Many of our Youngsters had great races.  Our girls took places 2-5.  And we saw great races from Sarah Snow (2nd), Jessica Hill, Pyper Holt and many others.  The boys also ran very well.  Leading the team were Alex Klein and Scottie Bushar.
The JV Girls may have seen some of the best Season Records and improvements of the day.  The JV girls took 4th - just 10 points off of Cedar.  Carli Kimzey ran an outstanding race and placed 7th overall.  Other great races included Macey Widdison, Annelise Burr and Irene Salinas.
The JV Boys were locked in a great team race with DHells.  After Hellians took 2 and 3rd, Skylar Abel  outsprinted Logan Hirschi to the line for a 4 and 5 for PV.  We then placed 7 (Zach Crowell), 8 (Mitch Price) and 12 (Macen Walker) to come up 2nd in the race by a score of 33-36.  Many of our JV Boys ran great races and showed great improvement from the first of the year.
The Varsity Girls ran the race of the day.  Using our team depth, we were able to break up Cedar's scorers much better than last week at Nebo.  The girls ran with confidence and determination and placed 7, 11, 14, 17, 19, 29, 32 (Josie, Nicole, Caroline, Alli, Ellie, Meskerem, Jacey).  Winning the title by a score of 67 to 74.  The long-term consequences of this race are going to be huge to our team.  This race shows us what it takes to win Region and State Titles.  Congrats to all the girls who ran so well and accomplished times that may have seemed unrealistic at the beginning of the season.  But in doing so… they not only won the meet title, but they set the PV team record for the Cedar course - 54 seconds faster than our 2011 team which took 2nd in State and ran our fastest team time at State by over 4 minutes!
The meet ended with our Varsity Boys taking 3rd place to strong DHells and Page teams.  Nick Hill was our leading runner, once again, placing 9th in 15:32.

Nebo/Wahsatch

We had a rainy, chilly and great trip to northern Utah for our team overnighter.  Our racing started with our 7-10 boys running the JV race at Nebo.  The all ran well, working together to push themselves to great times and help determine who our Varsity will be in our final few races as we head into championship season.  The Varsity ladies then ran as a strong pack.  Although it wasn't our best race, it was a great team effort and we place all 7 runners in front of our main rival's - Cedar - 5th girl.  That teamwork pushed us to a 4th place finish in this large invite.  The Varsity boys then ran and had strong performances from Nick Hill, Paul Gaona and Dallen Gillespie.
The following day, the Varsity practiced at the State course and then got down to the Cottonwood Complex just in time to watch the JV girls at the Wahsatch Rendevzous.  For our team, this course and the Region South course are most like the experience of running at State with the rolling hills and all grass courses.  The JV girls ran excellent and placed 3rd in the team scoring led by Megan Finch (7th), Brianna Loya (8th) and Carli Kimzey (12th).  The JV boys also ran very well and 2nd - just a few points off 5A Herriman.  The boys were led by Mitch Price with a 4th place finish; followed by Macen Walker (7th), Skylar Abel (11th) and Zach Crowell (14th).  It was a great meet and brought our weekend to a very good end.
