For the first time under the helm of Coach Holt, both the Pine View boys and girls x-country teams were represented in the State Championships. The girls got the beautiful day started by finishing 14th in the State led by Ashley Judd who finished 24th and was selected to the Utah 4A Senior All-Star Team. This is a very respectable finish for the young team that had only two runners from the last PV girls team to run at state (2006) and is only losing 2 Senior runners.
The boys took 4th (tying for 3rd and losing the tie-breaker to Orem by just 2 places). Competing against some of the top rated teams in the nation, this was a great finish for the team. The 35 second spread from 1-5 was the second best in the entire state (2nd only to Mountain View); and losing only 1 Varsity competitor to graduation, PV is looking to compete for a State Title next season.
Great job to every member of the team; those that competed at state, JV runners that pushed all season long, and of course all those that supported the team throughout entire long season!

Region 9 Champs!
The boys team captured the Region 9 Championship for the 2008 season! But this wasn't the only great result for the team on this day.
The girls team had two great moments as not only did Ashley Judd win the Region 9 individual Girls' Title (leading wire-to-wire) by over 40 seconds - the 3rd straight individual title for a Panther Harrier, but the team took a solid 2nd to SC and qualified for State! Cassidy Ferris also claimed 1st team All-Region honors with her 7th place finish. Here are the complete Varsity Girls results:
The JV Girls also ran very well on the long (3.2 miles) muddy course also finishing 2nd to SC with Mariah Baker as the top runner - finishing 4th in 27:47 even with breathing problems.
The Boys continued their dominance of Region 9 by sweeping the top 12 spots in the JV race! Led by Freshman Devin Gillespie who finished in 18:56 - becoming the second straight PV Freshman to win the JV race (Trevor Thompson - 2007).
On the Varsity side, the Panthers easily ran to victory with a team score of 23 points, placing 6 runners in the top 10 (and honoring 4 year Panther Harriers Josh Decker and RJ Smith who ran Varsity to help earn the team title). Varsity Boys' results:

Shayna Henrie & Danny Gillespie
Congrats to our October athletes of the month!
Shayna has been battling a nagging little injuries all year long that had really held her back until the end of the season, when things really started to roll for her. Shayna earned Athlete of the Month for her tremendous performance at State where she finished a very solid 5th on the team with a season (all-distance) pr by over 30 seconds. With this kind of improvement watch out for this Sophomore for 2 more solid years.
Danny earned Athlete of the Month honors for the boys team this past month. Danny's amazing improvement also culminated in a great finish at State where he finished just .5 behind Corey for 4th on the team and 30th in the State! Throughout the year Danny has consistently closed the gap between himself and the top 3, now reaching the point that there is no distinction as we carry 4 potential top 10 runners into the 2009 season!

Cassidy Ferris and Trevor Thompson
Our Pine View Cross-Country runners of the month for September are Cassidy Ferris and Trevor Thompson!
Cassidy is an 11th grader in her first year of x-country running. As a quality mid-sprint runner on the track team last year, Cassidy was convinced of the benefit of running long-distance to help her become better. She has since become so good, that maybe she won't ever go back to the sprints! Cassidy has consistenly been the 2nd runner for the Varsity squad throughout the year. She also leads the team in number of times throwing-up during this season! Cassidy's great work ethic and dedication compliment her positive attitude perfectly and have really brought a lot to the team this year. Her leading time this year is a 21:35 at last week's Cedar Invitational.
Trevor has distinguished himself as one of the top Sophmores in the state of Utah. His season highlights include a 7th place overall finish at the BYU Autumn Classic (17:34 - 3.3 miles), an 8th place overall finish at Murray (16:22 - 5K), and a overall #1 at Provo Bulldog Invite (17:05 - 3.2 miles). Trevor's amazing ability is going to play a crucial role on in the success of this top-notch boys' program for many years to come!
Congratulations Trevor and Cassidy - Keep up the good work!

Ashley Judd and Corey Kimzey
Ashley Judd has been selected as Girls X-Country Athlete of the Month by Pine View High School. We all want to congratulate Ashley on her hard work which made this achievement possible. Ashley is a Senior who is in her 3rd year of running for PVXC. During this time, Ashley has battled various injuries and issues to develop herself into one of (if not THE) top runners in Region 9. Ashley ended last track season with some awesome performances in the 1600 and 3200 at Region and has carried it right into X-Country. After a full summer of miles, she won the first meet of the season at Canyon View. As she has continued to get better and gain confidence, Ashley (our Girls' Team Captain) has defeated the highest ranked runner in Region 9 and earned top 20 honors at the Las Vegas Invite! Good job Ashley, you're setting an awesome example for everyone!
Corey Kimzey has been selected as Boys X-Country Athlete of the Month by Pine View High School. A Sophmore, Corey has a passion for the sport of distance running that is infectious to the rest of the team. He is a student of the sport and has been running and studying running for much of his life, but it wasn't until during and just after his Freshman year of X-Country that Corey realized this was his true passion and set all other sports aside to accomplish his goals. Corey started the season by winning the Canyon View Tri and has never looked back. He also has a top 30 finish at BYU, a top 15 finish at Murray, and a top 10 finish at Provo to help establish himself as one of the top Sopmores in all the state of Utah. Congratulations on your achievements Corey, we look forward to many more spectacular performances from you on the course and on the track!

2008 Mid-Season Report
What a great start to the season! We have already had a number of memorable team and individual achievements. Girls - no group has shown more improvement throughout the first month of the season than the Varsity/JV Girls. Led by Senior harrier Ashley Judd; who won the Canyon View Tri, and placed high at Hurricane, SUU, Cedar, BYU (where she was the top Region 9 runner), and a top 20 placement at Vegas; the girls have really taken off in the last couple weeks. As the season has progressed, the girls have not only cut into Dixie's 2nd place ranking among Region 9 4A, they have now surpassed them thanks to the excellent running of 2nd and 3rd runners Rachel Heinrich and Cassidy Ferris. The girls have also gotten strong runs out of Senior Kareena Hudson and first year runner Micci Hafen (all 5 have earned Runner of the Week honors - congrats ladies). The girls look to continue to improve and challenge Snow Canyon for the top spot in Region and qualify for State.
The Pine View High School boys' cross country team has also done really great things this season. All three top Panther harriers have led the team at least once this season - Austin Smith (Jr.), Trevor Thompson (So.), and Corey Kimzey (So.) - and have place extremely well at even the largest of the state invitationals. Trevor Thompson (7th) led the Panthers to a 5th place at BYU where Austin Smith also place in the top 25. The Panthers also took 5th at Murray (Thompson 8th, Corey Kimzey 12th, Smith 26th). The day following Murray, PV took 2nd just two points behind American Fork at the Provo Bulldog Invite where Trevor took home a 1st overall, Austin placed 7th and Corey 9th. This same weekend, the JV boys went to the Las Vegas Invite with the girls and fielded a great effort out of our 2nd 7 taking 13th out of 24 Varsity teams in one of the largest invites in Nevada drawing schools from all over Nevada and Southern California. Pacing the Panthers was Devin Gillespie who also ran very well earlier in the year taking 2nd at the SUU Invite JV race and winning the Fresh/Soph race at BYU - closely followed by Sophmores Dyllen Cafferty and Ryan Nielsen - leading PV to a convincing victory.
We are also proud of all the newest members of our team. Since school started, we have had a large group of runners come join us, many who have never run before. Through hard work and dedication, many of these student-athletes are already showing great signs of improvement and really helping us look forward to the future.

We Made a Dye Stat TOP 20!
To my knowledge this is the first time ever a PVHS X-Country team has made a Dye Stat Top 20! What is Dye Stat? Well, it is a webpage dedicated to cross country and track and field. The site is a great resource for race results and rankings that are based upon actual results compiled by knowledgeable staff from around the country. Dye Stat is listed as one of our favorite links off to the right. In the past, Utah schools have done very well in cross country and have often been ranked nationally, but I don't think Pine View has ever cracked one of their top 20 lists. So write it down in your journals, as of Sept. 11 (the second ranking period of the season) PVXC Varisty Boys hit the 2nd ten (which are listed alphabetically, not in rankings) of the Dye Stat Southwest Region rankings! Great job guys; you have worked very hard for this - now let's keep moving it up!

PVXC Enters the 21st Century!
I was out searching the web for race results from up north and came across Davis HS's X-Country blog and thought, "Why don't we have one of those?" So here it is. I guess what I am hoping for is a way to increase communication with parents even more and publicize our team and it's achievements as well. Hopefully I can run this blog in conjunction with our team newsletter PVXC 4 EVER that comes out around 3 times a season as well as the fastrunningblog.com where our workouts are posted (pvhs.fastrunningblog.com) and many members of our team - past and present - have blogs, too. Also this will give us a place to post all those cools pics parents are out there taking.
But for now, I am just getting started... so give me some time!
